BOGIN, 60, of the Traverse City area, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Battle Creek. Arrangements will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. CORTLAND K. GORE, 75, of Traverse City and Vero Beach, Fla., went to be with his Lord on Nov. 27, 2003, after a brief battle with brain cancer. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Central United Methodist Church. ROBERTA MAE HANKINS, 79, of Thompsonville, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the services. JOHN HARLAN HICKERSON SR., 46, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2003. A full obituary will appear in Monday's Record-Eagle. Arrangements are pending at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. RUTH LINDENBAUM, 89, of Central Lake, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at 2 p.m., at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Interment will take place in Southern Cemetery in Central Lake. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Arrangements are being handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. HERBERT J. OLSON, 87, of Traverse City, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. WALTER SADOWSKY, 88, of Manistee, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee. Visitation will take place at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Johnson Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of arrangements. ALDEN - Percy R. Crothers, 80, of Alden, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Dec. 12, 2003, at Spectrum Hospital, Blodgett Campus, in Grand Rapids. He was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Alden, the son of Alvah and Effie (Harriman) Crothers. Percy was a lifelong resident of Alden. He was employed by Cone Drive Gear in Traverse City for 25 years before retiring in 1987, and was a trustee of Cone Drive Gear Retirees Local #21. A longtime and active member of the Alden United Methodist Church, Percy held various offices and was a member of the church's Men's Group. Percy was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed reading his Bible, as well as western novels. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. On Sept. 6, 1942, in Central Lake, he married Geraldine Zimmerman, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Percy L. (Louise) Crothers of Jenison, James A. (Melba) Crothers of Alden, and Annette L. (Joseph) Jeltema of Grand Rapids; a sister, Myra (Robert) Alspaugh of Traverse City; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were a sister, Leila Patton, and his parents. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Alden United Methodist Church, with Pastor Chuck Williams officiating. Interment will take place in Helena Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alden United Methodist Church. TRAVERSE CITY - Agnes M. Danek, 92, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. She was born in Chesaning on Aug. 24, 1911, the daughter of Charles and Matilda (Dornton) Mandel. The family remembers Agnes as being a great cook. She liked to take walks and loved nature and animals, especially her special cat, Smokey. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Agnes is survived by her children, Jennifer (Greg) Johnstone of Traverse City, Barbara (Daniel) Shanahan of Texas, Joseph (Jacqueline) Danek of North Carolina, and James (Janice) Danek of Traverse City; and 16 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Joseph Danek; three brothers and one sister. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. this evening, Dec. 14, at Central United Methodist Church, with Rev. Tamara Williams. Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City is serving the family. ANN ARBOR - L. Michael Hager passed away at U of M Hospital on Dec. 9, 2003, at the age of 56. Michael was born in Lansing, on Feb. 23, 1946. Although Michael spent his formative years and young adulthood in Traverse City, his permanent residence for much of his adult life was Eagle River, Alaska. Michael was a carpenter who worked on large commercial construction projects in Alaska and throughout the Northwest. The last three years of his life, he resided in Quepos, Costa Rica, where he owned and operated a fishing charter business. Michael was preceded in death by his mother Patricia E. Hager, of Traverse City. He is survived by his Father, Gerald M. Hager of Traverse City; his brother, William G. Hager, nephew, Jerry M. Hager, and grandnephew, Devon, all of Traverse City. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Dana A. Walters and her husband Gregory, nephew, John Walters, and niece, Margaret Walters, all of Hickory Corners. Michael was an avid reader and outdoor person who loved to hunt and fish. He was an amateur ventriloquist and painter. He took every opportunity to travel, and chose to live his life to the fullest. His tales of travel and adventure are famous, and will sustain his memory to all that knew and loved him. A memorial service and sharing of Michael's memories will be held at Louie Sleder's in Traverse City on Jan. 24, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please bring your memories and stories to share with all of his family, and those who were part of 'Irish Mike's' life. SUTTONS BAY - Amelia Elizabeth Green, 91, of Suttons Bay, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born in Bingham Township on May 14, 1912, the daughter of William and Adelaide (Groesser) Meereis. On Oct. 5, 1940, she married Robert Earl Green in Keswick. A teacher and librarian, Amelia taught at the Solem School, Leland School, and at schools in Grand Traverse County. She also served on the Suttons Bay school board. Amelia will be fondly remembered for the cookies she enjoyed baking for her family and friends. She was a wonderful seamstress and loved knitting for her children. She had the distinction of being the member in longest standing at the Keswick United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and served as church historian. Amelia is survived by her husband, Robert Green; four children, Roberta (Jerry) Kolak, Juanita Jupin, William (Joan) Green and Lorene (Mike) Biek; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rhea Burge. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Arthur; a sister, Alvera; and a son-in-law, Ron Jupin. Visitation will take place Monday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Keswick United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Wayne A. Price will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Keswick. Memorial contributions may be made to Suttons Bay Public Library or to Keswick United Methodist Church. TRAVERSE CITY - Vercel Edler Matte, 91, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen; loving father of Paula Matte, Karen (Kurt) Schmidt and Craig (Lynn) Matte; proud grandfather of Keith, Kristin, Mark and Eric; great-grandfather of Isabel, Carter and Miles; and dearest brother of Bea Bennett. Visitation will take place today, Dec. 13, from 2 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. scripture service, at the Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons Inc., 36900 Schoenherr at Metro Parkway (16 Mile), Sterling Heights. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Grand Traverse Regional Foundation-Botanical Garden. < MAKAHA BEACH, Hawaii - Mary Marie Morse Robinson, of Makaha Beach, Hawaii, formerly of Traverse City, was delivered into her God's keeping on Dec. 2, 2003. She was born and raised in Traverse City, and resided there until 1971, when she moved to Hawaii, where she lived and worked in the real-estate industry for many years. Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by one son, Glen Pat Robinson of Hawaii; two daughters, Carrie Robinson Durbin of Arizona, and Judy Robinson Heller of Hawaii; five grandchildren, Mary Pat Compagnari and Todd Heller, both of Traverse City, Amy Lerew of Ovid, Steven Stechschulte of San Antonio, Texas, and Ty Heller of Hawaii; great-grandchildren, Emily, Allison, Rob, Kyle, Sara Rose, and Katie Autumn. A celebration of her life will be held on Jan. 17, 2004, when her ashes will be scattered in the ocean off Makaha Beach. Ashes will also be placed in the Memorial Garden at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City, where she was a life member, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials to Mary be made to Hospice. TRAVERSE CITY - Max Logan Wysong Sr., born Dec. 21, 1920, in Traverse City, passed away Wednesday Dec. 10, 2003. Max graduated from Traverse City Central High in 1939. He attended Michigan State Normal College (Eastern Michigan) until enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He married Betty Jane Underwood that same year before going overseas as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 79th Fighter Group. Max flew 94 missions in the European Theater, earning the rank of Captain. He was awarded the distinguished flying cross and the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters. After World War II, Max returned to Traverse City with his wife. Over his business career of 30 years, he founded and owned Peninsula Asphalt Corp., developed Maple Terrace subdivision, Logan Hills subdivision, Logan's Landing, and Logan Racquet Club (now YMCA). Max also donated some of his land for the development of South Airport Rd., and for Medaly Park. He also donated his men and equipment to develop the Big Swede ski hill at Hickory Hills. Max was past president of the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce, past president of Traverse City Rotary, past president of Michigan Sand and Gravel, past board member of Michigan Asphalt Paving Association, and was a past board member of Michigan National Bank (T.C.). When Max's wife B.J. (a former Mrs. Traverse City) passed away in 1976, Max sold his business interests and had dual residency in T.C. and Longboat Key, Fla. In 1978, Max was remarried to Ashley E. Smith of Pasadena, Texas. Max and Ashley spent the rest of his time living in T.C. in the summer and Florida in the winter. Max is survived by his wife, Ashley; and his five children by his first wife, Betty Jane (B.J.) Wysong: Max Jr., Merry Lee, Peter, Mark and Josh; three step children; and 15 grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Please send any donations to Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Fla., in loving memory of his surviving family. A public memorial service will be planned for early June in Traverse City.
