Obituaries

TRAVERSE CITY - Louis Frederick Tousain, 80, died Monday evening at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
      Mr. Tousain served his country honorably during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
      He retired in 1975 as a self-employed co-owner of Petoskey Electric Supply. Mr. Tousain was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge and the First Christian Church, both in Petoskey. He loved to fish, hunt, bowl, golf, go hunting with his metal detector and polish Petoskey stones. Louis also excelled as both a hitter and fielder in softball and was a great fixer of "things."
      Born in Climax, on Oct. 31, 1922, he was the son of Carl and Helen Tousain. On Jan. 20, 1946, Louis married Frances Campbell, who preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 1989.
      Mr. Tousain is survived by a son, Roney (Liz) Tousain; his brother, Dick (Jeanette) Tousain, and sister, Phylis Budzynski, all of Petoskey; one grandchild, Kari (Bryan) Kittleson of Canton; and one great-grandchild, Colyn Russel Kittleson.
      He was also preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Carl (Arlieen) Tousain Jr.
      Memorial services will be held at the First Christian Church on Monroe Street in Petoskey on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Rex Kibler will be officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 1040 Walnut Street, Traverse City, MI 49684. Envelopes will be provided at the service.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - George Field Hayes, 68, of Traverse City, passed away Tuesday afternoon at his home, his family at his side.
      George was born July 20, 1934, in Belhaven, N.C., the son of Eugene L. and Martha "Mattie" Louise (Field) Hayes. Moving to the Saginaw area, George graduated in June of 1952 from Saginaw Arthur Hill High School. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1955. George married Willa Elizabeth Hathaway on Aug. 18, 1956, at the Jefferson Avenue Methodist Church in Saginaw, with the Rev. Carl Adams officiating the service.
      In 1960, George graduated from Eastern Michigan University, majoring in history and education and earned his bachelor's degree. He then earned his master's degree in history, graduating in 1967, also from Eastern Michigan University.
      George began his teaching career at Riverside High School in Dearborn Heights and transferred to Traverse City Area Public Schools in 1968, where he taught American history at both the junior and senior high schools. George retired from TCAPS in 1993.
      An active member of Central United Methodist Church since 1968, George served on many of the church's boards. He also was a tutor and board member of the Grand Traverse Area Literacy Council for many years and served on the Glen Lake School Board from 1976 to 1981. George was a past member and former president of the Cedar-Maple City Lion's Club, and a member of the Big Brother and Big Sisters Organization.
      His greatest joys were his family, being with friends and former students, fishing, bow hunting, reading books and writing.
      He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Willa Elizabeth (Hathaway) Hayes; children, Anne Wallace (Michael) Riegler of Copemish, Robert Field (Victoria) Hayes of DeWitt and David Andrew (Jennifer) Hayes of Ypsilanti; his grandchildren, Ceaserina Elizabeth and David Andrew Hayes Jr. of Ypsilanti, William Hayes of Ann Arbor, Robert Field Hayes Jr. and Rachel Anne Hayes of DeWitt, Anthony Hayes, currently serving with the U.S. Army at Ft. Campbell, Ky.; his brothers, Ben (Shirley) Hayes of Sterling Heights and James (Judy) Hayes of Saginaw; and many nieces and nephews.
      George was preceded in death by his mother and father; a sister, Martha Louise Easton; a brother, Richard; and a son Christopher Paul Hayes.
      A service of thanksgiving for George's life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Ellinger officiating. Friends may call at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Inurnment will take place in the Columbarium of Central United Methodist Church.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Central United Methodist Church, the Grand Traverse Area Literacy Council, the American Cancer Society or the Cedar-Maple City Lions Club.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      CEDAR - Thomas H. Doherty, 82, most recently of Cedar, died at home Nov. 24, 2002, after a long illness.
      Born Dec. 14, 1920, in Norwood, Mass., he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as a photographer with the Sea Bees in the South Pacific until malaria sent him stateside in 1944. While in officers training at the University of Illinois at Champaign, he met Rosemary Jantzen of Bartelso, Ill. They married June 26, 1947.
      A 1948 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Tom pursued a career as an artist, selling his original woodcarvings at Marshall Field's in Chicago and from his home studio in South Bend, Ind. In 1951, he began a 31 year career at Uniroyal Corporation in Mishawaka, Ind. He retired in 1983 as Head of Coated Fabrics Styling for Uniroyal.
      He continued his love of photography throughout his life, and exhibited his photographs in the South Bend area a number of times over the years.
      In 1988, Tom moved to a home in Cedar designed by his son, architect Michael Doherty. Until his illness, he and Rosemary volunteered regularly at the food pantry of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City, where Tom also donated his time to craft artistic pieces for church use.
      Known as a raconteur of the first order, Tom continued sculpting, photographing and telling jokes until the final days of his life.
      He is survived by his wife, Rosemary, his four children and seven grandchildren.
      A wake and brief celebration of his life will be held Monday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the food pantry of Immaculate Conception Church or to Munson Hospice.
     
      CRYSTAL BERLIN, 45, of Kalkaska, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at her home.
      Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      MARGARET BURGHART, 84, of Alden, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      No services are scheduled at this time.
      Arrangements were handled by the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona.
     
      GERALD LEIGHTON JEWETT, 65, of Mesick, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, on the family homestead.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Eden Bible Church in Beulah. Cremation will take place at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee, with final interment in the Antioch Township Cemetery.
      The Oak Grove Cremation Center in Manistee is serving the family.
     
      RUSSELL E. RIDDLE, 75, of Lake Ann, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 27, 2002, at his home surrounded by family.
      No services are planned at this time.
