TRAVERSE CITY - Lucille Kauer Thirlby died Friday, Oct. 25, from complications of Parkinson's Disease. She was 84 years old and a lifelong resident of Traverse City.
Lu was born June 16, 1918, in Traverse City, the daughter of Rose and V.J. Kauer. After graduating from Traverse City Senior High in 1936, she matriculated and received her undergraduate college degree from the University of Michigan. She received her master's degree in social work from Simmons College in Boston. Her time in Boston afforded her the opportunity to be near her future husband, Richard Thirlby, who was a student at Harvard Medical School. They were married in 1942 and remained married for 52 years until Dick's death in 1994.
Dick and Lu spent six years in Ann Arbor during Dick's surgical training and made many lifelong friends. They moved back to Traverse City in 1951 and spent the remaining 50 years of their lives raising a family and weaving themselves into the fabric of Traverse City.
Lu's legacy was her love of Traverse City and northern Michigan. She worked relentlessly to improve the region. She fostered the development of the Nursing School at Northwestern Michigan College. She was instrumental in establishing the Women's Guild and Auxiliary at Munson Medical Center. Many patients benefited from Lu's innumerable trips down the halls of Munson Hospital with the "book cart." She also supported the growth and development of the Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Dennos Museum at Northwestern Michigan College.
Lu enjoyed the recreational opportunities of northern Michigan. She spent many hours "gate-keeping" on the ski slopes of the region so that local skiers could compete in Grand Traverse Ski Club, Traverse City Senior High and CUSSA events. She was an avid snow skier, cross-country skier, tennis player and golfer. Although her skill level did not always match her enthusiasm for participation, her constant wit and self-depreciating humor made her a favored sports partner.
Perhaps the most cherished constant in her life was spending each summer at the family "Shack" on the Miracle Mile of East Grand Traverse Bay. She loved her daily breakfasts there with her beloved sister, Betty. Lucille always had a deep appreciation for the beauty of the beach, and loved to swim and host summer parties for friends and family. Lu was proud of her Bohemian heritage. Her friends growing up in the west side of Traverse City remained her friends until her death. Calling themselves the "Go-Go Grandmas," they met regularly to party and solve current social problems. Lu was appreciative of the "Go-Go's" continued inclusion of her in their festivities even after her Parkinson's Disease made it difficult for her to participate.
She is survived by her sister Betty Sanborn; her children Jan, Ted and Rick; and her grandchildren, Robin, Marjorie, Olivia and David.
A memorial reception for family and friends will be held at Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Northwestern Michigan College Dennos Museum Center or the Interlochen Center for the Arts Advancement Department.
