October 29, 2002ObituariesHUDSONVILLE - Kelsey Ann Assink, 9½, of Hudsonville, died Oct. 27, 2002.Our precious angel is dancing in heaven. She touched so many lives and hearts in her 9½ years on earth that God gave us. On Sunday God sent sunshine to bless us all and called His precious angel home to chase butterflies. Kelsey is survived by her parents, Greg and Deb Assink; her brother, Tyler; her sisters, Hope and Megan; her grandparents, Jerry and Karen Assink; her great-grandmother, Kaye Folkert; her aunts and uncles, Jim and Donna Swanson, Karen and Cliff Walkley, Joy and Randy Ensing, Michael and Leann Assink, Dan and Marnie Assink, and Marilyn Tebelak; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harry and Phyllis Swanson; her great-grandparents, Jim and Nell Assink, and Leonard and Anna Folkert. Friends may meet with the family at the VanderLaan Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at Georgetown Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Peter Hogeterp and Rev. Dale Vander Veen officiating. Interment will be in Georgetown Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Pompe Foundation. TRAVERSE CITY - Robert "Bob" Ostrander, 78, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Munson Medical Center, where he received good care. Born Feb. 15, 1924 in Cadillac, he was the son of Carl Jackson and Ila (Belle) Ostrander. In 1967, he married Nan Ostrander and they married again in 1992. Bob served his country honorably with the U.S. Army for over 13 years as a medic. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 35 years and maintained his sobriety despite personal health problems. He was dedicated to the AA program and was always grateful for the good life that sobriety provided. Bob was a substance abuse counselor for the Washtenaw Council on Alcoholism in Ann Arbor. In 1979, he worked for Community Family and Children Services as a substance abuse counselor. In 1982, he and his wife moved to Traverse City, where he was the director of the Good Samaritan Lodge, retiring in 1983. After retirement, Bob became the greeter at Meijer and enjoyed the work and his co-workers. He was loved and respected by so many people. Over the 20 years living in Traverse City, Bob and his wife became dedicated customers of the Traverse City Big Boy, where they both received much friendship, care, and concern from Mark and his employees. His sense of humor will be missed there. Survivors include his devoted wife, Nan; beloved son, Bob (Rhonda) Ostrander and their children, Adam, Rachel and Aaron; stepson, Michael (Paula) Geoghegan, whom he loved; daughter-in-law, Laura Ostrander and her children, Michael and Jeff; daughter-in-law, Paula Kinyon and her daughter, Saroya; three great-grandchildren, Mikenzie, Zachary, and Justin; and dear friend, Emma, who will miss his beautiful voice and his hand on her shoulder. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; son, Carl Jackson II; and sister, Velma Oboler. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Unity Church of Traverse City, 3600 5 Mile Road. The Rev. Judy Grimes will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Father Fred Foundation. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. The family is grateful for the care Bob received from Dr. Richard Entz over a long period of illness. ESCANABA - John Francis Koivisto, 50, of Escanaba, lost his battle with heart disease on Saturday, Oct. 26, in Ann Arbor with his family at his side. He was born June 21, 1952, in Traverse City, the son of Matt and Frances Koivisto. John graduated from Traverse City High School in 1970 and Michigan Technological University in 1974. He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughters Julie and Jenny; twin brother, Karl; and his father, Matt. He was a devoted son to Matt, a loving brother to Karl (Linda and Betsy), and loyal to his many friends. First and foremost, John loved his family. He was proud of his daughters' academic achievements and his greatest joy was attending their sporting events, band and chorus concerts, and providing them with opportunities to enjoy life. Memorial services for John will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, with visitation one hour prior to the services at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Escanaba. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate your consideration in registering as an organ donor. TRAVERSE CITY - Maxine M. Cochrane, 81, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Oct. 27, at her home after a sudden illness. She was born in White Cloud on July 19, 1921, to Clark and Kittie (Branch) Anible. She married G. Ray Cochrane in Muskegon on April 10, 1970. Maxine grew up in White Cloud and graduated from White Cloud High School in 1939. She worked at Continental in Muskegon during World War II. She also worked as a clerk at several stores in Muskegon. She was employed by Consumers Power Company in Muskegon and Traverse City from 1950 until her retirement in 1982. She spent her winters in Tucson, Ariz., and summers in Traverse City. Maxine enjoyed painting, golfing and bowling, and spent hours and drove many miles doing family history research. She served as a delegate to the Michigan Genealogical Council. Maxine is survived by her husband, G. Ray Cochrane; three step-children, David (Penny) Fisher of Twin Lake, Sally (Jack) White of Canton and Amy (Denny) Cox of Belleville; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Meyers of Muskegon and Dorothy Valeika of Mesa, Ariz. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Traverse City. Rev. Charlene Minger will officiate. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Manton. Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 402 W. 9th St., Traverse City. Arrangements have been handled by the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton. TRAVERSE CITY - Ruth E. (Geer) Eikey, 96, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. She was born June 16, 1906, in Nashville, Mich., the daughter of Elias and Ida (Harrison) Rogers and had lived in this area since 1945, having summered here since the 1930s. In November of 1925, she married George W. Geer, who preceded her in death. In January of 1954, she married Tony Eikey, who preceded her in death in July of 1973. Ruth was a secretary to the Traverse City city manager and the city treasurer, retiring in 1975 after 28 years with the city. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church; the American Rose Society; the Medical Care Facility Guild, where she served as treasurer for many years; and was a member of Circle 8 at First Congregational Church, where she was formerly a member. A lifetime member of the Traverse City Musicale, Ruth was fundamental in helping to found the Municipal Employees Credit Union, as well as several other credit unions in Northern Michigan. She was honored by the Credit Union League for this involvement. Ruth enjoyed her hobbies of crocheting and embroidery, but really enjoyed raising roses with her husband Tony, at one time having over 800 rose plants. She is survived by her children, Dorothy Gonzales of Diamond Bar, Calif., Patricia Fell of Ocala, Fla., Ronald (Marguerite) Geer of Traverse City and Terry (Charlynn) Geer of Barrington, N.H. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, including Steven (Judy) Geer, Kenneth (Carrie) Geer, Susan Geer Kinney and Richard (Tracey) Geer, all of Traverse City; 15 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sisters, Clement North, Maude Richmond and Celia Allen; a grandson, Ronald Scott Geer; a son-in-law, Robert Fell; and a grandson-in-law, Larry R. Kinney. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where the rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. The Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at St. Francis Catholic Church with Father Patrick Maher serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse Pavilions or to the St. Francis Building Fund. STELLA M. BALDWIN, 93, of Kingsley, died Monday morning, Oct. 28, 2002. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. The funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. A complete obituary will appear in Wednesday's edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, Kingsley. RUTH E. BARTENBAKER, 80, of Honor, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at The Maples of Frankfort. Arrangements are being handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah. LULABELL POTTER, 58, of Bellaire, formerly of Central Lake, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Central Lake Bible Baptist Church. Arrangements by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. MARY CHRISTINA ROSS, 80, of Wellston, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at her residence. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Terwilliger Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Fernwood Cemetery. |
