Obituaries

      CHARLOTTE - Cynthia Yates, 49, of Charlotte, died Dec. 2, 2003, ending a two-decade struggle with depression.
      Born June 12, 1954, in Charlotte, Cindy received a bachelor of arts degree from Michigan State University in 1981. She lived most of her life in Charlotte.
      Cindy loved fine literature and was a voracious reader. She collected family antiques and photographs and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. She dearly loved her nieces and nephews and her cat, Izzy.
      Cindy is survived by her parents, Rod and Joyce Yates of Charlotte; sisters, Susan of Williamstown, Mass., Judith (Paul Williams), and Kate (Tom Cizek), both of Traverse City; nieces and nephews, Chris, Dave, Andy, Colin, Libbie, Cam, Laura and Donny.
      She was preceded in death by her grandparents and a nephew, Jesse.
      A memorial service at the First Congregational Church in Charlotte is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, with the Rev. Phil Hobson officiating. Friends are welcome to meet the family at the church an hour before the service.
      In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials, in Cindy's name, to Habitat for Humanity, Hayes Green Beach Hospital, or the Charlotte Public Library.

      FRANCES JEAN JACOBS, 78, of Brethren, formally of Manistee, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the Orchard Hill Adult Foster Care Home.
      Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Funeral Services will begin at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Russ Garrigus officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Manistee.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee.
     
      ROSETTA L. PERRY, 82, of Grayling, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Mercy Hospital.
      A memorial service will take place at the Grayling Free Methodist Church, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, Grayling.
     
      THOMAS J. SKUDLARICK, 62, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at his home.
      A complete obituary, with visitation and service times, will appear in Saturday's Record Eagle.
      The family is being served by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      ELLEN R. ZIMMERMAN, 84, of Branch, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, in Branch.
      Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Herbert Funeral Home, P.C., of Manistee. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. following the visitation. Burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery immediately following the service.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Barbara A. Mehigh, 70, of Traverse City, died on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at her home.
      She was born in Traverse City on May 2, 1933, the daughter of Donald and Albina (Rak) Duell.
      Barbara retired from Cherry Growers in 1996 after 21 years of service.
      She enjoyed doing crafts, reading and cooking. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      Barbara is survived by four daughters, Cynthia Mehigh of Grand Rapids, Gina (Loren) Eckerdt of Traverse City, Laurie (Tom) Sisco of Kingsley and Donna Smith of Grand Rapids; her son, Leon Mehigh III of South Boardman; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents.
      Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, from the Covell Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Daniel Davis officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until the time of service.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in her name, to Munson Hospice.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Patricia Ann Powers, 70, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      On Oct. 4, 1933, in Ann Arbor, she was born to LaVern and Grace (Feldkamp) Powers. When she was 7 years old, Pat was adopted by J. Ivan and Geraldine Niergarth.
      Patricia was a 1951 graduate of St. John's High School, and attended Interlochen Center for the Arts and Michigan State University. She worked as advertising manager for the Lane Bryant Company in Detroit during the 1950s, and worked as a nurse's aide for over 20 years at the Grand Traverse Medical Care Facility, retiring in 1997.
      Pat had a deep passion for the arts and enjoyed writing, opera, playing the piano, and at one time had been an off-broadway performer. She also enjoyed flower gardening, cooking and reading.
      Surviving are three children, Christina Greilick, Michael (Rachel) Greilick and John Ivan (Kelly) Greilick, all of Traverse City; two brothers, Jim and Bob Powers; sister, Connie "Ann" Lund; six grandchildren, Amanda, Robert, Jordyn, Jonas, Ricky and Adam; great-grandson, Tyson; and former husband and good friend, L.D. Greilick of Interlochen.
      Pat was preceded in death by her parents.
      A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Pat's life will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Larry Ross will facilitate.
      Memorials may be directed to the Interlochen Center for the Arts.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Marvin D. Mallory Jr., 37, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003. He was the son of Marvin Mallory Sr. and Linda (Lake) Meteer, and a maintenance worker.
      He is survived by his father and stepmother, Marvin and Terry Mallory; grandmother, Mary Lake; his daughters, Roxanna and Gabrielle; son, Chad; sisters, Lori (Kevin) Corchoran and Lisa (Mike) Haney; brothers, Jamie (Dominga) Mallory and Shawn Meteer; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Meteer; grandparents, Horace and Edith Mallory; and by his grandfather, John Lake.
      Funeral Services will be held at McElduff Funeral Home in Benzonia on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at 2 p.m., with viewing beginning at noon. Major Riggs will officiate.
     
      SAGINAW - Frank W. Brechtelsbauer, 78, of Saginaw, formerly of Eastport and Gaylord, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the James E. Cartwright Care Center.
      He is survived by his wife, Edythe Brechtelsbauer.
      The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at the W.L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd., Saginaw. Friends may call at the chapel from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003.
     
      SUTTONS BAY - Eleanor Anne Richardson, 77, of Suttons Bay, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, surrounded by family at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      She was born in Bay City on Aug. 17, 1926, to Bernard and Ruth (Lamereaux) Ward. On June 1, 1946, at St. Joseph's Church in Bay City, she married Albert M. "Buck" Richardson. An area resident for 17 years, she formerly lived in Linwood Beach and Bay City.
      Following a career of teaching and administration in the Bay City-area Catholic school system, Eleanor and her husband, Buck, retired to Suttons Bay.
      She was a member of St. Michael's Parish and was an accomplished pianist. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and enjoyed using the "triple word score" to win the game Scrabble.
      Eleanor is survived by six children, Ann W. (Don) Gregory of Suttons Bay, Fleur J. Bedford of Higgins Lake, Ruth (Richard) Schiattone of Lake Leelanau, Jill M. (Mark) Elzey of St. Joseph and John A. Richardson of Traverse City; her sister, Marilyn Vallez of Shakopee, Minn.; a brother, Wilson Ward of Bay City; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband on April 18, 1996. She was also preceded in death by two children, Marilyn and Bernard; a grandson, Brandon Rokoszs; and a brother, George Ward.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at St. Michael's Catholic Church of Suttons Bay, with the Rev. Wayne Dziekan, celebrant. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Bay City.
      Memorials may be directed to St. Michael's Catholic Church of Suttons Bay, Munson Medical Center's Emergency Department, or the Alzheimer's Association.
      Arrangements were handled by the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Danielle L. White, 35, of Traverse City, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Dec. 2, 2003. She was at home, surrounded by loved ones, at the end of a long battle with cancer.
      Born Danielle L. Johnson on May 30, 1968, in Lansing, she lived most of her life in northern Michigan.
      A graduate of Charlevoix High School, she went on to receive her associate degree at Northwestern Michigan College and was continuing studies for her B.A. through Ferris State University.
      Danielle married Thomas C. White, of Traverse City, in 1987, and they have one daughter, Madelaine, age 7.
      Danielle and Tom have been active in the community. They owned and managed the Great Lakes Submarine Co. restaurants. They were also a host family for several high school foreign exchange students. They were active at Bay Pointe Community Church, where Danielle was part of the drama team. Danielle and Tom were short-term missionary Bible teachers in India. Danielle performed with the Old Town Playhouse, with leading roles in "Glass Menagerie" and "The Philadelphia Story."
      She enjoyed many activities, such as gardening, cooking, traveling and horseback riding (dressage). Her love of reading led her to her last employment at Horizon Books.
      Surviving are her beloved daughter and husband; her parents, Karen and Bob Reid of Lansing; her maternal grandparents, Helen and Louis Piland of Holt; her mother-in-law, Nancy White of Traverse City; her sister and family, Meagan and Kurt Smith, Alex, Emma and Isaac, of Lansing; her uncles, Dr. Lanny Johnson of Okemos and Gregg Piland of Harbor Springs; her aunts, Mary Ann Johnson of East Lansing and Diana Piland of Harbor Springs; her cousins, Dr. Charlotte (Carl) Heideman of Holland, Autumn Johnson of Okemos, Kristen (Jason) Juilleret of Harbor Springs and Marine Lance Corporal Joshua Piland of Harbor Springs. Also surviving Danielle are Tom's loving brothers and sisters, Lysle "Whiz" (Cindy) White of Gatlinburg, Tenn., Roger (Martha) White of Toronto, Canada, Patricia (Pat) Turner of Traverse City, Barbara (Jim) Maitland of Acme; and many nieces and nephews.
      Danielle was preceded in death by her father, Barry Johnson; and her paternal grandparents, Janet and Wid Johnson of Kalkaska.
      A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City, with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to either the Norris Elementary School Library, or to the family, for an education fund for daughter, Madelaine.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
