August 24, 2003ObituariesWILLIAMSBURG - On Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, Nina Faye Shephard, 62, of Williamsburg, went home to be with her Lord in heaven.Born July 31, 1941, in Lake City, Ark., she was the daughter of Herbert Eugene Wood and Lois Louise Walker. On June 20, 1964, in Taylor, Nina married John M. Shephard, her loving companion of almost 40 years. As a primary school educator in Michigan for 34 years, Nina delighted in teaching and learning from young children. She retired in 1998 after 10 years at East Bay Elementary School in Traverse City. Nina had a strong faith in God, and she enjoyed studying her Christian religion. Nina delighted in reading, traveling and spending time with her friends, her family and John, her best friend and devoted husband. Survivors include her husband, John M. Shephard; her son, David M. (Jennifer) Shephard; three grandchildren, Tyler, Aryana and Kara; sister, Carol J. (Robert) Johnson; sister-in-law, Darlene Wood; daughter-in-law, Heather Lawyer; nephews, Michael, Ben, Joel and Douglas Wood; nephews, Gary and Kevin Johnson; and innumerable friends whom she deeply cherished. Nina was preceded in death by her father and mother; brothers, Joel Mack Wood and Ben Gene Wood; and nephew, Mark Dloughy. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at Central United Methodist Church on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be sent to Central United Methodist Church, the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society. The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City is serving the family. EAST LANSING - Joan Reay, age 65, of East Lansing, formerly of Detroit, Traverse City and Americus, Ga., died July 29, 2003. Born May 4, 1938 in Detroit, Joan was a longtime member of Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church in Detroit. While living in Traverse City, she was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Joan was a proud grandma who enjoyed music and laughter with friends and family. Her generosity and kind spirit will be greatly missed. Surviving are two daughters, Christine (Gale Strasburg) Reay of East Lansing and Jennifer Reay of Grand Rapids; two grandchildren, Galen and Sophia Strasburg; three sisters, Pearl Lindquist of Detroit, Mary (Richard) Shepherd of Daytona, Fla. and Genevieve (Robert) McElwaine of Las Vegas, Nev.; nieces, nephews, and Kimm Carlton-Smith, also part of the family. In keeping with Joan's wishes, she was cremated. A memorial service will be included as part of the Sunday services held Sunday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. at Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church, 14456 E. Jefferson Ave., Detroit, with the Rev. Darryl Totty officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to St. Mary's Residence AFC, 2120 Orleans, Detroit, MI 48207, in memory of Mrs. Reay. The family is being served by Gorsline-Runciman Co., Lansing Chapel (517) 482-1533. KEWADIN - Leo C. Coyne, 91, lifelong resident of Kewadin, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Leo was born Oct. 7, 1911, in Nessen City, the son of Thomas and Jessie (McDonald) Coyne. On March 14, 1938, in Thompsonville, he married Margaret Boals. Leo worked for Consumers Power Co. as a tree trimmer and truck driver. He owned and operated Sunnyside Farm, growing apples and cherries. Loving nature, he enjoyed farming, hunting and fishing. But his family, especially his grandchildren, gave Leo his greatest joy in life. Leo is survived by three sons, Ronald (Ruth) Coyne, James Coyne and Thomas Coyne, all of Kewadin, 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Margaret Boals of Kewadin. Preceding Leo in death were two sons, Cecil and Larry; a grandson, Christopher Wilson; three brothers and a sister. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with visitation one hour prior to services. The Rev. Mary Brown will officiate. Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elk Rapids. Memorials may be directed to Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility, Bellaire. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. < ACME - Cecil E. Nickel, 89, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at home. Born Sept. 21, 1913, in Marinette, Wis., he was the son of Edward A. and Lenore (Buckman) Nickel. On Oct. 8, 1935, in Marinette, he married the former Agnes Marie Lundgren, who survives. Mr. Nickel had lived in the Traverse City area since 1980, coming from Birmingham and Torch Lake. He was an insurance agent for his company, Nickel Agency, and a special agent for the FBI. Mr. Nickel was a member of the First Congregational Church in Traverse City, the First Presbyterian Church in Tequesta, Fla., the Tequesta Country Club, the Traverse City Golf and Country Club, the Elks, and the Society of Former FBI Agents-Detroit Chapter. Along with his wife, Agnes, Mr. Nickel is also survived by his son, Laurence E. (Karen) Nickel of Sanford; and his sister, Florence Churchill of Amberg, Wis. Mr. Nickel was preceded in death by his brother, Warren Nickel, and his sister, Dorothy West. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue will officiate. Burial will be in the church's Prayer Garden. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Violet F. Worm, 94, died Friday afternoon, Aug. 22, 2003, at Tendercare of Traverse City. Born Jan. 29, 1909, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Edward G. and Anna R. (Clous) Hoch. A lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, Violet previously owned a farm off Herkner Rd., which she sold in 1992. She held a variety of jobs in the area including working as a nurse aide at Munson Medical Center from 1959 until her retirement in 1974. Violet was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the St. Jude and Sacred Heart leagues. She enjoyed bingo, crocheting, reading, baking, dancing, traveling and gardening. Survivors include her son, Wilford F. (Hazel) Worm; daughters, Evelyn (Merle) Ankerson and Loretta E. (William) Johns, all of Traverse City, Magdaline A. (Daniel) Brzezinski of Cedar and Shirley I. Peters of Traverse City; daughter-in-law, Mary Worm; 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Violet was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond T. Worm and Vincent Worm; son, Arthur E. Worm; brothers, Irvine G. and Gustaf E. Hoch; grandson, Eugene Ankerson; granddaughter, Victoria Worm; and son-in-law, John Peters. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today, Aug. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Monday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Hayden serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. TRAVERSE CITY - Richard Frederick Wenzel, 88, a Traverse City resident since 1965, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Dick died surrounded by his family and went home to his merciful Lord following a sudden illness. Born in Dayton, Ohio, on Sept. 2, 1914, he was the son of Frederick R. and Clara Barbara (Amann) Wenzel. On Oct. 26, 1941, in Dayton, Dick married Harriet Beckwith, and she preceded him in death Jan. 23, 1998, following 53 years of marriage. Dick graduated with a master's degree from Rutgers University School of Banking. He was a member of numerous banking associations and very active in community affairs in the Dayton area. He retired after 43 years as a banker. After his retirement, Dick enjoyed his home on Lake Leelanau and remained active in many local organizations. He enjoyed gardening and was the founding member of the Cherry Capital Rose Society. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay and taught religious education. During the illness of his wife, Harriet, Dick became active in the Northwest Michigan Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and later served as board member. He was instrumental in forming the men's Alzheimer's support group. Dick is survived by five children, Fred of Largo, Fla., Pete of Traverse City, Tim and friend Megan of Brookville, Ohio, Elly (Gary) Swenson of Suttons Bay and Susie (Greg) Matray of Winter Springs, Fla.; three grandchildren, Heather (Chad) Hoke of Brookville, Ohio, and Jeff and Jackie Matray of Winter Springs, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Ashley Hoke; and many nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held today, Aug. 24, from 2 to 9 p.m., at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay, with the Rev. Wayne Dziekan as celebrant. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. The family would like to express their gratitude to the ICU doctors and nurses at Munson Medical Center for their care and great support. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Northwest Michigan Chapter, Alzheimer's Association, 1040 Walnut St., Traverse City, MI 49686, in memory of Dick and Harriet Wenzel. Arrangements by Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. JOYCE ANN DeCAMP, 67, of Bancroft, formerly of Kalkaska, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, in Owosso. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of services. Burial will be in Oliver Township Cemetery, Kalkaska. EDITH JUNE GRISHAM, 95, of Meade, Kan., formerly of Kalkaska, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, in Kansas. Visitation will be Monday evening, Aug. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Excelsior Township Cemetery, Kalkaska. HELEN ROSE VAN BUREN, 85, of Alden, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, in Traverse City. Cremation will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee. No services are planned.
