November 21, 2002ObituariesGRAWN - Betty Jane Bygden, 74, of Grawn, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.Born Feb. 21, 1928, in Frederic, Wis., she was the daughter of Clifford W. and Mabel (Ferdig) Dinger. On Oct. 19, 1963, in Kingsley, she married Richard J. Bygden. Betty was a member of St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church and was associated with Running, Wise, Wilson and Ford for over 30 years, working as a legal secretary. She was a lifetime member of the Michigan Association of Legal Secretaries and a member of the Eagles Auxiliary Interlochen #3503. Betty enjoyed reading, card playing and traveling. She is survived by her husband, Richard of Grawn; daughters, Andrea Bailey of Grawn, Colleen Sheren of Kingsley and Brenda Bygden of Mayfield; stepdaughter, Julie Ann Altman of Florida; sister, Donna (Richard) Haimerl of Colorado; brother, Robert "Bob" (Joyce) Neumeyer of Barrington, Ill.; and five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents. Friends may call this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church on Friday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wladyslaw Marczynski serving as celebrant. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or to the charity of one's choice. KINGSLEY - William "Bill" Lewis, 68, of Kingsley, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at his home surrounded by his wife and daughters. Bill was born in Kingsley on Sept. 12, 1934, to John E. and Mable (Hamment) Lewis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. On Oct. 24, 1959, he married Margaret Ockert at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church. He was formerly employed with Murray's Boats and Motors, Bouma Tile and Acoustical, prior to becoming self-employed as a drywall finisher. Bill later worked for and retired from the Sara Lee Bakery in 1997. Bill was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and mushrooming. He also liked to dance and play cards. He was a member of the Kingsley-Paradise Eagles, the carpenters union and BC & T Local #81 of the Bakers Union. Bill is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margaret M. Lewis of Kingsley; his four daughters, Audry M. (Fred) Hoyt, Renee L. (Henry) Jones and Catherine A. (Don) Smith, all of Kingsley, and Linda S. (Kent) Stiner of Mayfield; his nine grandchildren, Keith, Ryan, Johnathan, Colleen, Michelle, Nolan, Kohle, Anna and Casey; and his brother, Ronald (Jean) Lewis of Traverse City and Tucson, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gerald, Jack and Wayne Lewis; and two grandsons in infancy. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, at the funeral home, with Pastor Char Minger officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with Military Honors conducted under the auspices of the VFW Cherryland Post 2780. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. TRAVERSE CITY - Arthur J. Dillingham, 80, of Traverse City, died Thursday morning at Tendercare of Traverse City. He was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Central Lake, the son of Ozro and Eloda (Carpenter) Dillingham. Arthur was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. On May 13, 1947, he married the former Ruth G. Liggett in Elk Rapids. A resident of the Traverse City area since 1967, Arthur had formerly lived in both Rockford and Grand Haven. In Traverse City, he and his wife Ruth owned Green Briar Farms Adult Foster Care Home from 1967 to 1975. They also owned Wells Fargo Campground in Tombstone, Ariz. Arthur and Ruth spent their winters in either Tucson, Ariz., or Las Vegas. Arthur was a member of the VFW Cherryland Post 2780 and the American Legion. He enjoyed playing poker with his friends at the VFW, solving crossword puzzles, traveling, spending summers at the cottage on Arbutus Lake and the special times he spent with his grandkids and great-grandkids. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruth; daughter, Patti Schaap (Jim Reynolds) of Traverse City, and sons, Jerry Dillingham and Philip (Vicki) Dillingham all of Clifton, Colo.; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; his brother, Allen J. (Barbara) Dillingham of Sparta; special friends, Larry and Susan Keller of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Ruthann Schweifler; and his sister, Margaret Nixon. Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where friends may begin calling at 11 a.m. The chaplain of VFW Cherryland Post 2780 will be officiating, and the services will be followed by Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be directed to the VFW Cherryland Post 2780, 3400 Veterans Dr., Traverse City, MI 49684, or to the World War II Memorial Campaign, P.O. Box 96766, Washington, D.C., 20090-6766. The family was served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. GERALD F. OLM, of Kalkaska, and formerly of Bellaire, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. |
