October 30, 2002Obituaries**FLAG**Gene Ochylski Died October 28, 2002 TORCH LAKE - Gene Ochylski, 78, of Torch Lake, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002. He was born in Detroit on Feb. 6, 1925, to Marshall and Helen (Malec) Ochylski. Gene served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Grace Jean (Pilarski) Ochylski; three sons, Marshall (Patricia), Gregory and Charles (Sheryl); four grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 1, at Clyne and Sobocinski Funeral Home, 22121 Kelly, south of Nine Mile Road. Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Freeman Elliot Rasho Died October 28, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Freeman Elliot Rasho, 83, a lifelong resident of East Bay Township, died peacefully at his home on the farm he loved. He was born May 19, 1919, in Traverse City, to Freeman and Rose (Bunnell) Rasho. Freeman married Laura Brown on Aug. 8, 1963. Freeman was employed as a nurse attendant at the Traverse City State Hospital where he retired. He loved farming, hunting and fishing, as well as visiting with the many people he cared about and who cared about him. He had a passion for baseball whether listening to games on the radio or watching them on television or at the ballpark. He is survived by his children and stepchildren, Dorothy Faulkner, Lewis (Holly Hawkins) Rasho, Luella Sweet, Raymond (Nancy) Landfair, Luene (Denny) Courtade; and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Freeman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laura Rasho on July 5, 1993; and two brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Glen Walters officiating. Interment will be in the Williamsburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mayfield Chapel Memorial Fund, currently being used to build a handicap accessible ramp. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. William I. Taylor Died October 28, 2002 WILLIAMSBURG - William I. Taylor, 76, of Williamsburg, formerly of Bloomfield Hills, died Monday at Munson Medical Center. Mr. Taylor was an advertising executive for Ross-Roy in Detroit, retiring after 25 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Joy of Williamsburg; three sons, Christopher (Marcia) Taylor, Jonathan (Janet) Taylor, Timothy (Heidi) Taylor; stepdaughter, Victoria (Gregory) Supina and stepson, Ernest (Iris) Rust; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Tracy. Funeral services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Friday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. where friends may call at the time of the service. The Rev. James Gardiner will be officiating. A service will be held in the chapel at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m., with burial to follow. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation. Betty J. Baleja Donivan Died October 26, 2002 OWOSSO - Betty J. Baleja Donivan, 82, a resident of Owosso for most of her life, passed away Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Bortz Health Care. She was born Oct. 20, 1920, to Mr. and Mrs. Jay Terbush. Betty graduated from high school with the class of 1938, and then attended the University of Michigan. She was an avid fan of the U of M football and basketball teams. Betty married Frank J. Baleja on Feb. 10, 1943, and he passed away Jan. 23, 1961. She married Phillip R. Donivan on March 20, 1976, and he also preceded her in death in April of 1989. Betty is survived by her sons, Mark J. Baleja of Traverse City, and John J. Baleja of Redlands, Calif.; her grandson, Jeffery Baleja of Redlands, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Gerrie Terbush, and Dorothy Baleja; and her nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother; and one aunt and one uncle. A memorial service will be held today, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Owosso, with Father William Boli officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Christ Episcopal Church or to the Owosso Library. MARY LOU BUMGARDNER, 68, of Suttons Bay, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements are pending at Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. JOHN 'JACK' W. DERENDINGER, 69, of Thompsonville, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the Cornerstone Assembly of God, 15505 Cinder Road, Beulah, with visitation at the church one hour prior to the services on Friday. Arrangements were handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah. DELPHINE VERONICA GUMIENY, 86, of Manistee, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Prayers from the Order of Christian Funerals will be prayed at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. HELEN ANN LUCK, 82, of Kalkaska, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the United Methodist Church in Kalkaska. Wolfe Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Stella Mae Baldwin Died October 28, 2002 KINGSLEY - Stella Mae Baldwin, 93, of Kingsley, passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at the home of her daughter. Stella was born Dec. 29, 1908, in Englewood Colo., to Ernest L. and Freda (Schibler) Voice. She married Glen Baldwin on June 3, 1928, in Kingsley. Stella and her husband ran the family dairy farm. She was a member of the Grange and the Good Neighbor Club, and enjoyed crocheting and embroidering. Stella is survived by her daughter, Elnora (Tim) Fleming of Kingsley; her three sisters-in-law, Gloria Voice of Kingsley, Marge Voice of Traverse City, and Geneva Rarh of Texas; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; dear friend, Ernie Mehs of Kingsley; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen in 1999; an infant daughter, Glenamae Baldwin, her son, Ron Ogan; and three sisters and seven brothers. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Char Minger officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kingsley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Munson Hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Richard J. 'Dick' Galla Died October 24, 2002 FORT MEYERS, Fla. - Richard J. "Dick" Galla, 71, of Fort Meyers, Fla., died at his home in San Carlos Park on Thursday morning, Oct. 24, 2002. He was born April 27, 1931, in Cedar, to Joseph and Emma (Kirt) Galla. Dick was a machinist at Cone Drive-Textron before owning Traverse Bay Marine and West Bay Distributors all in Traverse City. He moved to Florida in 1968, where he opened a series of Castaway Restaurants which he started on Marathon Key. Dick loved to fish, cook, tinker with small engines and garden. He was noted for growing some fine tomatoes. Richard and Barbara both retired from South Seas Plantation on Captiva Island, Fla. in 1994. Dick is survived by one sister, Margaret (Edward) Cooke of Birmingham, Mich.; his three daughters, Debra Brittingham and Judy Arnold of Traverse City, and Karen (Bob) Perino of Saline; two stepchildren, Diana (Mick) Chamberlin and Mike Pfost; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Galla of Traverse City; and his loving wife, Barbara "B.J." Galla in 1995. His daughters would like to thank all Dick's friends and neighbors for their companionship the last few years. He was a little man with a GREAT BIG HEART. It was Dick's wish to be cremated. A memorial service will be planned at a later date in Traverse City. |
