DEBORAH LYNN SHANNON, 54, of Bellaire, died on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at home. Private family services will be held. Arrangements by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. DEWAYNE M. 'BALDY' WALLER, 72, of Brethren, formerly of Flint, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. The Terwilliger Funeral Home, in Kaleva, is in charge of arrangements. RUXTON G. WISNER, 88, of Grawn, died on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Visitation will be held on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covelll Funeral Homes. Balesh, 87, of Traverse City, died on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was born on Nov. 5, 1916, in Solon Township, the daughter of Martin and Anna Bugia. Esther married Fred Balesh, who preceded her in death. Esther sold Stanley Home products for 55 years, with 35 years as district manager. She was a loving and caring person, who enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her great-grandchildren. Esther is survived by her son, James Sr. (Arlene) Balesh; grandson, James Jr. (Robin) Balesh; granddaughters, Brenda (Douglas) Schaub, Tammy (Jeremy) Murchland; great-grandson, Joshua Balesh; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Balesh; and step-granddaughter, Samantha Utter. She is also survived by her brother, Adolph (Anna) Bugia; sisters-in-law, Helen Bugia and Ardith Bugia; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death be her son, Richard Balesh; a sister, Mary; and brothers, Steve, Stephen, Julius, and Gordon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at 11 a.m., from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Rev. James Hayden as celebrant. Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Covell Funeral Homes, Traverse City Chapel, where a Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Saturday, at the church, from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to The Cedar Rescue unit or The Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools. Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes. KALEVA - Martha Agnes Kaskinen, 78, of Kaleva, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003 at Munson Medical Center, following an extended illness. She was born on April 11, 1925, in Kaleva, the daughter of August and Hilja (Hiipakka) Harju. On Sept. 20, 1947, in Kaleva, Martha married Norman Kaskinen, who survives her. Martha attended Benzie County Normal and West Shore Community College. She taught elementary children at Hoxeyville Public Schools for one year, and continued teaching for several years as a substitute teacher. During World War II, Martha was employed as a secretary at Hudson Motor Car Company in Detroit. Martha has also been the director of the Children's Choir at Bethany Lutheran Church, in Kaleva, for many years. Martha was a member of the Bear Creek VFW Post #6333 Ladies Auxiliary, Bethany Lutheran Church Women's Group, and the Northwestern Michigan Antique Automobile Club of America. She also served as president of the Kaleva Women's Club for several years. She truly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Along with her husband, she is survived by four children, Anne Marie (Bert) Kaskinen Chapman of Edisto Beach, S.C., Barbara Kay Kaskinen of Margate, Fla., Deborah Lynne (Wayne) Kaskinen Crandell of Traverse City, and Richard Ferdinand (Sandi) Kaskinen of Kaleva; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Karen) Grossnickle, Nadine Grossnickle, Marc Grossnickle, Kimberley Crandell, Lauren Crandell, Kristin Kaskinen, and Daniel Kaskinen; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Evan Grossnickle; two brothers, Clarence (Carol) Harju of Kaleva, and David (Jamie) Harju of Bear Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; and by two brothers, Elwyn Harju and Milton Harju. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Bethany Lutheran Church, in Kaleva, with Pastor David Gabel officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, from 6 p.m to 8 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Lutheran Church Music Fund. Envelopes are available at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.
