BETH ELAINE CULP, 81, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City. BEVERLY JEAN GREEN, 62, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at home. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. ROBERTA V. 'BOBBI' PICARDAT, 79, of Manistee, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Orchard Hill Adult Foster Care Home, in Brethren. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee, with Father William Zwiefka, celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee. Prayers from the Order of Christian Funerals will be prayed on Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at 8:15 p.m, at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements. JULISSA NOEL THOMPSON, stillborn, of Traverse City, went to be with her Lord on Dec. 6, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. A funeral service will be held for Julissa at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. FRANKFORT - Eugene D. Rogers, 91, of Frankfort, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at The Maples. Eugene was born on July 10, 1912, in Detroit, the son of Eugene D. and Marie (Lauth) Rogers. On May 20, 1949, he married Margery Miller. Eugene grew up in the Detroit area, graduating from Birmingham High School, and attending Wayne State University, where he majored in business administration. He began working for IBM in 1939, where he was a sales trainee. During his 31-year career with IBM, he held various management positions, retiring in 1970 as the Division's community relations representative. Eugene and his family had been summer residents of Frankfort for many years. Upon his retirement, he purchased the Garden Theatre and ran it for three years. Eugene was very active in the community, serving as the Secretary of the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of Directors of Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, and as a former member of the Rotary Club of Frankfort. Eugene was instrumental in the planting of trees along Main Street in Frankfort, and was the co-chairman of the Glider Festival. He was also a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Beulah. Eugene is survived by his wife, Margery Miller; his children, David (Caren) Rogers of Juno, Alaska, Gregory Rogers of Traverse City, Robert (Debra) Gilbert of Ann Arbor, and Judy (Dr. Bill) Moss of Santa Ana, Calif.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pat Wilkinson of Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elizabeth. Memorial services will be held this summer and will be announced by the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, who is serving the family. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider either The Maples, St. Philip's Episcopal Church, or the Benzie County Animal Welfare League. MANTON - Wanda Hammer, 89, of Manton, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, as a result of an auto accident. She was born to Leslie 'Pat' and Bernice (Stinson) Tremain on Nov. 3, 1914, on a farm west of Kingsley. On Nov. 3, 1934, she married Jay Hammer in Kingsley. Wanda grew up in Kingsley, and graduated from Kingsley High School in 1932. She attended St. Mary's School of Nursing in Grand Rapids, and Highland Park Junior College. She worked at Mercy Hospital as an RN night supervisor, along with helping her husband with his trucking business. She then returned to college in 1962, and earned a degree in Child Psychology and Sociology from Central Michigan University. She worked for many years as a school social worker for the Wexford Missaukee ISD. Wanda served on the Tri-County Handicapped board for many years. She recently became a member of the Manton Area Retirees Club, and enjoyed her time spent there with her friends. She was an avid reader and kept up on current events. She always put others before herself, and was devoted to her fellow man. She loved animals and birds, especially her dogs, Puppy and Babe. She dearly loved her family and grandchildren. Wanda is survived by her son, James (Claire Ann) Hammer of Marshall; daughter, Sally (Dallas) Norman of Manton; sister Mary Gustner of Seneca, S.C.; six grandchildren, Sherry Gorlewski, Marri Jo Dawson, Perry Norman, Mickie Sue Viox, and Jason and Jeff Hammer; 10 great-grandchildren; and three foster children, Cheryl 'Deeda' Heemstra, George Keen, and Becky Abshire. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Hammer, on July 4, 2000; brother, Harold; sister, Opal; and foster daughter, Barbara Emerick. Visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, in Kingsley. Memorial Tributes may be made to the Manton Senior Center or the Manton Alumni Scholarship Fund. TRAVERSE CITY - Grace M. Kohn, 95, of Traverse City, formerly of Mesick, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born Feb. 9, 1908, in Marilla, she was the daughter of Albert and Della (Humes) Joseph. On June 7, 1936, in Onekema, she married Lloyd M. Kohn, and together they built their home in Mesick, in 1936. Grace graduated from Mesick High School in 1926, received her bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University, and her master's degree from Michigan State University. She taught school for Harrietta, Cadillac, and Mesick Schools for 35 years, and was elementary principal in Mesick for 18 years. Grace's parents started Joseph Supply in Mesick, and she helped in the office when her sister was not available, especially after her father passed away. Grace and Lloyd were part of the group that helped Roy and Ellen Brigman start Camp Roy-El, a camp for physically handicapped children. She helped the 40 years that it was active. Grace had many memberships including Munson Medical Center Auxiliary, Mesick Golden Agers, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, Michigan Association of Elementary Principals, NEA, MEA, Traverse City Business and Professional Women, Mesick Women's Club, and the Mesick Chamber of Commerce Women's Auxiliary. She was a member and treasurer at Mesick United Methodist Church, chairman of Mesick Centennial Committee until it changed its name to Mesick Historical and Museum Committee, and she co-chaired the publishing of the book on the history of Mesick. Grace loved to garden, read, and correspond with family and friends. With her correspondence, she was able to bring different branches of the Mesick family together at the Centennial in 1990, after which she kept in contact with many of them. She loved helping other people, especially driving them to and from appointments, and 'adopting' young people, encouraging them in a positive way. Grace is survived by her daughter, Deborah Sue Kohn of Traverse City; sister, Ruth Denison of Houston, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, on Nov. 11, 1971; sisters, Wretha Brastrom, Lois Brastrom, Lucille Sprague, Verna Solarick, and Vera MacPhee; and a brother, Harry Joseph. Visitation will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, on Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Mesick United Methodist Church on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Jack Conklin will officiate. Burial will be in Sherman Mesick Cemetery. In remembrance of Grace, memorial contributions may be directed to Mesick Area Historical Museum or to Mesick United Methodist Church. CHELSEA - Ruth Louise Krupp, 91, of Chelsea, passed away peacefully on the morning of Dec. 9, 2003, in Towsley Village, at the Chelsea Retirement Community of Chelsea. Ruth was born in Eau Claire, Wis., on Aug. 19, 1912, the daughter of Hugh and Anna (Ovig) Boyd. She was raised and educated in Minneapolis, and moved to Detroit in 1936, where she met her husband, John A. Krupp. They were married on Dec. 31, 1938, and resided in Detroit until 1981. They then relocated to South Lyon. John preceded her in death in 1985. Ruth was employed at Henry Ford Hospital, then became a loving homemaker and active community leader. She served as President of the University of Minnesota Women's Club, was a member of the Detroit Council of Parent Teachers Association, and served in various scouting and volunteer positions. She will be remembered for her devotion to her husband and family, and her love of nature. Ruth was diagnosed with dementia, possibly Alzheimer's, in 1993, and her family has grieved her loss every step of the way. The staff at Chelsea Retirement Community have been invaluable in easing her transitions, creating the best quality of life possible, and supporting her family through this passage. She is survived by her daughters, Mary (David) Robb of Chelsea, Nancy (Bruce) Romant of Ann Arbor; son, John (Jan) Krupp of Traverse City; granddaughters, Emily and Anna; step-grandchildren, Michael, Jeannie, Carrie, and their families; and three nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel, Chelsea. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Internment will be in the South Lyons Cemetery, South Lyons. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Towsley Village, United Methodist Retirement Community of Chelsea.
