December 15, 2003ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Herbert Justin Olson, 87, of Traverse City, died Saturday evening at Munson Medical Center.Herb was born on May 23, 1916, in Escanaba, the son of Herbert T. and Margaret (McCarthy) Olson. He was a 1936 graduate of Crystal Falls High School. He then attended Michigan State College, graduating in 1942. Herb joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Philippines during World War II as a radar communications specialist. After the war he moved to Traverse City to teach in the public schools. In 1965 he and his family moved to Royal Oak, where he was a teacher and principal. Herb then became the director and designer of the North Oakland Vocational Education Center in Oakland County. After his retirement in 1976, Herb moved back to Traverse City. He will be remembered as a man with a great sense of humor who was friendly to everyone. His many words of wisdom will always be remembered by his family and grandchildren, whom he loved very much. Herb enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading, oil painting and the out-of-doors, especially walking and hiking. He also loved to sing, and sang in the first barbershop quartet in Traverse City. Herb was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, to which he was very devoted and loved very much. He was also a member of the Elks Club, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club in Clarkston and the Optimist Club in Traverse City. Herb married his college sweetheart, Reva I. Gough, on Oct. 11, 1940, in Lansing. She preceded him in death in 1998. On Oct. 9, 2002, in Traverse City Herb married Dorothy (Gilbert) Kreag, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Gail (Tom) Kearey of Berkley and Cathryn Gabriel of Traverse City; two sons, Robert (Norma) Olson of Royal Oak and Charles (Susan) Olson of Suttons Bay; a brother, Robert (Faye) Olson of Crystal Falls; and a sister, Mary Davis of Milwaukee, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were three brothers, Norman, Charlie and an infant brother. Friends may call today, Dec. 15, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Grace Episcopal Church, with the Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser officiating. Following cremation, burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Cherryland Post #2780. Memorial donations may be made to the Third Level Crisis Center or to the American Heart Association. KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Orilla A. Thompson, 84, passed away in her sleep on Dec. 6, 2003, at her home in Kissimmee, Fla. The beloved mother and wife was born Orrilla Aleathea Wilson on May 17, 1919, to Ruben and Mary Wood Wilson in Kingsley. After graduating from Western Michigan University, she taught high school science before joining the Women's Army Corps in 1942, as a chemist. After World War II, she worked as a chemist/researcher at Edgewood Arsenal in Edgdewood, Md., where she met and married William Howard Thompson in June of 1949. She worked as a chemist at Michigan State University for two years before joining her husband in operating Thompson's Frandor Jewelers in Lansing. After retiring in 1981, Bill and Orrilla traveled the U.S. in their motor home. Since 1998, they have spent winters in Florida, and summers at their home in Eaton Rapids. Orrilla is survived by Bill Thompson, her husband of 54 years; daughters, Nadine Thompson of Lansing, Shasta (Lenard) Burzynski of Sault Ste. Marie and Maja (Sam) Fields of Kerrville, Texas; and by her sons, Howard (Trang) Thompson of Lansing and Terrill Thompson of Eaton Rapids. Also surviving Orilla are eight grandchildren, Lisa (Dan) Burzynski Spang, Julie Burzynski, Lucy Michelle and Maria Thompson, Kirk, Adam, Andrea and Gloria Fields. She is preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Donna Burzynski; and siblings, Thelma Hollingshead, V. Lee Wilson, Ivan Wilson, Ruben Wilson, Halcyone Hollingshead, Maureen Johnston, Lionel (Billy) Wilson and Mary Billideau. There will be a memorial in Michigan at a later date, and inurnment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Mich. Orilla A. (Wilson) Thompson was proud to be a charter member of, and memorials may be sent in her name to, Women's Memorial, Women in Military Service Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 96742, Washington, D.C. 20090-6742. TORONTO - Julia Elizabeth Jones, 44, of Toronto, died Nov. 22, 2003, at home. She grew up in Traverse City and was a violinist for the Toronto Symphony. She is survived by her husband, Alan Rossi; her 6-year-old son, Eliot; her parents, Mary Cobb and Paul H. Jones; sisters, Betsey and Martha. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister, Mark and Jennifer Jones. A memorial service was held in Toronto. TRAVERSE CITY - John Harlan Hickerson Sr., 46, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. He was born in Howell on Oct. 15, 1957, the son of Harlan E. and Ruth (Hautamaki) Hickerson. On July 29, 2000, he married Julie Yanosky at Old Settlers Park on Glen Lake. John graduated from Glen Lake High School in 1975. He enjoyed playing golf and pool, and loved the out-of-doors. He loved spending time with his wife and family. John worked for Honor Lumber as a contractor sales representative. He was committed to his work. John is survived by his wife, Julie of Traverse City; daughter, Heather Hickerson, and son, John Hickerson Jr., both of Traverse City; stepson, Jared LaCharite, at home; parents, Harlan and Ruth Hickerson of Trout Creek; sisters, Carol Maki of California, and Nancy Weathers of Traverse City; brothers, Robert Hickerson of North Las Vegas, Nev., and Jim Hickerson of Traverse City; nephew, David Rogers of Traverse City; niece, Shawn Rogers of East Jordan; a great-niece, Kaitlyn; a great-nephew, Andrew; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation will take place Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the funeral home, with Pastor Larry Ross officiating. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery. TRAVERSE CITY - In the presence of her family members, guardian angels ushered Margaret Catherine (Musil) Atkinson of Traverse City to her heavenly home on Saturday afternoon. For 86 years she enjoyed a full and satisfying life. She was born in Bohemian Settlement in Leelanau County on April 9, 1917, the daughter of Edward and Agnes (Dvorak) Musil. On Nov. 10, 1945, in Empire, she married Wilmer E. Atkinson, who preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 1978. Margaret worked at Cherry Growers Inc. for 25 years, and also at Morgan's. She loved to crochet and do crafts, and also loved polka music. She enjoyed spending time with her family and playing euchre. She is survived by her three children, Robert (Patricia) Atkinson of Maple City, Joan (Gerald) Rifenbark of Interlochen and Wilmer Atkinson of Syracuse, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Gregory (Alice) Atkinson, Robert Atkinson, Brian (Nichole) Atkinson, Sarah (Dan) Valbak, Angela and Gerald Rifenbark, Margaret, Kurt, Kimberly, Wilmer and Troy Atkinson; and 19 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, John Musil of Traverse City and Edward (Bessie) Musil of Bohemian Settlement. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Musil, and a sister, Rose Huffman. Margaret will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her or being touched by her grace. Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday morning, Dec. 17, at the church, with Father James Hayden as celebrant. Burial will follow in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In memory of Margaret, contributions may be made to the Father Fred Foundation. BASS-PERKINS, 81, of Bear Lake, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 18, at Bear Lake United Methodist Church. Cremation has taken place at Oak Grove Cemetery. Edwards Oak Grove Funeral Home of Bear Lake is in charge of arrangements. KEN E. BINDSCHATEL SR., 76, of Frederic, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Visitation will take place today, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling. HOARD, 68, of Traverse City, died Saturday evening, Dec. 13, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. JOHN ISHEL, 63, of Mesick, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Lakeview Manor in Cadillac after being ill for the past year. Visitation will take place today, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Linda Carlson of the Manton United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Sherman-Mesick Cemetery. ROBERT J. PFEUFFER, 79, of Traverse City, died at home Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003.
