Obituaries

WILLIAMSBURG - Henry Dean Swartz, 82, of Williamsburg, formerly of Spring Lake, Mich., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at his home. He was born Aug. 14, 1921, to Joseph and Adrianna (Fase) Swartz, in Grand Haven, Mich. He was married to his first wife, Sally Kuiper, from 1942 until her death in 1967; and married to second wife, Ruth Geer, from Dec. 27, 1968, until her death March 22, 1998.
      Mr. Swartz was a graduate of Grand Haven High School. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1948, and earned his MBA in 1968 from Western Michigan University, becoming a registered professional engineer.
      He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theatre and was awarded a Purple Heart. Mr. Swartz worked for Westinghouse Electric following the war, and in 1978, worked in Saudi Arabia and enjoyed world travel during that time.
      He was an active member, and former consistory member, of Christ Community Church, a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, was active in Ottawa County Council on Aging, and started the "Volunteer Tax Preparation" program for seniors.
      He also enjoyed card games (especially bridge), fishing and golfing.
      Survivors include his daughters, Joan (Larry) McKay of Frankfort, Meri-Lynn (Dennis) Gorr of Allegan, Mich., and Barbara (Robert) Heflin of Williamsburg; son, Peter J. (Lori) Swartz of Tualatin, Ore.; six grandchildren, Katherine and Charlotte McKay, Ryan Swartz, Sam and Steve Gorr, and Patrick Heflin; also several nieces and nephews, including Linda Gerber.
      An infant son, Henry Swartz Jr., and his sister, Harriet Bolthouse, preceded him in death.
      A funeral service for Mr. Swartz will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Christ Community Church of Spring Lake, with Rev. Richard Rhem officiating. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery. Friends may meet the family at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003

      TRAVERSE CITY - Thomas J. Skudlarick, 62, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a seven-month battle with cancer. Tom was born on May 13, 1941, in Coldwater, to Louis and LaMoine Skudlarick. He moved to Traverse City as a young child and attended Traverse City schools. In 1958, he married the former Sue Kelenske, who survives. They recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.
      Tom had been employed at DeYoung's Wallpaper, and then Burwood Products. He had been employed there for 32 years, retiring as manager of product planning.
      Tom loved music and enjoyed sharing it with his friends. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, motorcycling and spending time on his boat, "The 4 C's."
      In addition to his wife Sue, Tom is survived by his wonderful daughters ("The 4 C's"), Cathy (Ted) Manville and their children, Marie and Katie, Connie (Bill) Carpenter and their children, Amanda and Karissa, Cynthia Champt and her children, Travis and Christopher, and Caryn (Doug) Sieffert and their daughter, Erika. Also surviving are his sister, Diane (Jim) Wilson of Holland; aunt and uncle, Shirley and Stan Borden of Florida; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann (David) Schick of Ohio and Chris (Sonny) Szejbach of Elk Rapids; a nephew, several nieces and cousins.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      According to Tom's wishes, cremation has taken place.
      Visitation will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
      Memorial services will be held on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at 11 a.m., at First Church of the Nazarene, 1023 S. Division, Traverse City, MI 49684.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice, 1105 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684, or to First Church of the Nazarene.
      The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Tom's doctors, many friends and Hospice personnel for their love and support.
