FIFE LAKE - Jenny Sue Corey, 38, of Fife Lake, was taken unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002. She was born on Feb. 6, 1964, in Ingham County, the daughter of John and Marjorie (Hollenback) Euvrard.
      Jenny's greatest love was for her husband and children. Next to that would have to be her love for the North Country and everything connected with it, hunting for mushrooms, taking walks in the woods, fishing, canoeing, smoking meat in her smoker. Her door and heart were open to everyone at anytime. Jenny's love was endless and all who knew her were the better for it. She will be dearly missed by all.
      Jenny is survived by her husband, Mike Corey and her four children, daughters, Autumn Pulling 15, Cassie Pulling 13 and Samantha Corey 11 and her son, Jesse Corey 10; her mother and stepfather, Marge and Pete Baker of Tucson, Ariz.; her sisters Paulette (Doug) Huhn, Carol (Jim) Cambric and Sally Averette; her brothers Charles Euvrard, John Euvrard and Steven (Teresa) Euvrard; sisters-in-law, Linda Corey and Pat Corey; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
      Jenny was preceded in death by her father, John Euvrard and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bernie and June Corey.
      A memorial service celebrating her life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Fife Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard D. Seaver officiating.
      The family is requesting memorials be made to the Education Fund for the children of Jenny Corey.

      Memorial services for HILDEGARD ANDERSON, 87, who died Oct. 12, 2002, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Building.

      WALTER T. MERILLAT, 78, of Elk Rapids, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are pending with the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      LAKE LEELANAU - Mildred L. Herkner-Ballance, M.D., 87, of Lake Leelanau, died Thursday, Oct. 24, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
      She was born in Traverse City on June 21, 1915, the daughter of Oswald and Elsie (Rickerd) Herkner. On June 19, 1940, she married L. Charles Ballance in Traverse City.
      Mildred graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1940. She practiced pediatrics from 1944 to 1966 in Park Ridge, Ill., and Traverse City. Mildred practiced child psychiatry from 1968 to 2002, was clinical director of Arnell Engstrom School at the Traverse City State Hospital from 1970 to 1973, and was a member of the senior staff at Hawthorne Center at the Northville State Hospital from 1973 to 1980.
      Mildred was a founding member of the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA and served on the board of directors and as president from 1967 to 1968. She was also a charter member of the Zonta Club of Traverse City, and was named Zonta's Woman of the Year in 1996. She was a member of the Suttons Bay Congregational Church. She loved cooking, gardening, taking care of others and bragging about her children and grandchildren.
      She is survived by her husband of 62 years, L. Charles Ballance; her children, Lee (Mary) Ballance, M.D., of Berkeley, Calif., Stephen Ballance of Traverse City, Ann DeMarco of Minneapolis, Minn., and Robert (Kathy Blake, M.D.) Ballance of Albuquerque, N.M.; her sister, Mabel Russell of Traverse City; grandchildren, Matthew Crouch, Elizabeth Crouch, Zoe Ballance, Elizabeth Ballance and Benjamin Ballance; and five nieces and two nephews.
      She was preceded in death by a brother, Oswald Herkner Jr., and a sister, Gladys Meyers.
      A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA, Leelanau Share Care, or to the Suttons Bay Congregational Church.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Clara Barbara Kabot, 82, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at her home.
      She was born April 29, 1920, in Cedar, the daughter of Bonislaus "Barney" and Frances (Sharnowski) Rice. She married Theodore John Kabot on Oct. 26, 1944, at Holy Rosary Church in Isadore.
      Clara retired from Turner Manufacturing in 1982 and also cared for children and did housework. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and baking.
      She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a membership she held since 1945. She also enjoyed serving on the funeral luncheon committee at the church. Clara was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
      Surviving Clara is her husband of 58 years, Theodore John "Ted" Kabot; her children, Larry (Paulette Pleva) Kabot, Ronald (Sue Penfold) Kabot, and Rosalinda (Claude) Ockert, all of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, Ted (Chanda) Kabot, Jason (Amy) Kabot, Claude (Kimberly) Ockert, John (Melissa) Ockert, Ken (Kristy) Ockert, Bryan Kabot and Casondra (Chet) Smith; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank L. Rice and Raymond Rice, both of Cedar; two sisters, Susanna Kabat of Traverse City and Barbara (Rocky) Flores of Cedar; and many nieces and nephews.
      Clara was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, John; a sister, Rita Darga; and a granddaughter, Miranda Kabot.
      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. James Hayden serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Visitation will take place today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with the rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Mass Intentions, Immaculate Conception Parish or to Munson Hospice.
     
      CENTRAL LAKE - Mary E. Young, 63, of Central Lake, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at home.
      Mary was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Nov. 1, 1938, the daughter of John W. and Dorothy E. (Wurzelbacher) Pegg. On Jan. 11, 1958, in Cincinnati, she married Leon M. Young, who survives.
      She resided in Central Lake for the past 27 years, coming from Vandalia, Ohio, with her husband. They owned and operated Young's Party Store in Central Lake for 15 years.
      In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by three children, John (Elizabeth) Young of Central Lake, Matt (LaTosca) Young of Hammond, Wis., and Megan Young of Traverse City; two sisters, Patricia (Dan) Klotter of Dunnellon, Fla., and Jean (William) Turpin-Caraway of Chatsworth, Calif.; and her mother, Dorothy Pegg of Central Lake.
      The family will receive friends on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. for a memorial visitation at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
