Obituaries

      RUDOLPH SANTACROCE, 38, of Baldwin, formerly of Manistee, passed away Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003 at his home.
      Cremation has taken place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Living Water Fellowship in Baldwin.The family is being served by the Oak Grove Cremation Center.

      MARIE P. MICHALAK, 93, of Manistee, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Tendercare of Manistee.
      Visitation will take place Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, with an evening prayer service at 8 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Manistee.
     
      Thomas Junior Hummel
      Died November 29, 2003
      TRAVERSE CITY - Thomas Junior Hummel, 82, of Traverse City, died Nov. 29, 2003.
      He was born in Marion, Iowa on May 16, 1921, to Thomas Jefferson Hummel and Dora Cooper. On Mar. 9, 1941, he married Thelma VanWinkle in Newton, Iowa.
      Tom served with the United States Coast Guard following Pearl Harbor on Dec. 26, 1941. He had various jobs while enlisted, but he mainly worked as the aircraft maintenance supervisor. During his time at the Traverse City Coast Guard Station, he flew as an air crewman for search and rescue. Tom was a very social person; he enjoyed getting together with other Coastgaurdsmen and sharing stories. He also played and refereed volleyball with the Coast Guard Team on the city league. Tom loved to read, especially authors Zane Grey and Louie L'amour. After retiring, Tom went on to volunteer at RSVP. He enjoyed helping his neighbors and was known for growing the best tomatoes in the neighborhood. Tom was known to many as "Tough Old Man".
      Tom is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Thelma Ruth Hummel; son, Larry Scott (Joan) Hummel of Emporia, Kan.; daughter, Sherry Hummel of Williamsburg; three grandchildren, Wendy, Devin, and David; and one great-granddaughter, Saige. He is also survived by his dog, Cody.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister.
      The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service, 2 p.m., at Covell Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003. The Funeral Service will be officiated by Rev. Lou Grettenberger. Military Honors under the auspices of the American Legion.

      Clara M. Barnes
      Died November 27, 2003
      KEWADIN - Clara M. Barnes, 71, of Kewadin, died Nov. 27, 2003, at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
      Clara was born Sept. 7, 1932, in Rapid City, the daughter of Samual and Bertha (Lavanway) Sutton. She had resided in Kewadin Since 1950.
      She was employed by the Michigan Department of Social Services as an assistance payments worker, from which she retired in 1989. While employed by Social Services she was active in the Michigan Council of Social Services Workers, serving as chair for the state MCSSW ADC Committee, serving on the Standard of Living Committee, as well as serving on Governor Blanchard's Blue Ribbon Panel for Welfare Reform.
      Clara was a member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, a member of the National Arbor Day Association, and a member of UAW Local 6000. She was a Past Noble Grand of Elk Rapids Rebekah Lodge No. 181. Clara enjoyed gardening and photography, as well as many types of handicrafts.
      Clara is survived by a daughter, Sharon Klapp and son-in-law, Ross Klapp, of Grand Rapids, son, Bruce Barnes Jr., and daughter-in-law, Kathy Marciniak, of New York State, son, Mark Barnes, and daughter-in-law, Lori Barnes, of Southgate; four grandchildren. Matthew Peterson. Andrea Klapp, Alexander Klapp, and Jeffrey Klapp; and three sisters, Myrtle Yoder and Marian Moody, both of Rapid City, and Marie Lawson of Baytown, Texas.
      She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amber Peterson of Grand Rapids.
      A Service of Remembrance will be held Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes with visitation to be held one hour prior to service. Rev. Tom Pier-Fitzgerald of the Elk Rapids United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery Elk Rapids. Memorials may be directed to Cherryland Humane Society through Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      Sharon J. Hill
      Died December 1, 2003
      TRAVERSE CITY - Sharon J. Hill, 73, of Traverse City, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City. She was born in Mt. Clemens, Mich., the daughter of Myrtle (Trombley) and Harvey Fleming. She married Herbert Hill in June of 1970 in Lewiston, Mich.
      Sharon's enjoyment in life came from her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Pine Grove Church of God and liked hunting, fishing and camping.
      She is survived by five children, John (Nancy) Sisco of Roseville, Mich., Cheryl Przywara of Traverse City, Gerald Sisco of Traverse City, Steven (Sherry) Sisco of Grawn, and Lorraine (Vern) Sehl of Traverse City, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and her brother, James (Winkie) Fleming of Sun City, Calif.
      Preceding her in death was her son, Richard "Ricky" Sisco in 1969 and her husband, Herbert Hill, on Mar. 6, 2000.
      Visitation will be on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Thursday Dec. 4, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Pine Grove Church of God with her family gathering one hour prior to the service. Rev. Marc Hoard will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Grove Church of God through Covell Funeral Homes Traverse City.
     
      Dana T. Ostlund
      Died November 29, 2003
      OLD MISSION - Dana T. Ostlund, 95, of Old Mission, died November 29, 2003.
      She was born in Newberry, Mich., on February 2, 1908, to George Lawrence and Anna Roberts.
      Dana married Allen M. Unruh in 1931, who preceded her in death. She then married Frank A. Ostlund in Petoskey, Mich., in 1936, who also preceded her in death.
      Dana was raised in Petoskey, Mich. She started teaching in Osceola County in 1928 and went on to retire from Cherry Knoll School in 1968. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and Old Mission Women's Club, from which she was recently awarded a plaque of recognition for sixty years of membership.
      Dana loved to bake, especially Christmas cookies. She loved birds and enjoyed watching them. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and gardening vegetables and flowers. Most of all she loved being with her family.
      She is survived by Jerry L. Ostlund of St. Louis, Miss.; sisters, Vera (Tony) Tryban of Montague, Mich., Nina (Bill) Stitt of Fishers, Ind.; brothers, Roy (Virginia) Lawrence of Grass Valley, Calif., Earl (Mildred) Lawrence of Youngstown, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Lawrence of Sarasota, Fla., as well as eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
      She was preceded in death by her husbands, Allen M. Unruh and Frank A. Ostlund; son, Allen M. Unruh; sisters, Dorothy Cosgrove and Helen Graseck; brothers, Clair and Elmer Lawrence; and a daughter-in-law, Helen A. Ostlund.
      Visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Covell Funeral Home.
      A funeral service will be held at Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 at 11 a.m. Mr. W.L. Tharp will officiate, and Rev. David Minger will co-officiate. Interment will be at Ogdensburg Cemetery.

      Beverly J. (Janey) Phillips
      Died November 28, 2003
      TRAVERSE CITY - Beverly J. (Janey) Phillips, age 76 of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at home surrounded by her loving family after a two-year fight with cancer.
      She was born in Owosso, Mich., on February 8, 1927, to Harry and Irene Rust. On April 2, 1949, she married Harold Phillips in Angola, Ind. She lived in Owosso until 1958 when they moved to Flint and in 1996, came to Traverse City.
      She had been employed at Universal Electric in Owosso and Kelly Services in Flint. Between jobs, she was a full time mother to their three children. She was a collector of glass pieces, Jan Hagara figurines and "other stuff."
      Janey is survived by her husband, Harold Phillips of Traverse City; two sons, Jerry (Helen) Phillips of Davison, and Denny Phillips and Lynn McGovern of Traverse City; one daughter, Penny Phillips of Traverse City; grandchildren, Ben Phillips, Kristy (Mike) Kermath, Jamie Phillips and girlfriend Angela Smith; sister, Carol (Jack) Holmes of Elk Rapids; brother-in-law, Gene (Donna) Phillips of Tawas, Mich. and Yuma, Ariz.; several cousins, nieces and nephews, beloved grand-dogs, Hunter and Cuppy, and life long friends, Jack and Jeanne Boursmith of Corunna, Mich.
      She is preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Gerald Rust.
      The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. David Michelin and his staff, Hospice nurse, Beth Nussdorfer, and the many neighbors who did so much during her illness.
      A memorial open house will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at 2:30 p.m at the Bayshore Resort, 833 E. Front Street, Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice, 550 Munson Avenue, Traverse City, MI 49686. Envelopes will be available at the Memorial open house or by contacting Oak Grove. Cremation has taken place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee.
      The family is being served by Oak Grove Cremation Center of Manistee.
