      GERALD L. 'DUKE' SMITH, 59, of Mesick, died on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at his home.
      Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at 2 p.m., from the Foursquare Lighthouse Church, 196 S. 1/2 Road, Boon, Mich.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes.

      SCOTT JAMES UHAN, 39, of Kaleva, died on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at his residence.
      Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with Reverend Russ Garrigus officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday Dec. 29, 2003, from 3 p.m. to 5p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., also at the funeral home.

      James A. Raphael
      Died December 23, 2003
      BINGHAM TOWNSHIP - James A. Raphael, 44, of Bingham Township, formerly of Peshawbestown, died on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003. He was born on Oct. 15, 1959, in Grant, to Howard and Elsie Raphael.
      He is survived by two daughters, Iris Shomin of Cross Village, and Ashke Shomin of Peshawbestown; four sons, Gizhigante Raphael, Keshap Shomin, Noodin Shomin, and Gingwak Shomin, all of Peshawbestown; his mother, Elsie Raphael of Peshawbestown; seven sisters, Sharon Kennedy of Benzonia, Barbara Raphael of Peshawbestown, Roseanne Raphael of Peshawbestown, Helen Raphael of Maple City, Shirley Raphael of Denver, Sandra Raphael of Peshawbestown, and Kathryn Raphael of Peshawbestown; one brother, Howard Raphael of Peshawbestown; and five grandchildren.
      Visitation will be held at the home of Kathryn Raphael, 1112 Kitigan Street, off of Roubal Road, Peshawbestown, at 6 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, until noon on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at which time James will be moved to the Medicine Lodge in Peshawbestown, where a funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the spring.
      Arrangements are being handled by Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.

      Henry James 'Hank' McChesney
      Died December22, 2003
      TRAVERSE CITY - Henry James 'Hank' McChesney, 81, of Traverse City, died on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003.
      Hank retired from the Highland Park Fire Department as Fire Marshall.
      He is survived by his wife, Ethel; children, Shyr Vedder of Grand Rapids, and David (Becky) McChesney of Clarkston; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Robert McChesney of Detroit.
      Friends may call at the Lewis E. Wint & Son TRUST 100 Funeral Home in Clarkston, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, also at the funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Alpena.
     
      Marian L. Hudson
      Died December 22, 2003
      KINGSLEY - Marian L. Hudson, 90, of Kingsley, died on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born on Dec. 10, 1913, she was the daughter of Edna (Hurst) and William Curtis.
      Marian loved her family, lived a long life, and enjoyed her pets. Earlier this year, her entire family gathered together to celebrate her ninetieth birthday, one of the highlights of her life.
      She will be missed by two daughters, Mary Hopkins of Traverse City, and Rebecca Burnett of Kingsley; three sons, Daniel Hudson of Kingsley, Gerald Brown of Belding, and William Brown of Coopersville; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Hayes of Marshall; one brother, David Curtis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Hudson; and two sons, Robert and Theodore Brown.
      A memorial service will take place in the spring of 2004.
      Memorial contributions may be made, in Marian's honor, to the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.

      Shirley E. Leikert
      Died December 23, 2003
      CEDAR - Shirley E. Leikert, 75, of Cedar, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003.
      Through her years, she was a registered nurse, a volunteer, a friend, a sister, a grandmother, and aunt, and most importantly, a wonderful wife and mother.
      Shirley was loved by, and dedicated to, her family. George was her childhood sweetheart, whom she met when she was 12 years old. Her kind, gentle, and loving personality will be missed by all who knew her.
      Shirley is survived by her daughter, Shari Leikert of New Baltimore; her son, Howard (April) Leikert of Lowell; sisters, Joyce (Fred) Stackable of Cedar, and Arlone (Robert) Russel of Portage; one granddaughter, Amy Beth Leikert; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, George.
      Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at 11 a.m., at the Fountain Street Church Chapel, 24 Fountain NE, Lowell. Rev. Nurya Love Parish and Rev. Melody Johnson will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Cedar.

      Billie Jo Cole
      Died December 23, 2003
      TRAVERSE CITY - Billie Jo Cole, of Traverse City, formerly of Minnesota, died on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at home. Born in Morgantown, W.Va., Billie Jo was the daughter of Elton Lee and Mildred (Herriss) Frankenberry. On Jan. 23, 1965, in Hudson, Wisc., she married Gary D. Cole, who survives.
      Over the years, Billie Jo had been employed as a newspaper reporter in Minnesota and Texas, as well as doing freelance writing throughout the country. She enjoyed writing poetry and genealogy.
      Along with her devoted husband, Gary, Billie Jo is also survived by her mother, Mildred Frankenberry of Chapel Point, Pa.; six children, Charles Thomas (Jane) Cole of Texas, Jean Esther (Joe) Dunlap of N.J., William Bryant (Stacy) Cole of Texas, Christian Gari (Howard) Hornbeck of Corona, Calif., Ashley Paige (Chad) Enloe of Texas, and David Douglas (Kate) Cole of Chicago, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Kiona and William Cole, Andrew and Austin Hornbeck, and Kate, Cole and Camryn Enloe; two sisters, Shirley (Palmer) Zerbe of Pennsylvania, and Janet (Gordon) Barker of Bolivia; and a brother, Walter (Linda) Frankenberry of Pennsylvania.
      She was preceded in death by her father in 1997.
      No services are planned at this time. Per Billie Jo's wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Michigan Medical School.
      Memorials may be directed to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.

      Kathryn M. Thornberry
      Died December 23, 2003
      MAPLE CITY - Kathryn M. Thornberry, 91, of Maple City since 1952, died on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born on Sept. 21, 1912, in New Castle, Pa., to Norman A. and Orpha M. (Downs) Morse. In 1930, she married her first husband, John William Penn, who preceded her in death in 1939. In 1944, she was married to Harry A. Thornberry, who, in 1961, also preceded her in death.
      Kathryn was employed as a bookkeeper, and since 1952, has owned and operated a resort on Little Traverse Lake.
      She was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Toledo, Ohio, and a member of the Maple City Community Bible Church. She was a volunteer reading tutor at the Leelanau Public School, and loved spending time with the children at the day care center in Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
      Kathryn enjoyed reading and collecting bells, loved harp music, and collected amber glass.
      She is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline Janders of Glendale, Ariz., and Patricia Penn Brewer of Petaluma, Calif.; one son, John William Penn of San Diego; and one sister, Alice Marie Hensley of Lubbock, Texas; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
      In addition to her husbands, Kathryn was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Ella Haney; and two sons, Norman Arthur Morse and Leroy Eugene Morse.
      A funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at 1 p.m., at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, with visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Township Cemetery, in the spring.
      Memorial conributions may be directed to Maple City Community Bible Church.

      Edna Breithaupt Martin
      Died December 20, 2003
      TRAVERSE CITY - Edna Breithaupt Martin, 82, of Riverview, formerly of Traverse City, died on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, in Ann Arbor. Edna was born on April 2, 1921, in Solon Township, the daughter of Bertha (Killman) and Joseph Breithaupt. Edna married Nicholas Martin, who preceded her in death.
      She received her education from Immaculate Conception School. Edna moved to the Detroit area and lived there all of her adult life.
      She was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Trenton, and had been employed as a clerk with the Orange Blossom Diamond Company. She had also been a waitress for many years at some of the extravagant Detroit restaurants, making the acquaintances of many notable sports figures and business people. She liked to secure autographs from the sports figures for her nieces and nephews.
      She and Nick enjoyed to travel and she continued to do so after his death. She loved to dance, especially polkas, and loved the sunshine, warm weather, swimming, fashion and bingo. With Edna, everything was an adventure.
      She is survived by her sister, Marie (Versel) McCrumb of Ann Arbor; a brother-in-law, Dan Weber of Traverse City; her sisters-in-law, Phyllis Breithaupt and Rose Breithaupt, both of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew who has been tremendous to Edna over the years, Carl Breithaupt, Jr.
      In addition to her husband, Edna was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Dorothy Weber, Margaret Felisky, Regina Collins, Charles, Carl, and James Breithaupt.
      Visitation will take place on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with the rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Michael Janowski serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of your choice.
