December 12, 2003ObituariesKEITH ALAN GARITY, 60, of Thompsonville, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at The Maples in Frankfort.Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home, on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in the Thompsonville Cemetery. IRENE MCGINNIS, 79, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at her home. A complete obituary will run in a later edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, Kingsley. GRAWN - Kevin B. Curtis, 49, a lifelong resident of the Grand Traverse area, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at home. Born on April 18, 1954, in Traverse City, he was the son of Bruce N. and Helen (Fowler) Curtis. On Aug. 13, 1983, in Traverse City, he married the former Lavon Gallup. Kevin had been employed in the printing business. He loved to golf, and was a member of Federal Order of Eagles #383 of Traverse City. Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Lavon of Grawn; son, Benjamin Curtis of Traverse City; daughters, Elizabeth Curtis of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Kaley Curtis of Grawn; sister, Nancy (Bill) Henderson of Lake Pepin, Wis.; and granddaughter, Mackenzie Curtis. Kevin was preceded in death by his parents. Private family services have been held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association. Arrangements by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Arlene D. Hazzard, 82, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at Tendercare of Traverse City. Born Feb. 5, 1921, in Ludington, she was the daughter of Clyde and Jennie (Hamilton) Hazzard. Arlene spent her childhood years in Grand Rapids, later spending 30 years in Chicago, 12 years in Cleveland, and in 1983, retiring in Traverse City. While living in Chicago, she had been employed with Carson, Pirie, Scott and Marshall Field Company. Arlene later worked as a Senior Companion, assisting disabled clients in foster care, as well as patients at Grand Traverse Medical Care Facility. She also volunteered at GrandTraverse Pavilions. Arlene was a cat lover and enjoyed painting and drawing. Survivors include her sister, Lois (Herm) Kremers of Ada; brother-in-law, Thomas Murphy of Red Bluff, Calif.; nieces and nephews, Peggy (Ron) Orth of Traverse City, Suki Deaver of Baltimore, Karen (Ed) Pankow of Montague, Kathy (Paul) Horvath of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Michael (DeeDee) Rose of Michigan. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marian (Rose) Murphy; brother, Lee Hazzard; and a niece, Judy Diemer. Services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Ron Sinclair will officiate. Cremation will take place following the services. Memorial contributions may be directed to either the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association. GRAND RAPIDS - Alvin A. Klingenberg, 44, of Grand Rapids, formerly of South Haven, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Spectrum-Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born on June 21, 1959, in Mio, to Alvin F. and Margaret (Miller) Klingenberg. Alvin graduated from Alcoma High School. He worked as a nurses aide in home health care for five years. For the last 20 years, he was also a hair dresser. Alvin loved to horseback ride, paint, and garden. He is survived by his father, Alvin F. (Miriam) Klingenberg of South Haven; his mother, Margaret Klingenberg of Elkton; three brothers, Cliff (Theresa) Klingenberg of Moriah, N.Y., Robert lingenberg of South Haven, and John (Andrea) Klingenberg of Duyess Airforce Base, Texas; three sisters, Kathleen (Jerry) Green of Hamilton, Patricia (Dennis) Forrest of South Haven, and Kay (Larry) Modrak of Pullman. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m., at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven. Memorial contributions can be made to the Grace Foundation. The family is being helped by the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home of South Haven, 637-0333. LAKE LEELANAU - Karlene Ann Sharnowski, 55, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at her Lake Leelanau home. She was born in Traverse City on March 14, 1948, the daughter of Albert and Myrtle (Larson) Sharnowski. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda (Bruce) Anderson of Kent City; sons, Andrew Korson of San Diego, Calif., and Steven Korson of Cedar; five grandchildren; and her sister, Marie (Tom) Korson of Suttons Bay. She was preceded in death by her parents; half-brother, James Fuller; and half-sister, Eleanora Sharnowski. Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 13, at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Reynaldo Garcia will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Leelanau County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay handled arrangements. TRAVERSE CITY - Beverly Jean Green, 62, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, peacefully at home. Memorial services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Women's Resource Center. TRAVERSE CITY - Beth Culp, 81, of Traverse City, died on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Born Nov. 2, 1922, in Fremont, she was the daughter of Arthur and Millie Miller. Beth was a graduate of Michigan State University, where she received a degree in Horticulture. She had been employed by Millikens as a baker, and was well known for her wonderful cinnamon rolls. A resident of the Grand Traverse area since 1964, Beth was very involved with the activities at Riverview Terrace. She also received great enjoyment from her volunteer work with the Father Fred Foundation and the Commission on Aging, of which she received many awards. Beth is survived by her children, Mary Culp of Miami, Fla., Greg Culp of Hesperia, Theresa (Ray) Berlin of Largo, Fla., and Danny Culp of Grand Rapids; daughter-in-law, Jan Casey of Holland; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and caregiver and close friend, Rose Miller. She was preceded in death by her sons, Mike in 1949, and Pat in 2002. Memorial services will be held at the Riverview Terrace, third floor Community Room, 150 Pine St., Traverse City, on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Fr. Patrick Maher will officiate.
