TRAVERSE CITY - Michaeline B. Pleva, 96, passed away at the Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City on Friday, Sept. 20, after a long and fruitful life, and only 10 days before her 97th birthday. She died peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Michaeline was born in Centerville Township on Sept. 30, 1905. She was the daughter of Andrew and Katherine (Rosinski) Brzezinski and was the oldest of their 10 children. On May 30, 1923, she married Joseph Pleva and bore six children.
Michaeline was a lifelong resident of Cedar and the oldest member of Holy Rosary Catholic parish. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School in Cedar through the eighth grade, when she returned home to help her family on the farm.
For 30 years, Michaeline was co-owner of Pleva's General Store, started by her husband, Joseph, in 1919. The store continued in the family with sons Andy, Bernie and Ray. Michaeline and Joseph, with the help of their family, were cherry growers for 40 years, with orchards in Centerville and Kasson Townships. She was also employed at J.C. Penney, Diana Shop and several different cherry plants in the Grand Traverse area.
Michaeline's greatest love was her family, whom she bragged about as often as people would listen. She was well known for her stern demeanor, (i.e. stubborn), and her ability to delegate (basically, she was bossy and we loved her for it!). She read the newspaper every day and would work well into the evening on the daily crossword puzzle. It was obviously good for the mind as Michaeline was quick to rattle off dates of birthdays and anniversaries of her extended family and friends and was a resource for local historians and area students. She was also an expert at crocheting and produced beautiful afghans for those she loved. And not to forget her "green thumb," she often boasted of her over 100 houseplants - all growing at the same time!
Michaeline's home was always filled with family and friends. There were always "a few extra" for dinner every night. When asked why she never locked her doors when she left home, she responded, "Someone might need a place to stay while we're away."
She expertly fed the birds her homemade suet and would, at times, have nearly a dozen birds visiting her feeders during the winter months. And she always had an extra dish on the back steps to feed the stray dogs and cats in the neighborhood.
Michaeline whipped up her famous paczki, sticky buns and cinnamon bread (with frosting!) as fast as family could eat them, especially at the Christmas family gathering we remember so fondly and fatly.
Michaeline never got her driver's license (although she was an excellent backseat driver!), yet was an avid volunteer and always managed to get where she needed to be. She served the American Cancer Society for 34 years; was a 4-H leader for 15 years, where she always said her sewing class had a "rippin' good time"; she was on the Rosary and Altar Societies; Catholic Daughters of America; Catholic Women's Club; Home and School Association; and wrote "Cedar News" (long hand) for the Leelanau Enterprise for 42 years.
Michaeline had an undying love for her Lord and prayed the rosary daily. Her favorite books were her prayer books, which she read religiously every day.
She is survived by her children, Bernard L. (Irene Kelenske) Pleva of Cedar, John F. (Donna Brow) Pleva of Hobart, Ind., Gertrude (Maurice) Schopieray of Cadillac, Raymond M. (Margaret Panek) Pleva of Cedar, J. Thomas (Cherie Sirko) Pleva of Monroe, Conn.; her daughter-in-law, Irene (Witkwoski) Pleva; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers, Steve (Esther) Brzezinski of Sarasota, Fla., Joseph Brzezinski of Cedar; and her sister-in-law, Melanie (John) Brzezinski of Auburn Hills.
Michaeline was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; son, Andrew J. Pleva; granddaughter, Carol Pleva; brothers, Andrew Brzezinski, John "Jack" Brzezinski and Wlazdio Brzezinski; sisters, Anna Novak, Alice Bruckner, Proxsedes "Sadie" Joynt and Catherine Betlejewski.
Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Monday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m.; and at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Cedar from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Wake service and rosary at 7:30 p.m.
A funeral Mass to celebrate Michaeline's life will be held at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Cedar with the Rev. Father Jerome Brzezinski, nephew of Michaeline, serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Isadore.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Holy Rosary Parish, or Grand Traverse Pavilions.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Grand Traverse Pavilions for their loving care of Michaeline, and to Dick Dell'Acqua and Ken Kleinrickert for their dedication in bringing communion to Michaeline every week.
