October 27, 2002ObituariesEASTPORT - Kenneth Herbert Vasold, 78, of Eastport, and formerly of Freeland, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002. Born June 24, 1924, in Saginaw, Ken was the son of Herbert Bismarck and Catherine (Benham) Vasold. On March 15, 1975, Ken married Doris Rhoda Hoch, in Livonia.Ken was a self-employed electrical contractor. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol and enjoyed skiing, golf, boating and sailing, and wood working. He was a good man and was always there to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, friends and family. Ken is survived by his wife, Doris Vasold; his children, Linda (Jerry) Walker of Woodbury, Minn., Herbert (Sheila) Vasold of Saginaw, Rachel (Craig) Anderson of Beaverton, Sandy Foster of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Susie McGarry of Encinitas, Calif., and Linda Kowal of Canton; 12 grandchildren; his brother, Raymond (Helen) Vasold of Saginaw, and his sister, Margaret Leaman of Saginaw. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Pastor Randy Bremmer will be officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association/Stroke Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. SHELTER BAY - Jeanne M. Schneider, 51, of Shelter Bay, and formerly of Frankfort, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the home of her parents. Jeanne was born Jan. 9, 1951, in Lake Leelanau, the daughter of Michael and Lena (Plamondon) Schneider. Jeanne graduated from St. Thomas in Ann Arbor and attended several universities pursuing her lifetime career in orthotics. She was employed as an orthotist for the past 20 years, the past 12 years with the Wright-Fillipis Company in Marquette. Jeanne enjoyed the many facets that nature had to offer and appreciated the beautiful land and water that surrounded her. She enjoyed the time she spent with her family and friends. Jeanne is survived by her parents, Michael and Lena; her brothers, Michael (Ann) of Hawaii, Christopher (Valerie) of California and Matthew (Karen) of Lake Orion, and her sisters, Nancy (Fred) Gum of Elberta, and Melissa (Steve) Boutell of Dexter; her paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Schneider of Lake Leelanau; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony. Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, from the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, where friends may call at the time of the services. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider either Art Serve of Michigan or the Make-A-Wish Foundation. RAPID CITY - Walter T. Merillat, 78, of Rapid City, went to be with the Lord Oct. 24, 2002. Walt was the son of Floyd and Ada (Saunders) Merillat. He served with the rank of corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945. On March 18, 1961, in Ypsilanti, he married Alzora Kooistra. He was a member of the Bayview Wesleyan Church. Walt deeply loved God, his wife, his family and friends. He was a lifelong fruit farmer who enjoyed hunting, ice fishing and bird watching. He especially liked spending time with his five grandchildren, who brought him great joy. Walt is survived by his wife, Alzora; sons, Daniel (Pada) Merillat of Dayton, Ohio, and Joseph (Bonnie) Merillat of Rapid City, and his daughter, Ellen Merillat of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Kaelyn, Karin, Samuel, Kevin and Benjamin; brothers, Carl (Dorothy), Floyd Jr. (Marcia), and Stuart (Carol) all of Elk Rapids, and Estle of Plymouth; his sister, Vivian (Frank) Walewski of Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Ada Merillat; sisters, Grace (Clayton) Allen, Caroline (Bion) Gassman, Mytle (Carroll) Busey, Violet "Judy" Merillot; and brothers, Donald (Harriett) and Earl Merillat. Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at the Bayview Wesleyan Church in Traverse City, with visitation at the church one hour prior to the services. Clergy officiating will include Walt's son, the Rev. Daniel Merillat, along with the Rev. Jack Steenbergh and the Rev. David Standfest. Full military honors will be provided under the auspices of the VFW Cherryland Post #2780 at a 3 p.m. graveside service at the South Milton Township Cemetery on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Bayview Wesleyan Thailand Missions. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. EDNA 'MARIAN' DAVIS, 87, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Bortz Health Care. Visitation will be held Monday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grawn. THIRLBY, 84, of Traverse City, died Friday evening, Oct. 25, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. |
