**FLAG** Everett Theodore Peterson
      Died November 18, 2002
BEAR LAKE - Everett Theodore Peterson, 88, of Bear Lake, died in his sleep Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at his home.
He was born June 8, 1914, in Manistee to Hans and Emma Peterson. As a young man, Everett worked sailing on the Great Lake freighters. After the United States of America entered into World War II, he was accepted into and graduated from the U.S. Maritime Service Academy in New London, Conn. Everett served his country as an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marines supplying invasion gasoline, ammunition and other war materials. On his first trip across the Pacific to Australia, his ship was torpedoed and sank in less than 10 minutes. In later trips, Everett would witness such moments as the invasions of Italy and France. Because of the extremely high casualty rate suffered by the merchant marines during World War II, Everett actively participated in a letter writing campaign for extending veterans benefits to those who had served in the merchant marines. Although he never used the benefits for himself, it was a happy day for him four decades later when the federal government finally extended veterans benefits to those who had served in the merchant marines during World War II.
Everett was best known as a popular tavern operator. Over the course of his life he owned the Kaleva Tavern, the Brook Night Club in Traverse City, the Mayfair Tavern in Elberta and the Bear Lake Bar. After selling the Bear Lake Bar, he opened a real estate office in Bear Lake and embarked upon a successful career selling real estate until he retired.
His hobbies were gardening and fishing. Both would prove to be expensive activities. His cherry farm never came close to reaching his expectations and his Bar Lake Fishing Tackle Company, of which he was co-founder, failed. But this was a glorious failure, as Everett's design for the beautiful Kingfish ice fishing decoy of the late 1930s has made it one of the most highly sought after collectibles of the commercially manufactured ice fishing decoys.
Survivors include his brothers, William Peterson of Manistee, and Walter (Muriel) Peterson of Kaleva; sons, Robert (Gretchen) Peterson of Bear Lake, and Theodore (Barbara) Peterson of Bellaire; his daughters, Marilyn "Candi" (John) Peterson Zimmerman of Westerville, Ohio, and Eileen (William) Peterson Tesch of Mesa, Ariz.; granddaughters, Tamara, Deborah and Rebecca Zimmerman and grandsons, Andrew and Edward Tesch; two great-grandsons, Tyler and Maxwell Tesch; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Everett was preceded in death by his first wife, Marguerite Olson, and his second wife, Virginia Skelly, to whom he was married for 40 years; his parents; and his brothers, Leonard, Harvey "Red," and Ralph.
Friends may call Friday, Nov. 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Edwards Oak Grove Funeral Home in Bear Lake.
Visitation will continue Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.
