September 8, 2002ObituariesDORIS JEAN GERLACH, 75, of South Boardman, and formerly of Leslie, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, in Traverse City.Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oliver Township Cemetery. TRAVERSE CITY - Raymond Aloysius Newman, 82, of Traverse City, passed away Friday afternoon Sept. 6, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Raymond was born March 31, 1920, in Manistee to Frank and Mary (Wicinski) Newman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. On June 17, 1950, Raymond married Madeleine Whitmore at Holy Cross Church in Lansing. Raymond was a Eucharistic minister at both daily and Sunday Mass at St. Francis Church. He was employed at Consumers Power Company as assistant personnel director and retired in 1980. He was captain of the golf team at Michigan State University in 1950. Raymond was the club champion seven times at Traverse City Golf and Country Club. Raymond is survived by his wife of 52 years, Madeleine; his three children, Mary Ann (Ronald) Robbins of Traverse City, Margaret (Edwin) McHenry of Okemos and Raymond (Jerri) Newman Jr. of Mountain Home, Idaho; his dearly loved granddaughters, Ann and Elizabeth McHenry, and his stepgrandson, Sean Robbins; brother, Frank Newman and sister, Rita (Harry) Niemerowicz, all of Manistee; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and his sisters, Evelyn and Irene. Visitation will be held Monday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father William Lipscomb serving as celebrant. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Francis Catholic Church or to the Carmelite Monastery. FRANKFORT - James J. Ewing, 84, of Frankfort, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, at The Maples. He was born in Traverse City on June 11, 1918, the son of Joseph H. and Anna M. (Cribbs) Ewing. On Sept. 14, 1939, he married the former Josie E. Steele in Kalamazoo. A production worker, James enjoyed fishing and gardening. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in both the European and Pacific campaigns. He is survived by his wife, Josie Ewing; daughters, Sandra (Gerald) Lentz of Kalamazoo, Sally (Eldon) Moss of Beulah and Suzanne (Eric) Vigland of Cornville, Ariz.; a son, Joseph (Connie) Ewing of Columbus, Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert and Victor; and a sister, Viela. Cremation has taken place. No services are scheduled at this time. The family was served by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah. |
