August 7, 2003ObituariesLAKE ANN - Alvin L. Macomber, 88, of Lake Ann, formerly of Ferndale, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Birchwood Nursing Center in Traverse City. He was born April 13, 1915, in Caro, the son of Frank and Louise (Fischer) Macomber.Alvin was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Alvin retired in 1974 from Ford Motor Co., Sterling Heights Plant, where he was a steam engineer in the powerhouse. Alvin and his wife, Florence, moved to Lake Ann in 1994, where they became members of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen. In his spare time, Alvin enjoyed camping and fishing. On Oct. 14, 1939, in Detroit, Alvin married Florence Miller, who survives. Also surviving are his son, C.A. "Mac" (Sharron) Macomber of Lake Ann; two granddaughters, Stephanie Macomber of Lake Ann and Shani (Scott Machin) Maltby of Traverse City; two brothers, Dexter (Grace) Macomber of Picayune, Miss. and Victor (Millie) Macomber of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Alvin was preceded in death by his sister, Genevieve Macomber; and a brother, Edwin Macomber. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 8, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen, with Pastor Timothy Mowry officiating. Interment will be in Greenbriar Cemetery, Lake Ann. Visitation will be held this evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Memorial contributions may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church, or to a charity of one's choice. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, Beulah, is in charge of arrangements. TRAVERSE CITY - Zoa E. Fisher, 93, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born March 8, 1910, in Spencer, she was the daughter of William and Oma (Spencer) Gregory. On Oct. 17, 1932, she married Milton Fisher, who preceded her in death in 1975. Zoa had been employed as a cook in the public school system. She attended the Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara K. Miller of Traverse City; her son, Larry Fisher of Wellston; brother, Robert (Maxine) Gregory of Cedar Springs; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Along with her husband, Zoa was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kathy Jo Fisher. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Friday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at The Presbyterian Church, 701 Westminster Road, Traverse City, on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Becky Chamberlain officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Grand Rapids. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Presbyterian Church, or to a charity of one's choice. ELBERTA - Lila M. Bishop, 96, of Elberta, died Tuesday morning at The Maples. She was born July 7, 1907, in Empire, the daughter of Frank and Sophia (Albright) Denny. Lila was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was a former member of the Periwinkle Garden Club and responsible for planting the flowers in the flower garden in Elberta. Lila married Eugene Bishop in Frankfort on Oct. 24, 1927. That same year they opened Bishop's Grocery in Elberta, which they owned and operated together for 42 years, retiring in 1970. Lila is survived by two sons, Louis (Mary Kathryn) Bishop and Michael (Betty) Bishop, both of Frankfort; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, June (Paul) Kraus of Pittsburgh, Pa. Preceding Lila in death were her parents; her husband, Eugene, on May 9, 1996; a son, Kenneth in 1987; a granddaughter, Karen Quine; a sister, Shirley Bergsten; and three brothers, Clifford, Minor and Otto Denny. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, from St. Ann Catholic Church, with Father Ray Cotter as celebrant. Friends may call on Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, where a rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the Mass. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Ann Catholic Church. PESHAWBESTOWN - Gordon A. Chippewa Sr., 64, of Peshawbestown, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Gordon was born July 30, 1939, the son of Daniel and Eliza (Raphael) Chippewa, in Peshawbestown, where he also homesteaded. Gordon was a painter of water towers, steeples, and he changed lights on television and radio towers. Gordon was also known statewide for his Native American Indian food and cooking for many organizations. He loved traveling to various casinos and playing bingo. In the early 1990s, Gordon organized and started the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians Fire Department, as well as being a volunteer fireman himself. He was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians and the Kateri Tekakwitha Church. Gordon will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Gordon is survived by his wife, Judy Schreier of Edgewater, Fla.; two sons, Gordon Chippewa Jr. of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and Gerald W. Schwanke of Lansing; two daughters, Christine Elizabeth Chippewa of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and Helen Chippewa of Peshawbestown; two granddaughters, Tayler Jane Rizza of Edgewater, Fla. and Cecelia Schwanke of Lansing; a grandson, Gerald Schwanke of Lansing; a stepdaughter, Shawna K. Chippewa Jones of Lansing; a sister, Evelyn Felice of Detroit; three brothers, Venward, Russell and Albert Chippewa, all of Peshawbestown; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Gordon was preceded in death by four sisters, Violet, Mabel, Louise and Irene; and four brothers, Ernest, Wayne Sr., Danny and Phillip. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 8, from the Strong Heart Center, Peshawbestown. The Rev. Marshall Collins will officiate. Visitation will be at the Strong Heart Center this evening from 7 p.m. until time of services on Friday morning. Memorials may be directed to the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians Fire Department. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - Lynn "Pete" Edward Hathaway, 60, of Traverse City, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born Sept. 27, 1942, in Battle Creek, the son of Ward and Irma (Jones) Hathaway. Pete was employed at Tower Automotive in Traverse City, and he enjoyed spending time on the computer, talking with his friends in the CB Club, and restoring and working on automobiles. He was a jack-of-all-trades who truly enjoyed helping others. On Aug. 31, 1963, in Beulah, Pete married Laura Mae Smith, who survives. He is also survived by three children, Greggory Lynn (Maria) Hathaway of Thompsonville, Christina Bernhardt of Traverse City and Matthew Lynn Hathaway of Traverse City; nine grandchildren; and his father, Ward (Sarah) Hathaway of Tennessee. Pete was preceded in death by his mother, Irma Parker; and his daughter, Nina Hathaway during infancy. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with Pastor James Hemgesberg officiating. Interment will be in Platte Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 11 a.m. until time of services at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home. MESICK - Gerald "Jerry" Alfred Overmyer, 63, of Mesick, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born June 9, 1940, in Flint, the son of Bruce and Lillian (Metevia) Overmyer. Jerry retired as a lead-lineman in 1999 from Traverse City Light and Power, where he had been employed for almost 20 years. Jerry was a member of Sons of AMVETS Post 120 in Mesick, where he had been Commander of the Sons for 16 years; and he was also a member of Sons of the American Legion Squad 475. Jerry had played on the "AMVETS 1" team in the Wexford County Pool League for many years with his sons. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and bird-watching. Jerry is survived by his wife, Joyce F. Overmyer; seven children, Deb (Andre) Fortin of Traverse City, Peggy (Gary) Duell of Kingsley, Gerald "Jerry" (Rose) Overmyer Jr. of Interlochen, Kevin (Barbara) Braley of Mesick, Sandy (Kevin) Spierling of Mesick, Matt (Dawn) Braley of Mesick, and Jeremy (Mandy) Overmyer of Detroit; nine grandchildren; his mother, Lillian "Marie" Overmyer of Montrose; a brother, Bruce (Hikmet) Overmyer Jr. of Kinross; and a sister, Kay Wagner of Montrose. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Bruce Overmyer; a brother, Lenny Overmyer; and a sister, Gale Melton. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8, in Mesick-Sherman Cemetery, Mesick, with the Rev. Floyd Soper officiating. Visitation will be held this evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. TRAVERSE CITY - Dennis "Denny" Robinson, 63, a 32-year resident of Long Lake Township, died at home Tuesday morning, Aug. 5, 2003, surrounded by his family, after a four-year battle with cancer. Born July 24, 1940, in Detroit, he was the son of Gordon and Eva (Frank) Robinson. On June 9, 1962, in Taylor, he married the former Karen Ruhlig, who survives. Dennis worked at General Motors in Warren, Cap Computer Center and Cherry Growers, both in Traverse City, working in computer systems. Most recently, Dennis was a bus driver for Traverse City Area Public Schools, a position he thoroughly enjoyed. His interests included bowling, fishing, camping, gardening, woodworking and most of all, spending time with his children and grandchildren. In addition to Karen, his wife of 41 years, Dennis is also survived by his three children, Kim (Randy) Gildea of Lowell, Darrel (Ronda) Robinson of Traverse City and David (Lisa) Robinson of Kingsley; seven grandchildren, Haley, Kirstin and Sawyer Robinson, Kayla and Austin Gildea, and Haven and Dawson Robinson; his mother, Eva Robinson of Allen Park; three brothers, Thomas (Nancy) of Wildwood, Fla., Gary (Jerrie Lynn) of Allen Park and Neil (Colleen) of Livonia; a sister, Janice (David) Sparks of Chasta, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. Dennis was preceded in death by his father. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City, on Friday, Aug. 8, from 3 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 13th and Maple streets, on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to services. The Rev. Robert Zagore will officiate. Burial will follow in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In remembrance of Dennis, and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Munson Hospice. | |||
