October 22, 2002ObituariesPHOTOFLAG Charles C. Duell Died October 21, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Charles C. Duell, 71, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at his home in Traverse City. Born in Benzie County on July 15, 1931, Charles was the son of Vern R. and Clara M. (McGivern) Duell. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Charles married Sigrid Renz in Bishop's Stortford, Herts, England, on Sept. 26, 1953. The couple moved to Traverse City in 1954. Charles was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. He joined the Traverse City Fire Department in 1958 and retired as chief in 1990. He was a member of the VFW Cherryland Post #2780, the Eagles Club and Alcoholics Anonymous. Charles enjoyed an interest in woodworking after retirement and over the years created many beautifully-crafted gifts for family and friends. Charles is survived by his wife, Sigrid; his three sons, Charles V. (Elizabeth Goodland) Duell of Holt, Chris Duell of Birmingham, and Steven (Brenda) Duell of Indianapolis; four grandchildren; and his sister, Vernice (Duell) Milarch of Copemish. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Duell and sisters, Dolly Harris and Dorothy C. Rak. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, 244 Washington St., Traverse City, with Pastor Tom Mansfield officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the services at the church. Charles will be attended by members of the Traverse City Fire Department as pall bearers. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, with military honors rendered graveside under the auspices of VFW Cherryland Post #2780. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church. Gretchen Elizabeth Robinson Mariage Died October 19, 2002 RAPID CITY - Gretchen Elizabeth Robinson Mariage, 91, of Rapid City, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, Long Term Care, in Kalkaska. She was born on May 23, 1911, in Bellaire, the daughter of William and Louise (Kettler) Robinson. Gretchen graduated from Bellaire High School in 1929. On Dec. 25, 1929, she married George Mariage in Rapid City and lived all her married years there. She and George operated a general store in Rapid City until they retired in 1968. The Mariage home was always bursting at the seams with "six kids of their own and half-dozen of someone else's." Children just naturally gravitated to her. She was a great mom, grandma and "nurse." Gretchen and George were very proud that all six of their children attended Northwestern Michigan College. Gretchen kept her bright smile and optimistic outlook even though she suffered a stroke in June of 1997. She enjoyed "family" and was an outstanding cook. Gretchen had a great sense of humor and a remarkable memory to the very end. Her greatest pleasure in life was her kids, grandchildren and friends. Mrs. Mariage leaves to mourn her passing, her children, Joseph (Norma) Mariage, Virginia (Neil) Lee, Gloria (Ron) Cox all of Rapid City, and Tracy (Sandra) Mariage of Acme; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one step-great-great-grandchild; her two brothers, William (Stick) Robinson of Clam River and Ford (Alberta) Robinson of Rapid City; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and cherished friends. Mrs. Mariage was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, George, in November 1972; her youngest son, George II, in 1978; her youngest daughter, Sally Anne KreperVedder, in 1989; her sisters, Elnora Eiserman and Leora Bailey; her half-sister, Betty Trevan, and half-brother, Howard Thomas. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Wolfe Funeral Home. A celebration of life honoring this great lady will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Timothy Hall of the Rapid City Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in Clearwater Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Rapid City Church of Christ. Arrangements made by the Wolfe Funeral Home. ORVAL "MIKE" DULL, 81, of Elk Rapids, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements have been handled by the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. EDWARD IRWIN, 74, of Traverse City, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Bortz Health Care. Friends may call at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Grawn Bible Methodist Church, 7640 U.S. 31 S., Grawn. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Green Lake Township. PETER VIOGLAVICH, 77, of Honor, formerly of Wyandotte, died Oct. 19, 2002. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Czopek Funeral Home, 2157 Oak St., Wyandotte. Mary Jane Wagner Died October 21, 2002 ANN ARBOR - Mary Jane Wagner, 79, of Ann Arbor, passed away Monday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born Oct. 6, 1923, in Detroit, the daughter of Guy Raymond and Mabel A. (Drew) McCauley. On March 29, 1943, she married Ralph McGregor Wagner, who preceded her in death July 16, 1993. She had been employed by Ford Motor Co. for 10 years, retiring in 1972. Before that, she had worked for the Willow Run Bomber Plant and King Engineering. Mary Jane was an avid gardener and enjoyed needlepoint and reading. She is survived by five children, Sandra Lee (Russ) Bender, Nancy Lou (Leif) Meland, Mary Margaret (Terry) Fink, Ralph George (Lynn) Wagner and Richard John (Debi) Wagner; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two brothers, Raymond McCauley and Edward Krause; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband of 50 years, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Nancy Jean Campbell, in 1964; and one granddaughter, Lauren DeWolfe. Cremation has taken place. Betty Lorraine Zeeryp Died October 19, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Betty Lorraine Zeeryp, 73, of Traverse City, formerly of Grand Rapids, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Born Dec. 17, 1928, in Grand Rapids, she was the daughter of Lorenzo and Bessie (Green) Mercer. On Aug. 21, 1948, in Grand Rapids, she married Harry Gene Zeeryp. Betty's hobbies included reading, gardening, knitting and sewing. She was a loving and affectionate wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother and will be dearly missed. Betty is survived by her husband of 54 devoted years, Harry Gene Zeeryp of Traverse City; eight children, Debra (Chuck) Johnson of Washington, D.C., Frances (Bob) Hashek of Milwaukee, Stephen (Becky) Zeeryp of Virginia Beach, Va., Thersa McDade of Yokon, Okla., Janet (Eric) Malone of La., Joel (Diana) Zeeryp of Traverse City, Mary (Gregg) Peel of Traverse City, and Natasha (Jay) Morse of Lake Ann; sisters, Beverly Livingston, Buryl Schoults and Helen Schoults; brother, Ralph Mercer; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Douglas and Harold. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Catholic Church on Thursday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Patrick Maher serving as celebrant. Entombment will take place at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. Cawthorne Died October 19, 2002 SAYRE, Pa. - Clifford H. Cawthorne, 95, longtime Manistee resident and civic leader, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 19, in Sayre. Mr. Cawthorne served as exalted ruler of the Manistee BPO Elks Lodge in 1947; president of the Manistee Sports Festival in 1950; president of the Manistee County Chamber of Commerce in 1954; and was chairman of the Manistee County Republican Party from 1966-68. He also served three terms as an elected county commissioner from 1971-76. His maternal grandparents, the Haneys and the Alkires, were among the original settlers of Pleasanton Township. He was born in Tacoma, Wash., on Feb. 6, 1907, when his family was temporarily located in the Pacific Northwest. Returning to Pleasanton Township as a young boy, he worked on the family farm and graduated as president of his class from Bear Lake High School in 1925. Prior to his death, he and his first cousin, Clayton Lamont of East Lansing, were the two oldest living graduates of Bear Lake High School. Mr. Cawthorne attended Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) and Central State Teacher College (now Central Michigan University), and taught school in Gaylord and Johannesburg. He returned to Manistee County in 1933 and worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for a number of local businesses. In 1948 he formed his own business, Cawthorne Bookkeeping Service, and maintained a River Street office for more than 20 years. He married Marie Schimke of Manistee on Dec. 29, 1934. Their two sons survive, Kenneth (Martha) of Canadian Lakes and Dennis (Cynthia) of East Lansing and Mackinac Island. Also surviving are six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. After his wife passed away in 1982, he married Mildred Oltz of Candor, N.Y., on March 19, 1983. She survives, as do three stepchildren, Otto (Gloria) Aagaard, Connie (Roger) Hile, and Shyrl (Lars) Edburgh, all of the Candor area. Friends of the family are invited to memorial services for Mr. Cawthorne, which will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the BPO Elks Lodge 250, 432 River St., Manistee. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Manistee Elks Memorial Fund. |
