November 23, 2002ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Joseph Frank Cavitch, 78, a lifelong resident of Grand Traverse County, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.Joe and his family received the best Thanksgiving gift when he was welcomed into eternal life by his heavenly Father. His family is grateful that God has made him whole again and his strong, gentle presence sustains them. He would want to say, "When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so much work to do. You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears. Be thankful for our many beautiful years. And then when you must come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile and say, 'Welcome Home!' " Joe was born July 17, 1924, in Hannah, to Frank and Veronica (Steffes) Cavitch. He married Cleo (Lautner) Cavitch Dec. 30, 1944, and they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary last December. Joe owned his own business, Cavitch Oil Company, for 40 years and was admired by his customers for his friendliness and honesty. God and his family were the center of his life. He had a tender heart for his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. Joe is survived by his wife and best friend, Cleo; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Dave Fink, Patti and Jim Redell, Mary and Hugh McCormick; seven grandchildren, David and Shannon Watson, Stacey and Byrne Liddell, Sarah, Jared and Michael Redell, and Jennifer and Julie McCormick; six great-grandchildren, Rob, Gavin, Guy, Max, Chloe Watson and Bryce Liddell; a sister, Laura and Jerome Korb; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Monday, Nov. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Father James Hayden serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Masses in Joe's memory, or to the Alzheimer's Unit at Grand Traverse Pavilions. His Pavilion family took such loving care of him and surrounded him with their affectionate presence. ROBERT F. 'BOB' CALLESEN, 68, of Traverse City, and formerly of Flint, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. FRANZ FRANK PRELOP, 47, of Grayling, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at home. Private family services have been held. Arrangements by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, Grayling. CEDAR - Patrick Paul Schopieray, of Cedar, died peacefully and went to be with his Lord Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002. He was born Dec. 16, 1930, to Bernard and Dorothy (Gauthier) Schopieray. On Sept. 9, 1950, Pat married Maxine Stachnik. Pat had been employed by Parts Manufacturing, Leonard Kropp Well Drilling, Cone Drive Gear, Traverse City Ironworks and the R.M. Young Company, where he retired in 1997. He was also the Centerville Township constable for many years, and belonged to the Michigan Sheriffs' Association. Pat was a lifetime member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and was on the parish council at the time the rectory was built. He also was a long-time member of the Cedar Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed raising beef cattle on the family farm with his brother Barney and was known for his big vegetable garden which he called his "give away garden." Pat supplied the dinners at Holy Rosary with bushels of his bounty. Prior to his illness, he spent vacation time at the deer hunting cabin he owned with his brother, Barney and his two best friends, Bill Chamberlain and Fred Broghamer. His greatest joy came with Sunday dinner when he could spend time with his children and grandchildren. Pat is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maxine; children, David (Deborah) Schopieray of Cedar, Patti (Cameron) Keim of Cedar and Tammy (R. Paul) Haywood of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, Shannon (Christopher) Rice, Patrick (Nichole) Schopieray, Megan, Michael and Matthew Keim of Cedar, and Bobby and Rachel Haywood of Traverse City; his two brothers, Maurice (Gertrude Ann) Schopieray of Cadillac and Alfred Schopieray of Cedar; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Schopieray and Joyce Novak. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Dorothy Schopieray; his brothers, Ronald, Robert, Barney; and his cousin/brother, Joseph Paul Schopieray; and his sister, Kathleen. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 24, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. The Holy Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the church. Interment will follow the Mass at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, to carry out Pat's wish that a donation be made to the Father Fred Foundation in Traverse City to feed the poor and homeless. He was a loving and caring man and will be greatly missed by his family. Arrangements by the Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. ALDEN - James G. Roach, 84, of Alden, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at home. He was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Florence, Wis., the son of James F. and Celia (Murray) Roach. Jim served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of corporal. In Madison Heights Jim married Nina A. (Mead) Whyte on Jan. 4, 1969. Jim was a machinist and worked for many years for the Cross Company in Detroit. He retired in 1982, and moved to Alden from Royal Oak. He enjoyed fishing and was particularly fond of spending time with nature in the woods surrounding his home. He was a member of the St. Luke Catholic Church in Bellaire. Preceding Jim in death were his parents; his brothers, Patrick and John; and his sisters, Grace O'Connor, Frances Walters and Mercedes Larsen. Jim is survived by his wife of 33 years, Nina; his children, Peggy (Tony) Benson of Lafayette, Ind., Steven (Kelly) Miller of Greenfield, Wis., John Whyte of Alden and Wendy (Harry) McSparin of Clawson; his sister, Genevieve (Elmer) Gauger of Yuma, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where a Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at St. Luke Catholic Church with Father Dale Magoon serving as celebrant. Burial will follow the Mass in Helena Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Mass Intentions or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. GRAND MARAIS - Homer Rudy "Pat" Huey, 80, of Grand Marais and formerly of Traverse City, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at his home. He was born Aug. 24, 1922, in Traverse City, the son of Mary (Stamm) and George L. Huey. Pat served with the U.S. Army during World War II, obtaining the rank of sergeant, and served in Company D 5th Medical Battalion. On June 14, 1944, he married the former Frances L. Dunmore in Traverse City. He had been employed at the Traverse City Iron Works from 1952 until 1981 and from 1981 until his retirement in 1990 was employed by TC Rentals. In August of 1990, Pat retired and, with his wife, moved to their home in Grand Marais, where Pat operated a small engine repair business. There he kept the community "running" with his expertise in small engines and will be greatly missed by the Grand Marais community. He enjoyed fishing on Lake Superior and searching for agates along the shore. Pat was a lifetime member of Cherryland Post 2780 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a former member of the UAW. After moving north, he and his wife volunteered at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Over the years, Pat also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Pat is survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances; by his children, Gordon L. Huey of Traverse City, Barbara J. (Donald) Gurn of Thompsonville, Michael C. (Sharon) Huey of Traverse City and Harold R. Huey of Elk City, Okla.; his nine grandchildren, Laurie, Gordon, Libby, Michael, Daniel, Shannon, Jessica, Mischa and Shawn; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Schneider of Grawn; a sister-in-law, Gloria Voice of Kingsley and a brother-in-law, Alan Widrig of Traverse City. Also surviving are nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by his parents. The legacy that Pat has left to his children is to treat each day as a gift and that it's never too late to live your dream. Visitation will take place Sunday, Nov. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Huffman officiating. Military honors will be provided by members of the VFW Cherryland Post #2780. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Burt Township Ambulance Service, Grand Marais, MI 49839. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. PLAINWELL - Daniel L. (Free) Elliott, 27, of Plainwell, and formerly of Grand Rapids, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, from accidental injuries. Daniel was a graduate of Northview High School and was currently attending Michigan Career Technical Institute, where he had completed the Red Cross life guard training. Dan also held two state championships in Hare scrambles from 1986 and 1989. Dan is survived by his mother, Dee Free of Traverse City; his stepfather, Gary Free of Grand Rapids; two brothers, Tim Free of Traverse City and Christopher Free of Grand Rapids; grandparents, Luane and Wendell Free of Grand Rapids; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold and Delores Jaynes of Utica; and his aunt, Debra Davis of Grand Rapids. The family will receive relatives and friends at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave. NE at 3 Mile Rd., Sunday, Nov. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. J.B. Stutts of the Woodbrook Cathedral officiating. TRAVERSE CITY - Archie L. Eitzen, 80, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Tendercare of Traverse City. He was born May 12, 1922, in Chappell, Neb., to Carl and Luella (McArtor) Eitzen. Archie was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. A salesman for a lumber company prior to moving to Michigan with his wife, Theodora, Archie was a member of the VFW Cherryland Post #2780. He enjoyed deer hunting and playing golf. Archie is survived by his sister, Ardith Bugai of Cedar; five nieces, Bonnie Kroupa of Traverse City, Dorthea O'Shaughnessy of Tennessee, Shirley Goe of Virginia, Marlene (Ed) Hannenberg of Lake Leelanau and Anne Reynolds of Florida; along with many great-nieces, great-nephews and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Theodora in 2002. Graveside services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at 1 p.m. at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted under the auspices of the VFW Cherryland Post #2780. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. |
