Obituaries

CEDAR - Patrick Paul Schopieray, of Cedar, died peacefully and went to be with his Lord Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002.
      He was born Dec. 16, 1930, to Bernard and Dorothy (Gauthier) Schopieray. On Sept. 9, 1950, Pat married Maxine Stachnik.
      Pat had been employed by Parts Manufacturing, Leonard Kropp Well Drilling, Cone Drive Gear, Traverse City Ironworks, and the R.M. Young Company where he retired in 1997. He was also the Centerville Township constable for many years, and belonged to the Michigan Sheriffs' Association. Pat was a lifetime member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church where he served as an usher and was on the parish council at the time the rectory was built. He also was a long time member of the Cedar Rod and Gun Club.
      He enjoyed raising beef cattle on the family farm with his brother Barney and was known for his big vegetable garden which he called his "give away garden." Pat supplied the dinners at Holy Rosary with bushels of his bounty. Prior to his illness, he spent vacation time at the deer hunting cabin he owned with his brother, Barney and his two best friends, Bill Chamberlain and Fred Broghamer. His greatest joy came with Sunday dinner when he could spend time with his children and grandchildren.
      Pat is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maxine; children, David (Deborah) Schopieray of Cedar, Patti (Cameron) Keim of Cedar, and Tammy (R. Paul) Haywood of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, Shannon (Christopher) Rice, Patrick (Nichole) Schopieray, Megan, Michael and Matthew Keim of Cedar, and Bobby and Rachel Haywood of Traverse City; his two brothers, Maurice (Gertrude Ann) Schopieray of Cadillac, and Alfred Schopieray of Cedar; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Schopieray and Joyce Novak.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Dorothy Schopieray; his brothers, Ronald, Robert, Barney, and his cousin/brother, Joseph Paul Schopieray; and his sister, Kathleen.
      Visitation will be held today from 1 to 8 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.
      The Holy Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the church. Interment will follow the Mass at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
      The family requests, in lieu of flowers, to carry out Pat's wish that a donation be made to the Father Fred Foundation in Traverse City to feed the poor and homeless.
      He was a loving and caring man and will be greatly missed by his family.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Virgil G. Thayer, 85, of Traverse City, died early Saturday morning, Nov. 23, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      He was born Aug. 16, 1917, in Bellaire, to Shirl and Hazel (Geary) Thayer.
      Virgil loved the land and the people of this area and devoted his life to preserving the land's natural beauty. He was employed with the Soil Conservation Service for 25 years retiring in 1975, and then continued working as a soil erosion and sedimentation officer for another eight years, retiring in 1981. He had been a member of Asbury Methodist Church since 1950.
      Virgil is survived by his loving wife, Fern (Somerville) Thayer; his three daughters, Jacklyn (Chesley) Culp of Englewood, Colo., Shelley (David Schwartz) Thayer of San Clemente, Calif., and Janice Francisco of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren, Chesley Culp III of Engelwood, Colo., Benjamin (Michele) Culp of Silver Spring, Md., Todd (Marie) Francisco of Grand Blanc, and Michelle Francisco of Rockford; two great-grandchildren, Wilhelmina and Lilian Francisco of Grand Blanc; half brother, William (Ida) Thayer of Dexter, and half sister, Dolly Ann (William) Mills of Panama City, Fla.; and many cousins. He will be missed by those who love him.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Stephen LeRoy Thayer.
      A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeremy Williams officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of the service.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asbury Methodist Church, or to the Traverse City Senior Center.

      THOMPSONVILLE - Andrew D. Beckowitz, 60, of Thompsonville, and formerly of Taylor, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at his home.
      He was born March 23, 1942, in Detroit, to Anthony and Marie (Dunbar) Beckowitz. Andrew married Emma Clark on April 3, 1964 in Detroit. He was employed as a machinist for many years with General Motors, Cadillac Division, retiring in 1985. It was at this time that he and Emma moved to Thompsonville.
      Andrew is survived of his wife of 38 years, Emma; his son, Larry (Cindy) Beckowitz of Thompson; three grandchildren, Stephen, Andrew and Meredith; three brothers, Tony (Del) of Venice, Fla., Paul (Barb) of Romeo, and Donny of Thompsonville; and two sisters, Delores Franks of Taylor, and Vi Monroe of Canton.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Jimmy, Larry and Dick.
      Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      LAKE LEELANAU - Della Schaub Maleski, 95, loved the Lord and peacefully went to be with Him Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. For the past seven years she had made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Blaise Korson in Northport.
      Born in Lake Leelanau on June 18, 1907, she was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (DuPeron) Belanger. In April of 1925, Della married Lawrence Schaub Jr., who preceded her in death on July 17, 1959. She married John Maleski, in 1964, and he too preceded her in death on April 25, 1975. Della was a life long resident of Lake Leelanau and attended St. Mary's Church where she was a member of the alter society, and the St. Mary's Quilters. Due to increasing problems with her vision, she had to resign from the quilting club. She loved flowers, her gardens, and most all her family.
      Della is survived by six children, Avery (Jane Mary) Rexroat of Lake Leelanau, Milford James (Marie) Schaub of Suttons Bay, Marvin Lawrence (Edith) Schaub of Suttons Bay, Marcella Ann Schmer-Kedzie of Corona, Calif. Terrence J. Schaub of Traverse City, and Sarah Cecilia (Blaise) Korson of Gills Pier; 26 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by five brothers, Jerry, Walter, Reuben, Orson and Alfred Belanger; four sisters, Elizabeth LaCross, Jenny Dufek, Lucy Alpers, and Marie Schoonbeck; and her grandson, Terry Schaub.
      Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at noon, Tuesday, Nov. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Jerry Hunko serving as celebrant. Burial will follow the Mass in St. Mary's Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary's School or Church Building Fund, or to Mass Intentions.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Thomas M. "Marty" Ulseth, 87, of Traverse City, and formerly from Detroit, died suddenly on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002.
      Marty worked for many years as a tool and die designer for Chicago Rawhide and Sealastomer Detroit. His passions included woodworking and he designed and built numerous boats; golf, with a low handicap and a penchant for making his own clubs; photography, publishing a number of books with his wife Hazel, as well as hunting, fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed the time he shared with his many friends and canines - including his favorite dog, Tyra. He was a craftsman in the tradition of Norway's finest; his late father and mother, Thomas and Marit both emigrating from Norway.
      He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Hazel; his sons, Thomas J. (Holly) Ulseth and Mark (Bethany) Ulseth; his brothers, Ulmer and Edward; and his sister, Marget.
      Along with his parents, Marty was preceded in death by his siblings, Thoralf, Clara and Helen.
      Marty will be remembered as a beloved husband, father and friend.
      In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and private family services have been held.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - John "Jack" H. Leach, 70, of Traverse City, entered into eternal peace with his Lord on Thursday evening, Nov. 21, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      He was born Dec. 26, 1931, in Sault Ste. Marie. Jack served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. After his discharge from the Air Force, he was employed with the Corps of Engineers building the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie from 1956 to 1959. On Feb. 2, 1957, Jack joined hands in marriage with Edna M. Corpe in Sault Ste. Marie. He worked as a warehouse supervisor for the Traverse City Public School System from 1969 until his retirement in 1988. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all his loving family.
      Jack is survived by his wife of 45 years, Edna; twin daughters, Janet P. (Dan) Missad of Portage, and Janice P. (Randy) Martin of Traverse City, son, Randall K. (Sue) Leach of Traverse City; two grandchildren, Jamie (Arron) Bohrn and John William Leach; and two great-grandsons, Josh and Carter Bohrn.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy (Delaney) Leach; his sister, Eunice Kirby and his brother, William Leach.
      A private graveside memorial service is being planned for the spring of 2003, at the Oaklawn Chapel Gardens Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie.
      Ross Funeral Home of Pickford assisted his family with the arrangements.
     
      DRUMMOND ISLAND - Robert Watson Snell, 84, of Drummond Island, formerly of Beulah, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      He was born Sept. 24, 1918, in Montreal, Quebec, the son of William and Nora (Hadfield) Snell. On Feb. 1, 1942, in Port Huron, Robert married Margaret Jean McDonald.
      Robert was a lifelong sales and businessman working for Continental Baking Company in Detroit as plant manager until 1960 when he moved to Beulah and started Bob Snell's Hardware. He retired in 1971 and currently the store, now Nugent Ace Hardware in Beulah, is in its third generation of family ownership, owned by his granddaughters.
      After retirement Robert and his wife, Jean, moved to Drummond Island, where they have lived for 30 years. Robert attended the Drummond Island Lutheran Church; and when he lived in Beulah, he had been a member of the Beulah Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed boating, sailing, playing golf and woodworking. He was a devoted family man who was always willing to help others in their time of need.
      Robert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret; his son, Roderick (Lynn) Snell of Baton Rouge, La., and two daughters, Linda (Neil) Nugent of Beulah, and Donna (George) van derHoff of Interlochen; seven grandchildren, Andy Nugent, Betsy Evans, Rob Nugent, Julie Bretzke, Rod Snell, Kate Brown and Sarah van derHoff; 11 great-grandchildren; his brother, William (Judy) Snell of Clinton Township; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by: his parents; and two brothers, Malcolm Snell and Donald Snell.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, in Beulah, with the Rev. Thom Nelson officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, from 1 p.m. until time of services at the church. Interment will be in the Drummond Island Cemetery, Tuesday Nov. 26, at 1:15 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to a charity of one's choice.
      The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah, is in charge of arrangements.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Joseph Frank Cavitch, 78, a lifelong resident of Grand Traverse County, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Joe and his family received the best Thanksgiving gift when he was welcomed into eternal life by his heavenly Father. His family is grateful that God has made him whole again and his strong, gentle presence sustains them. He would want to say, "When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so much work to do. You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears. Be thankful for our many beautiful years. And then when you must come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile and say, 'Welcome Home!' "
      Joe was born July 17, 1924, in Hannah, to Frank and Veronica (Steffes) Cavitch. He married Cleo (Lautner) Cavitch Dec. 30, 1944, and they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary last December.
      Joe owned his own business, Cavitch Oil Company, for 40 years and was admired by his customers for his friendliness and honesty. God and his family were the center of his life. He had a tender heart for his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.
      Joe was three when his father, Frank Cavitch died of tuberculosis. His mother, Veronica Cavitch Rusch, stepfather, Joseph Rusch, and infant son, Robert Joseph also preceded him in death.
      He is survived by his wife and best friend, Cleo; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Dave Fink, Patti and Jim Redell, Mary and Hugh McCormick; seven grandchildren, David and Shannon Watson, Stacey and Byrne Liddell, Sarah, Jared and Michael Redell, Jennifer and Julie McCormick; six great-grandchildren, Rob, Gavin, Guy, Max, Chloe Watson, and Bryce Liddell; a sister, Laura and Jerome Korb; and many nieces and nephews.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
      A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. James Hayden serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Masses in Joe's memory, or to the Alzheimer's Unit at Grand Traverse Pavilions. His Pavilion family took such loving care of him and surrounded him with their affectionate presence.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Robert F. "Bob" Callesen, of Traverse City, and formerly of Flint, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born March 26, 1934, in Flint, he was the son of Ervan and Lillian (Keener) Callesen. Bob served his country honorably with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1970 in Flint, he married the former Carol Corrine Casteel.
      He retired in 1986 from General Motors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and enjoyed gardening, flowers, and vegetables.
      Bob was a loving father and husband, and will be fondly remembered for being an excellent cook and for his ability to make up his own recipes.
      He is survived by his wife, Carol; five children, Gary Callesen of Florida, Scott M. Kennedy of Traverse City, Joseph (Christina) Callesen of Tacoma, Wash., Stephanie (Sam) Ancira of Oklahoma, and John Callesen of Flint; sister, Donna (Richard) Strom of Cheboygan; brother, Richard (Sandra) Callesen of Davison; and four grandchildren.
      Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
      Friends may call on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Larry Ross will be officiating.
      Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice House.
     
      BENZONIA - Longtime Glen Arbor and Benzonia businessman Robert Randall Bourne, 87, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Benzie County.
      Bob came to Glen Lake at age seven, and then proceeded to attend camp and to graduate in the first high school class at the Leelanau Schools. A desire to pursue mining and metallurgical engineering took him to the New Mexico School of Mines in Socorro, N.M. There he began a love affair with the West and his wife to be, Elodia Diaz. His education led him to work for General Motors in Dayton, Ohio.
      Bob and Elodia returned to Glen Arbor in 1947 to open Bourne's Restaurant on Lake Michigan, at a time when few buildings were present on Sleeping Bear Bay due to the fierce winters. The family escaped those by spending the winters in Scottsdale, Ariz. After 24 years, the restaurant was closed and the first antique store opened. Following the death of Elodia, Bob moved to Benzonia and established the Spence House Antiques. There he pursued his passions, dealing in the Southwest Indian Arts, antiques, and a new interest in antique oriental rugs.
      Bob loved nature, lake and stream fishing in the surrounding area, listening to classical music, and enjoying the company of his Labrador retrievers. A zest for lifelong learning and his enthusiasm for his interests led to his being described as "never boring."
      Robert is survived by his three children and their spouses, whom he loved dearly, Robert Jr. and Susan Bourne of Traverse City, Ann and Whitney Bourne of Benzonia, and Warren and Rose Sumners of Tampa, Fla.; his two grandchildren, Carmen Bourne Peplinski and her spouse Darick of Traverse City, and Kimberly Bourne of Denver.
      The memorial service was held at the Benzonia Congregational Church, USCC, with the Rev. Telfer Mook officiating.
      The Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home of Bear Lake handled the funeral arrangements.
     
      Funeral services for HOMER 'PAT' HUEY will be held Monday, Nov. 25, at 1:30 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening.
     
      CLAUDE JAMES 'C.J.' ISHAM JR., 72, of Traverse City, and formerly of Poplar Bluff, Mo., died Saturday morning, Nov. 23, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. A graveside service will be held for Claude in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Bluffs, Mo. The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City is serving the family.
     
      KARL CLIFTON SHOUP III, 49, of Manistee, after one hell of a fight, died Friday evening, Nov. 22, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      A celebration of Karl's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Wellston Community Center in Wellston.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospitality House at Munson Medical Center.
