November 16, 2002ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Delbert J. "Del" Whitney, 75, of Traverse City died at Grand Traverse Pavilions early Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, after battling Parkinson's disease for 25 years.He lived in Midland for 50 years, before moving to Traverse City in 1998. Del successfully operated Del Whitney Real Estate in Midland for many years. Prior to his career in real estate, he worked for seven years at both the Dow Chemical Company in plant protection and the Midland Fire Department. A Navy veteran of World War II, Del was a charter member of the Midland Optimist Club, a member of the American Legion and active in the Elks for numerous years. In addition, he was a lifetime member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association, the Michigan Trap Shooting Association, the Cedar Rod and Gun Club and numerous other sportsmen's clubs. Del was an excellent skeet and trap shooter, and an avid hunter. In Traverse City, Del was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was born July 17, 1927, in Bay City, the son of George M. and Bertha M. (Hillman) Whitney. On Dec. 25, 1948, in Beaver Township, he married Marjorie L. Stieve, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Susan (David) Cell of Traverse City, Sheril (Mark) Walkowiak of Traverse City, Caleen (Daniel) Chichester of Clare; brother, Robert (Joanne) Whitney of Auburn; 10 grandchildren, Eric, Michael and Patrick Cell, Justin, Kyle and Travis Walkowiak, and Becky, Katie, Cody and Stacy Chichester; three nieces, and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dr. David Gabel will be officiating. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - James Bazzell Grayum, 86, of Traverse City died Wednesday morning at Tendercare of Traverse City. James was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Wingo, Ky., the son of Myrtie (Mitchell) and James Bazzell Grayum. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Fifth Armored Division in Germany. Following his service to our country, James was employed by Chrysler Corporation in their main office, working as an elevator operator. James retired in 1972, and moved to Traverse City where he was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Enjoying playing and watching baseball, James was an avid fan of the Atlantic Braves and was a great story teller. Even though James never married, he was a great "family man" who dearly loved his extended family. Survivors include his sister, Nancy Owen of Traverse City; his brother, Charles Edward (Pearl) Grayum of St. Paul, Minn.; his nephews and nieces, Dr. Stanley (Connie) Blount of Albany, N.Y., Dr. Dale (Joan) Blount of Omena, Shirley Blount of San Diego, Calif., Dr. Harry (Stephanie) Blount of Suttons Bay, Barbara (Gary) Woods of Westland, Susan (Rick) Deller of California, Alan (Jolene) Grayum of St. Paul, Minn., Gloria Grayum of St. Paul, Minn., Gary (Marion) Owen of Diamondale, Gregory Owen of Mayfield, Ky., Rhonda Ash of Paducah, Ky.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents, and by his siblings, William P. Freeman, Thelma Freeman Blount, Mary Ogilvie, Linnie Armstrong and David Grayum. Memorial services will be held Monday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, with Pastor William Geisel officiating. No visitation hours are planned. Burial will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Detroit. Memorial contributions may be directed to Immanuel Baptist Church, 1027 McRae Hill Rd., Traverse City, MI 49684. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. WESTFIELD, Ind. - Mary G. (Angel) Gragg, 76, a Maple City resident until 1999, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Carmel Care Center in Carmel, Ind. She was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Mars Hill, N.C., and later married James B. Gragg, who preceded her in death. Mary is survived by her daughters, Gloria J. Flahault and Susan E. Confer, and her son, Samuel F. Chambers; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Phyllis Justice. Cremation has taken place, and no local services are planned at this time. Arrangements by Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center in Carmel, Ind. INDIANAPOLIS - Anne Ayres Taylor, 92, of Indianapolis and formerly a resident of Leelanau County, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002. Mrs. Taylor was a civic leader and director of the Goodwill Foundation of Central Indiana. She was also a member of the founders board of the Indianapolis Zoo, an honorary director of The Children's Museum, a charter member of Traders Point Hunt Club and a member of the Indianapolis Garden Club. Anne was also a homemaker. She received an honorary doctorate of humanities degree from Martin University. Anne was the granddaughter of the late Lyman S. Ayres, founder of the L.S. Ayres and Company, and the widow of Dr. Frederic W. Taylor. Survivors include her children, Alma Lathrop, Eleanor Miller and William Taylor II; and 10 grandchildren. Private family services were held and burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leelanau Historical Museum, the Leelanau Land Conservancy, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
