April 20, 2003ObituaritesBIG RAPIDS - Kenneth N. Long, 90, of Big Rapids, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac.He was born Oct. 19, 1912, in Cadillac, the son of Frank and Caroline Long, and moved to Kalkaska County as a child. In 1946, he moved to Big Rapids, and for 19 years he owned and operated a Total gas station in town until retiring in 1976. Ken was a longtime member of the Big Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, and was on the board of directors for three years. He also was a Master Mason in Big Rapids Lodge #171 F. & A.M. Ken enjoyed bowling and deer hunting, collected old gas engines and belonged to Buckley Old Engine Club. On Feb. 15, 1934, Ken married Clara Crane, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, June Heisler of Big Rapids; a son, Dale Long of Traverse City; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two half-sisters, Jeanne (Dale) Lantzer of Kalkaska and Donna (Bill) Buehl of Hastings; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Kate; his stepfather, Max; a daughter, Joyce; two brothers, Cecil and Leonard; and a sister, Dorothy. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, at Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with the Rev. Jon Fleming officiating Burial will be in Highland View Cemetery, Big Rapids. Memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan may be left at the funeral home, where his family will greet friends Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and prior to services on Tuesday. TRAVERSE CITY - Henriette "Yetty" Wood, 84, a homemaker of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center. Born June 6, 1918, in Utrecht, Holland, she was the daughter of Henry and Wilhemnia (Peerenboom) Sandtman. On Aug. 5, 1967, in Williamsburg, she married Wesley A. Wood, who survives. Yetty was a longtime member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church, and she worked closely with her husband in operating their cherry farm in Williamsburg. Memorial services will be held at Williamsburg United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 23, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Doug Pedersen will officiate. In remembrance, memorials may be directed to Williamsburg United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Linferd George Linabery Sr., 90, of Gladwin and Traverse City, died Saturday, April 19, at Tendercare of Traverse City. Born July 7, 1912, in Gladwin, he was the son of the late Irvin and Ida (Stephenson) Linabery. Linferd married the former Gladys Fries in 1934 in Gladwin. He was a member of Gladwin United Methodist Church, where he had served as past president of the Methodist Men. Early in his work career, he was chief operator at Dow Chemical Co.'s benzene plant. He then owned and operated his family farm in Grout Township for over 25 years, providing custom harvesting many of those years. At Robinson Industries, he helped develop the expandable bead process and maintained the equipment used throughout the plant. In 1957, he founded Linabery Products, a metal fabricating factory, where he manufactured products that he had invented for both sign maintenance and recreation equipment. He held seven patents on his products, which were sold throughout the midwest. He was awarded the Best Product of the Year in 1957 by Gladwin County Development Corp. He and his wife operated the factory until their retirement in 1971. Flying was Lin's passion. During his 25 years of flying he owned eight airplanes and was a commercial pilot. He was the state vice-president of the Michigan Flying Farmers for two years and was a member of the National Flying Farmers. For 10 of their retirement years, Lin and Gladys traveled throughout the United States, plus extensive trips to Alaska, Mexico and Newfoundland with Travco Motorcade Club. They spent their winters in Florida for 24 years, where Lin was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; son, Dr. Linferd and wife Kathy Linabery of Midland; daughter, Ann and husband Dennis Covell of Kingsley; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Linabery of Midland; sisters, Myrtie King of Beaverton, Bernice Dull of Midland, and Fern Pagano of Lansing. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Gladwin. Local arrangements by Covell-Smith Funeral Home, Kingsley. OLD MISSION - Allan Miller Unruh, 70, of Old Mission, formerly of Grand Rapids, died Friday, April 18, 2003. Born Feb. 2, 1933, in Kokomo, Ind., he was the son of Allan M. and Dana T. (Lawrence) Unruh. On May 26, 1956, he married Margaret Wurm. Allan graduated from Central High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Allan retired from United Airlines after 32 years of service. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mapleton. Allan enjoyed talking on his CB and was a member of the Fishnet CB Club. He also liked traveling, snowmobiling and bird watching. He was a previous member of Knights of Columbus. Allan is survived by his special friend, Mazie Irene Wheeler; four daughters, Ellen (Scott) Bergsma of Grand Rapids, Deanna (Alan) Couture of Gaylord, Donna Unruh of Traverse City and Monica Vaughn of Kentwood; a son, Frank Unruh of Cedar; his mother, Dana Ostlund of Old Mission; brother, Jerry L. Ostlund of St. Louis; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Allan M. Unruh; and stepfather, Frank Ostlund. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Mapleton Catholic Church, with the Rev. John McCracken, celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary of Hannah Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society or Munson Hospice. FIFE LAKE - Francis Strzynski, 81, of Fife Lake, formerly of Flint, died Friday at Munson Medical Center. He was born in Flint on Feb. 19, 1922. On Nov. 30, 1946, in Flint, he married Maxine Sires. Mr. Strzynski served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He had retired from Buick Motor Division. Surviving are his wife, Maxine; three daughters, Nancy (Lynn) Golden of Comstock Park; Kathy (Glenn) Freel of Flint, and Laurie (Kirk) LaCharite of Byron Center; eight grandchildren, Dylan, Jennifer, Stephanie, Matthew, Kimberly, Michael L., Madison and Michael D.; a great-granddaughter, Abigail; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, at All Saints Catholic Church, G-4063 W. Pierson Road, Flint. The Rev. Anthony Majchrowski will serve as celebrant. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m., and Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Rd., Flint. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass Burial will be in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery with military graveside service under the auspices of Chevrolet VFW Post #3087 honor guard. Memorial contributions may be directed to Fife Lake Area Ambulance Authority or Munson Healthcare. JEWEL ANN BAILOW, 62, of Thompsonville, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, at Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, where friends may call from noon until time of services. COLLEEN FEWINS, 89, of Frankfort, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at The Maples. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, at the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. The Rev. PELTON, 64, of Grayling, died Friday, April 18, 2003. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Township Cemetery. DR. JOSEPH C. STEFFEY, 80, of Traverse City, died Saturday morning, April 19, 2003, at his home. Visitation will be at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday, April 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at Central United Methodist Church.
