      Herbert Everett Holmes
      Died December 6, 2003
OMENA - Herbert Everett Holmes, 82, of Omena, formerly of Cadillac, passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. The son of John and Ruth (Fisher) Holmes, he was born on July 19, 1921, in Chicopee, Mass. Herbert married the former Dorothy Jean Benjamin on Dec. 28, 1945, in Croswell.
As a child, Herbert developed a love of nature that became a theme in his life. He and his twin brother became award-winning members of the 4-H club, and both attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
After graduation from the Chicopee Public Schools, Herbert earned a bachelor's degree in Forestry at Michigan State University (and became a life-long Spartan fan).
Herbert served in the United States Army during WWII. Although he went to Italy as part of the Cavalry, he responded to a call for men with heavy weapons training, and thus served with the Infantry in the 85th "Custer" Division. He spent nearly 10 months of his service as a POW. While at MSU, Herbert had met Dorothy, whom he married as soon as he returned from the war.
Upon completing his degree, Herbert was hired by the Consumer's Power Company to manage timber and river lands, a forestry position he enjoyed his entire working life. Millions of trees were planted under his direction. He found beauty in the varied shades and textures of evergreen trees, and wore the effects of decades of pruning blue spruce trees proudly on his arms.
He and Dorothy lived first in Lake City, then Cadillac. In 1983, the Holmeses found an old farmstead in Omena, the perfect place to retire. Always a forester, he planted a small orchard, seedling Christmas trees, a vegetable garden, and a berry patch, all of which he tended until shortly before he died. The fruits of his labors found their most appreciated form in his incomparable homemade pies.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Dorothy; seven children, Lucinda (Peter) Komblevitz of Mackinac Island; Cassandra (Larry) Proctor of St. John's; Mark (Cecelia) Holmes of Round Lake, Ill.; Justin (Judith) Holmes of Milwaukee, Wis.; Molly (Mark) Cybowski of Lowell; Heidi (David) Tagg of Coopersville; Amanda (Daniel Stewart) Holmes of Philadelphia; 13 grandchildren; and by his dog, Lorna. Many friends, relatives, and exchange students also found him to be a wonderful "adopted" father.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edward, in 1994; identical twin, Robert, in April, 2003; and by a daughter, Jennifer Oppeneer, in 1990.
Visitation will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, in Traverse City. A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at the Keswick United Methodist Church, 3376 South Center (633) Highway, Sutton's Bay, with the Rev. Louis Grettenberger officiating.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be directed to The Leelanau Conservancy, P. O. Box 1007, Leland, MI 49654.
