Obituaries

AUBURNDALE, FLa. - Raymond George Otto, 63, died Aug. 5, 2003, in Florida. He was born in Alpena on April 20, 1940, to the late Henry Otto and Rose (Jacobs) Otto of the Mount Pleasant Reservation, Mount Pleasant, Mich.
      Ray had always been very proud of his Indian heritage and loving to his family. In later years, his first love was "darts." He was the holder of many titles locally, statewide and nationally.
      Ray is survived by his wife, Irene Otto of Peshawbestown; eight stepchildren, Ernestine Swallows of Winter Haven, Fla., Susan Minch of Sparta, Ernest Chippewa, Pearl Broome and Theodore Dwight "Ike," all of Peshawbestown, Preston Tyler of Suttons Bay, Janice Chippewa of Atlanta, Ga., and James Chippewa of Coldwater.
      Ray was preceded in death by a brother, Silas Otto; sisters, Gladys and Doris; and stepson, Bill Chippewa.
      Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Cemetery, Peshawbestown.
     
      SCOTTVILLE - Rita M. March, age 79, of Scottville passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center in Ludington.
      She was born March 31, 1924, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Charles and Emily (Bershick) Smith. Rita married Robert March on April 11, 1942, in Frankfort, and he preceded her in death Oct. 30, 2001.
      Rita was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, Thomas; her grandson, Jacob March; and her granddaughter, Kimberly Farnsworth.
      She was a member of the Scottville Senior Center, a former member of the Humm-Dingers Singing Club, and attended Victory Trinity Lutheran Church.
      Rita will be lovingly remembered by her children, Shirley (Dennis) Farnsworth of Arcadia, Elbert (Dawnita) March of Interlochen, Mildred (Chris) Smedley and John (Deanna) March, all of Manistee, Mary Gorecki of Kewanee, Wis., David (Dana) March of Ludington and Susan (Tim) Jones of Interlochen; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eleanor Zuidema of Grand Rapids; her special friend, Ford Lidke of Scottville; and many nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Stephens Funeral Chapel in Scottville, with the Rev. B. Douglas Niemi officiating. Burial will take place in Pleasanton Township Cemetery, Manistee County.
      Friends may meet with the family for a time of visitation on Friday from 11:30 a.m. until time of services at the funeral chapel.
      Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Victory Trinity Lutheran Church.
      Arrangements are being cared for by the Stephens Funeral Chapel, Scottville.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Erika Hope Meyer, infant daughter of Robert Alexander and Dr. Karen Lynn (Hirsch) Meyer, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor.
      Erika was born July 24, 2003, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Ind.
      Along with her parents, survivors include her maternal grandparents, Carl and Marilyn Hirsch of Lakewood, Wis.; paternal grandparents, Ken and Barbara Meyer of Birmingham, Ala.; paternal great-grandfather, Robert Newman Jr. of Birmingham, Ala.; paternal great-grandmother, Elizabeth "Betty" Meyer of Matteson, Ill.; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
      Services will be held at the Meyer family home, 10255 N. Deerpath, Traverse City, on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. Allen Boyer will be officiating.
      Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery, Empire.
      Memorials may be directed to either the Holden Gift Fund, in care of Janet Allen at the Holden Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, University of Michigan, 1500 E. Medical Center Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48109; or, to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      JOHN D. STANZ, age 74, of Empire died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.

      CHARLES E. 'CHUCK' STEIN, 73, of Fife Lake died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Arrangements are pending at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
