She accepted life's challenges with spirit, a strong sense of responsibility, and a delightful sense of humor. She remembered with great fondness her experiences growing up on the family farm near Walled Lake. She relished helping her father, Fred German, with field and livestock chores, and cherished the friendship of her sisters, Alice (Marshall) Ruhno and Freda (Richard) Williams, and brother John (Pamela). In the early 1930s, she dared to drive her mother, Lela, and Johnny "out west" in a Model A, because it had been so many years since Lela had seen her parents in Oregon. Grace earned a teaching degree from Michigan State Normal College, where she met star athlete, Walter Siera. They were married in 1941, and lived more than 25 years in Dearborn, before buying a small resort on Lake Leelanau. Her kind, nurturing ways and exemplary ethics allowed her to become an extraordinary teacher of first grade students for nearly 20 years in Dearborn and 10 years in Suttons Bay. Grace was a practical woman who consistently looked for the goodness in all people. Her children, Bob (Meeghan) and Pat (Dick) Cookman, and grandchildren, Gregory (Micah) Siera, Robb (Becky) Cookman, and Jane (John) Metzger, were blessed with the constancy of her unconditional love. A memorial gathering of her family will be held in Dearborn in May.
