TORCH LAKE - Lawrence Edward O'Hagan, 62, passed away Tuesday Oct. 29, 2002, in Florida.
      Mr. O'Hagan was born on Nov. 14, 1939, in Detroit, and has had a wonderful 40 year marriage to Carol. Lawrence was a very proud father and grandfather who loved his family and friends.
      Survivors include his wife, Carol; his children, Laura (Jim) Fileccia, Mark (Nancy) O'Hagan and Christopher O'Hagan. He was a loving "Papa" to and is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda and Nicholas Fileccia. Also surviving are his brothers, Donald "Mickey" O'Hagan and Terrance O'Hagan, his sister, Marilyn Austerberry; and many nieces and nephews.
      Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association, Midwest Affiliate, "Memorials and Tributes Program" Department 77-3968, Chicago, IL 60678. Envelopes are available at the NIE Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road (U.S. 23 to Exit 37A), where the family will receive friends on Friday Nov. 1, from 2 to 9 p.m. and a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Divine Child Catholic Church, 1055 N. Silvery Lane in Dearborn, where family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass Father Timothy Birney will serve as celebrant. Interment will be private.
     
      BYRON - William H. Lichty, 81, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his home in Byron.
      He was born in Harbor Springs on Nov. 11, 1921. For more than 40 years, Bill dedicated his life to teaching future engineers at GMI. After retiring he continued teaching transmission design for General Motors. He enjoyed writing, gardening, traveling and entertaining his international students and his large family.
      Bill is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty. He was the devoted father of Jeffrey of Clarkston, Joel and his wife, Diana Twede of Lansing, Susan Love of Hartland, and Christopher of Hilo, Hawaii; and grandfather of Caroline Shrier, Ian and Fiona Love, Christina and Brian Lichty, and Timothy and Zachary Lichty.
      He was preceded in death by his sons, Michael William and Timothy Quetin.
      Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road in Flint.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at First Presbyterian Church, 746 South Saginaw Street in Flint, with the Rev. Peter T. Haas officiating. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the services.
      A private burial will take place at a later date.
      In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be made in Bill's memory to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
      Arrangements are being handled by Swartz Funeral Home, Inc. in Flint.
     
      THOMPSONVILLE - John "Jack" W. Derendinger, 69, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his Thompsonville residence.
      He was born July 27, 1933, in Dearborn, to John Walter and Della Belle (Nelson) Derendinger. On Feb. 10, 1996, in Canton, Jack married Barbara L. Short.
      Jack was a truck driver by trade and loved the outdoors including hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a devout Christian and very involved in helping others through the Food Pantry.
      Jack is survived by his wife, Barbara L. Derendinger of Thompsonville; his sons, Steven Derendinger of Kansas City, Kan., Garry Derendinger of Lawton, Okla., and Allen (Terri) Derendinger of Kansas City, Kan., and his daughter, Cathy Hardesty of Kansas City, Kan.; three grandchildren, Trey and Christa Hardesty, and Spencer Derendinger; his sister, Dorothy (Keith) Sieting of Luzerne; his aunts and uncle, Bess Neifert, Donna Nelson, and Delores and Walter Nelson; four stepchildren, and 15 stepgrandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the Cornerstone Assembly of God, 15505 Cinder Road, in Beulah, with Pastor Alan Leonhardt officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday. Burial will be in the Thompsonville Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Benevolent Fund of the Food Pantry.
      Arrangements were handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah.
     
      SUTTONS BAY - Mary Lou Bumgardner, 68, of Suttons Bay, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Mary Lou was born July 5, 1934, in Northport, the daughter of Clarence and Loretta (Reicha) Popp. During World War II, Mary Lou worked for the Selective Service Board. On Dec. 27, 1954, she married John Bumgardner in Gills Pier. She worked as an administrator for Farmers Home Administration and as a telephone operator.
      She enjoyed her work, took delight in arts and crafts, but most of all, Mary Lou loved her family. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
      Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 47 years, John Bumgardner; her sons, Richard Allen (Joan) Bumgardner of Suttons Bay, Jonathan (Brenda) Bumgardner of Black River, Thomas (Shannon) Bumgardner of Suttons Bay, and Donald Bumgardner of Mississippi; four brothers, Clarence (Pat) Popp of Traverse City, Raymond (Diana) Popp of Tennessee, John (Diane) Popp of Midland, and James (Fran) Popp of Traverse City; three sisters, Geraldine (Gerald) Miller of Ludington, Dorothy (David) Lamb of Harrisburg, Pa., and Christine Ferguson of Portage; 10 grandchildren, Bret, Nichole, Cory, Andrew, Pete, Ben, Erin, Eric, Ryan, and Sami Jo.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and a granddaughter, Samantha Lynn.
      The family would like to thank Dr. Philip Siemer and his staff.
      Friends may call at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay today from 2 to 9 p.m., where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary prayed at 8 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Wayne Dziekan serving as celebrant. Burial will be in the Leelanau Township Cemetery.
      In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider donating to a charity of their choice or to Mass Intentions.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Ernest "Ernie" Hautala, 82, of Traverse City, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Bortz Health Care.
      Ernie was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Little Falls, Minn., the son of John and Mattie (Higdon) Hautala. On Sept. 6, 1940, Ernie married Ruth M. Van Valkenburg in Mt. Morris.
      He was employed as a supervisor for General Motors, Buick Division. He loved automobiles, played the harmonica and truly enjoyed and loved his family and grandchildren. Ernie was a member of the Elk Rapids Baptist Church.
      Ernie is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Hautala of Traverse City; two daughters, Karen (Marv) Sieffert of Traverse City, and Lori (Peter) Barclays of Flint, four sons, Ernest (Claudia) of Silverton, Joel (Caryl) of Elk Rapids, Daniel (Cindy) of Grand Blanc, and Steven (Linda) of Flushing; 17 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack (Bonnie) Hautala and five sisters, Doris (Jim) Stevens, Betty (Jerry) Doyle, Lillian (Gus) Heyneman, Florence Walling and Marlene (Bob) Heit; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lorraine.
      Funeral services will be conducted at noon Friday, Nov. 1, at the Elk Rapids Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gary Gladfelter officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kingsley. The family will receive friends at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the services on Friday.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Elk Rapids Baptist Church.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      KALEVA -Agnes Bowling Hilliard Kitinoja, 94, of Kaleva, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      She was born Aug. 3, 1908, in Cadillac, the daughter of Frank and Edna (Christofferson) Bowling.
      Agnes was a member of the Bear Creek VFW Post #6333 Ladies Auxiliary in Kaleva; and Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva. She loved gardening and enjoyed traveling, being outdoors and sewing. She was previously employed at Glen of Michigan in Manistee, Detroit Diesel in Dearborn, American Metal in Detroit, Makkraft Creations in Kaleva, and Cohodas Orchard in Onekama, as well as being a seamstress and growing strawberries on her farm on Nine Mile Road.
      Agnes is survived by two daughters, Audrey (Warren) Mikula of Traverse City, and Virginia Beldo of Kaleva; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Leslie (Doris) Bowling of Manistee; one sister, Norma (Roy) Wheeler of Mesick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by: her first husband, Ward Hilliard; her second husband, Ernest Kitinoja; four brothers, Emery, Kenneth, Russell and Earl Bowling; one sister, Gladys Riehl; and one great-granddaughter, Becky Ficelli.
      Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva, with the Rev. Kenneth H. Lein officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Township Cemetery.

      MARGARET R. BROWN, 98, of Alden, died Monday night, Oct. 28, 2002, at the home of her daughter.
      Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 1, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the funeral home.
     
      MABEL M. FICK, 82, of Frankfort, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      The Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes is assisting the family.
     
      EDNA V. POTTS, 84, of Kingsley, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 30, 2002.
      Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Kingsley United Methodist Church.

      TORCH LAKE - Gene Ochylski, 78, of Torch Lake, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002.
      He was born in Detroit on Feb. 6, 1925, to Marshall and Helen (Malec) Ochylski.
      Gene served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
      He is survived by his wife, Grace Jean (Pilarski) Ochylski; three sons, Marshall (Patricia), Gregory and Charles (Sheryl); four grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Clyne and Sobocinski Funeral Home, 22121 Kelly, south of Nine Mile Road. Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
