There will be no local services. Herbert Funeral Home, Manistee. HELEN JANE MYERS, 85, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Cherry Hill Haven, following an extended illness. Services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003. Friends may call from 1 p.m until the time of the service. The Rev. Fr. Garth Hilmer will be officiating. Burial will be in Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach, Fla. JOHN A. ORWOSKY, 73, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. HELEN GRACE SIERA, 89, of Traverse City, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Ritter's Senior Adult Living Center. A full obituary will run in tomorrow's edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements are being handled by Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. ROCKFORD - Mr. James R. Bacon, 78, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at his home. Mr. Bacon graduated from Niles High School in 1944. When the call of his country was heard during WWII, S/Sgt. James Bacon marched away as a brave young man with an abiding faith in his God, his country, and his flag, to serve as a forward observer with General Patton's 3rd Army. He retired from the maintenance department at Rockford Public School System. Prior to that, he owned a small motel in the Traverse City area. Mr. Bacon also worked for the Post Office in Battle Creek, and Butterfield Theaters. He was a member of the St. Joseph Valley Lodge # 4 F & AM, the VFW Post #3946 in Rockford, and a former member of the Lions in Battle Creek. Mr. Bacon his survived by his children, Phillip Steven Bacon of Morristown, Tenn., Merrick R. and Kimberly Bacon of Zeeland, and Michelle A. Bacon of Talbott, Tenn.; his grandchildren, Elizabeth, James Neale, Agnes, and Michael; and a very special friend, Sue Ward. He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Esther (Nichols) Bacon; and by a brother, Ralph Herbert Bacon. The service for Mr. Bacon will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at The Pederson Funeral Home in Rockford. Interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Frday morning, where they may meet Mr. Bacon's family from 9 a.m until the time of service. Arrangements are being handled by The Pederson Funeral Home, Rockford TRAVERSE CITY - Roger Stephan Bogin, 60, of Grand Rapids, and a former 30-year resident of Traverse City, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Regional Medical Center in Battle Creek. Roger was born in Chicago on April 27, 1943, the son of Jeanette (Harvey) and Ernest Maurice Bogin. After attending high school, he earned his bachelors degree in social work. Roger was a veteran of the Viet Nam War and had been employed in motel and resort management. He held memberships in the Motel and Resort Association of Grand Traverse and Benzie Counties, the Kiwanis Club of Crystal Lake (Benzie Co.), the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Bayside Travelers. He was also a member of Temple Beth El in Traverse City. Roger loved to dance, play his guitar, sing, and fish. One of his greatest loves was cooking and entertaining at home. Survivors include his children, Sara Bogin of Chicago, and Daniel Henry Bogin of Traverse City; his sister, Sherry Bogin Hirsch, and her husband, Dr. Arnold Hirsch, of Chicago; his nieces Deborah Hessert and Ellyn Shapiro; and a great nephew, Noah Shapiro. Also surviving are his loving companion, Jackie Gage of Grand Rapids, and his former spouse, Betty Boudot of Traverse City. Roger was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec 18, 2003, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City. Rabbi Jonathon Plount will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to Gilda's Club, Temple Beth El, or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available from the funeral home. MICHIGAN - Dr. Dale L. Oxender, a native of Michigan, passed away on December 11, 2003, after an extended illness. He was born on August 30, 1932, to Harry and Myrtle Oxender. He is survived by his wife, Jean, of 48 years; two sons, Derrick (Jane) and Theodore (Maritza); two grandsons, Andrew and Bryan; one sister; and three brothers. Dr. Oxender was a member of the Dixboro United Methodist Church in Ann Arbor, and St. Marks United Methodist Church of Tucson, Ariz. He has been an active participant in church work all his life. He took undergraduate studies at Manchester College, in North Manchester, Ind. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry from Purdue University in 1956 and 1959, respectively. Dr. Oxender served as Director of the Center of Molecular Genetics at the University of Michigan from 1986 to 1990. He is known internationally for his innovative research contributions in the area of biochemistry of proteins, bacterial cell transport, and genetics. He retired from the University of Michigan, after a highly productive career as an instructor and scientific investigator, to become Vice President for Biotechnology at Warner Lambert Parke-Davis. After ten years of service, Dale retired as Distinguished Research Fellow Emeritus from Warner Lambert Park-Davis. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. at Trinity Church of the Brethren, 27350 W. Chicago, Redford, on Jan. 10, 2004. In lieu of flowers, the Oxender family has set up the Dr. Dale L. Oxender Memorial Fund. The proceeds of this fund will be used to award an annual scholarship to a student, on the basis of merit, majoring in science at Manchester College, Dale's alma mater. Pfeuffer, 79, of Traverse City, went to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 20, 1924 in Saginaw, he was the son of Robert and Frieda (Spitz) Pfeuffer. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School, and spent most of his life as a teacher with the Kalkaska High School music program, as their director. Music was Bob's passion; he always enjoyed listening to a good marching band. On June 12, 1948, he married his sweetheart, the former Ellen P. Castner, who survives. After serving in the United States Army during World War II with the 9th Infantry Division, Bob returned to the University of Michigan and Albion College, where he completed his studies. He was always proud of being a member of the Michigan marching band, Albion's A Club, and a Sigma Chi brother. Bob will be fondly remembered for his love for golf and watching a Michigan football game. He loved playing cards, being outside, working on numerous counted cross-stitch projects, and spending time with his family and friends. A longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he served as an usher. He also served as past president of the Retired Teachers Association. Along with his wife, Ellen, of 55 devoted years, Bob is also survived by his three children, Robert Pfeuffer of Traverse City, Sheryl Pfeuffer, and Bonnie (Jerry) Dzuber, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren, Kelli (Matt) Phelps in Germany, Kyle Pfeuffer and Allison Pfeuffer, both of Traverse City; three great-grandchildren, Ella, Claire and Matthew Phelps; sister, Ruth Pfeuffer of Saginaw; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer (Lorraine) Pfeuffer of Tucson, Ariz., and Albert (Dorothy) Pfeuffer of Lafayette, La. He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Alice Pfeuffer. At Bob's request, a memorial service will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. Pastor Robert Zagore will be officiating. TRAVERSE CITY - With her family at her bedside at Munson Medical Center, Emma lost her three year battle with lung cancer Saturday night. She was 68. She was born Emma Wilhelmina Jacoba Van der Linden on May 5, 1935, in Surabaia, Java, Dutch East Indies. She later lived 10 years in the Netherlands before emigrating to the United States, where she became a U.S. citizen. As a youth in Holland, Emma enjoyed playing softball and other sports, loved music, and performed as a classically trained pianist. She met and married her husband, David, while serving in the United States Air Force at Travis Air Force Base in California, while working as an administrative specialist and a part time interpreter. Emma enjoyed many sunsets, campfires, and motor-homing through all 50 states and Canada. Among her fondest memories will be those trips out west. She will be remembered by family and friends as a gracious hostess and homemaker, wonderful cook, and for her strong views on life. Emma is survived by her husband of 42 years, David Edward Hoard of Traverse City; daughter, Donna Leigh (Andy) Hagerty of Kalamazoo; son, Frank Jeffrey (Starla) Hoard and Emma's granddaughter, Ashley, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Roosje Van der Linden of Palmdale, Calif.; and other loving extended family members. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Raymond Hoard; her parents, Jacoba and Johannes Van der Linden; and brothers, Joseph and Otto. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Emma asked that all those wishing to make memorial contributions consider the American Cancer Society. FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Anna Schneider, 93, of Midland and Beulah, died Dec. 12, 2003, surrounded by her family in Fort Collins, Colo. Anna was born on Nov. 14, 1910, in Tuscarawas, Ohio to the late Florence Van Lehn and Joseph Frantz. On March 21, 1930, she married Donald R. Schneider, who preceded her in death on May 8, 1969. Anna enjoyed cooking, knitting, walking in nature, and was an avid Bridge and card player. She divided her time between her home in Midland and her cottage on Crystal Lake, in Beulah. She is survived by her son, David Schneider, and his wife, Joy, of Fort Collins, Colo.; her daughter, Jacqueline Walke of Duncanville, Texas; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Gertrude Gordon Siebert; her brother, Elmer Frantz; and her son-in-law, Randolph Walke. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial is being scheduled in Midland later this summer. BELLAIRE - Charles William Sheneman Jr., 87, of Belllaire, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Charles was born on May 16, 1916, in Bowbells, N.D., the son of Charles Sr. and Neva (Corey) Sheneman. On June 1, 1946, in Mancelona, he married LaVerne C. Delle, who survives. Charles lived in Antrim county, where he farmed, for most of his life. During WWII, he was a Pharmacist Mate, First Class, Third Marine Division of the United States Navy. He was a member of the St. Luke Catholic Church, and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by three children, Michael J. (Jamie) Sheneman of Bellaire, Thomas P. (Rod Fuller) Sheneman of Bellaire, and Susan M. Sheneman of Bellaire; a brother, Victor (Marge) Sheneman of East Lansing; four grandchildren, Chad and Stacy Sheneman, and Danny and Beth Fuller; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles III, in 1973; his parents; three sisters, Lenore Brake, Ruth Rhinehart, and Pearl McPherson; and by a brother, Fred Sheneman. A Wake service will be held at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at 8 p.m., Sr. Celine Goessl officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church, in Bellaire, on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at 11 a.m., Fr. Dale Magoon as celebrant. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Custer Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Antrim County Commission on Aging or the St. Luke Memorial Building Fund. FRANKFORT - Jean E. Ecker, 88, of Frankfort, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Mrs. Ecker was born in Detroit, on March 18, 1915, the daughter of Charles and Bernice Hunt. Jean was a member of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, where she was past treasurer, a board member of Braidwood Manor, a member of the Women's Business Association, and a charter member of Davison Country Club, where she enjoyed golfing. Jean is survived by her children, Bill (Sue) Ecker and Robert H. Ecker; her sister, Shirley A. Hunt; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, L. William, in 1962; her daughter, Jean Shufelt, in 2001; and by her sister, Naomi K. Ford, in 1969. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 1523 Oak Rd., Davison, with Rev. Scott C. Danforth officiating. Mrs. Ecker will lie in state at the church on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Mrs. Ecker will also lie in state on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison, where the family will receive visitors, from noon to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, in Detroit. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church or a charity of your choice.
