TRAVERSE CITY - Dorothy Yvonne Nolan Atkinson Pelkey passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at her home in Traverse City. She was comfortable and surrounded by family and friends when she left us.
      Dorothy was born July 9, 1933, in Detroit, the eldest daughter of Thomas R. and Rozelle (Schumbacker) Nolan.
      She grew up in the Detroit area, where she raised her family. In 1992, she moved to Traverse City to open the Hudson's store, which was an anchor for the Grand Traverse Mall.
      Dorothy lost her first husband, James Atkinson, in 1996 to cancer and was lucky to find love again with Richard "Dick" Pelkey. They were married Oct. 10, 1998, and had four of their happiest years together.
      Dorothy was still supporting Hudson's part time through those last four years, after a 25-year career with the firm. She loved the people she worked with and always had great stories about them. Dorothy also loved cards and played often with her many friends at the Senior Center in Traverse City. She also enjoyed her periodic trips to the casino, where she had a lucky touch. Dorothy formed a new family with her four children and Dick's four children, all of whom will greatly miss their mom.
      She is survived by her loving husband, Dick; her four sons, Bill (Sheryl) Atkinson of Manistee, Paul Atkinson of Clarkston, Mark Atkinson of Westland and Steven Atkinson of Cheboygan; her new children, Lois Boyd of Waterford, Guy Pelkey and Ann Reinke of Beulah, Scott (Peggy) Pelkey of Saginaw and Kyle (Mark) Schlereth of Traverse City; mother-in-law, LaVadis Miller of Traverse City; sister, Sharon Beaubien of Tampa, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Louis W. Grettenberger officiating.
      Dorothy will be placed to rest at Barnum Memorial Cemetery in Mayfield.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Munson Hospice.
      Following the services, a reception celebrating Dorothy's life will be held at the Waterfront Conference Center in Traverse City. Friends can gather at noon and the family will arrive at approximately 1 p.m.
     
      NEIL J. DELEEUW SR., 46, of Manistee died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Tendercare of Manistee.
      Cremation will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee.
      The Oak Grove Cremation Center is in charge of funeral arrangements.
     
      ARTHUR J. DILLINGHAM, 80, of Traverse City died Thursday morning, Nov. 14, 2002, at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      A full obituary will appear in a future edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle.
      Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
     
      MARTIN C. FREDERICKSEN JR., 78, of Manistee died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery following the Mass.
     
      KALKASKA - Michael E. Michalak, 50, of Kalkaska, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002.
      He was born on March 5, 1952, in Hamtramck, the son of Norbert and Jane (Karaniewski) Michalak. Michael graduated from the University of Detroit High School in 1969, Wayne State University in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, and Detroit College of Law in 1979, with a doctorate degree in law.
      Michael had been practicing law since 1979, and practicing in the Kalkaska area for the past 16 years. He was the chief assistant prosecuting attorney for Alpena County and Presque Isle County from 1981 to 1985. Michael served as the prosecuting attorney for Kalkaska County from 1985 to 1992, and was then in general private practice.
      Michael was a member of the Michigan Bar Association, St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church and a past member of the Rotary Club in Kalkaska. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, sports, television, root beer and slurpies. He was also an avid golfer.
      Michael is survived by his family, including the dear mother of Michael's children, Lisa of Kalkaska; his children, Justin S. Michalak, Adrienne L. Michalak and Amanda J. Michalak, all of Kalkaska; his parents, Norbert and Jane Michalak of Warren; his sisters, Sharon (Ray) Ellerbe of New Baltimore and Linda Lewandowski of Centerline; and his brother, Bruce Michalak of Warren.
      There will be visitation with the family today from 5 to 9 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home with the Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.
      Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church with visitation one hour before the service. The Rev. Dale Magoon will serve as celebrant.
      Memorials may be made in behalf of Michael Michalak to the children of Michael Michalak.
      Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ethelyn A. Weeks, 94, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Arbor House of Traverse City.
      She was born Nov. 20, 1907, in Wexford County, the daughter of Marvin and Edith (Worth) Colvin.
      Ethelyn lived in Wexford County until 1926, when she moved to Chicago to start employment with the Compton's Encyclopedia Company.
      While working in Chicago she met Leo Weeks and they were married in 1935. She retired from Compton's as director of procurement after 30 years of employment. Ethelyn moved back to Traverse City in 1977, after the death of her husband, Leo. She loved being involved in her husband's art work and collecting and documenting all types of facts.
      She and Leo enjoyed each others company, and traveled extensively throughout the United States. Ethelyn's feisty nature will be missed by all at the Arbor House.
      She is survived by her great-nephew, Jan (Brenda) Peterson and family.
      Ethelyn was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Marge Dixon and Floris Nicholls.
      Funeral services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m., where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. John Ellinger of Central United Methodist Church will be officiating.
      Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse Commission on Aging or to the charity of one's choice.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - James Bazzell Grayum, 86, of Traverse City, died Wednesday morning at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      James was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Wingo, Ky., the son of Myrtie (Mitchell) and James Bazzell Grayum.
      A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Fifth Armored Division in Germany. Following his service to our country, James was employed by Chrysler Corporation in their main office, working as an elevator operator.
      James retired in 1972, and moved to Traverse City where he was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Enjoying playing and watching baseball, James was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and was a great story teller. Even though James never married, he was a great family man who dearly loved his extended family.
      Survivors include his sister, Nancy Owen of Traverse City; his brother, Charles Edward (Pearl) Grayum of St. Paul, Minn.; his nephews and nieces, Dr. Stanley (Connie) Blount of Albany, N.Y., Dr. Dale (Joan) Blount of Omena, Shirley Blount of San Diego, Calif., Dr. Harry (Stephanie) Blount of Suttons Bay, Barbara (Gary) Woods of Westland, Susan (Rick) Deller of California, Alan (Jolene) Grayum of St. Paul, Minn., Gloria Grayum of St. Paul, Minn., Gary (Marion) Owen of Dimondale, Gregory Owen of Mayfield, Ky., Rhonda Ash of Paducah, Ky.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
      James was preceded in death by his parents, and by his siblings, William P. Freeman, Thelma Freeman Blount, Mary Ogilvie, Linnie Armstrong and David Grayum.
      Memorial services will be held Monday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, with Pastor William Geisel officiating. No visitation hours are planned.
      Burial will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Detroit.
