Obituaries

      J. ROSS (JULIUS R.) BUSH, 94, of Williamsburg, formerly of Grosse Pointe Park, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

      WALTER HENRY HARRIS SR., 71, of Mount Morris and Benzonia, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at his residence.
      Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Benzonia Township Cemetery.

      VINCENT G. HERKNER, 90, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Arrangements will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.

      HELEN LOUISA LEWIS, 99, of Leland, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
      Private family graveside services will be held at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.
      Arrangements have been handled by Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay.

      GRACE T. MALECKI, 86, of Manistee, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      Visitation will take place Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, with an evening prayer service at 8 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Manistee.

      WILLIAM L. MILES, 86, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
      Friends may call Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.

      BRYAN KEITH PETE, 45, of Manistee, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
      The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, with prayers from the Order of Christian Funerals at 8:30 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home, with Father James Bearss, celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Manistee.

      CLAYTON SHESSIA died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at his home in Kalkaska.
      Visitation will take place today, Dec. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, with a scripture service at 7 p.m.
      A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Kalkaska, with visitation one hour prior to the service.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Laura Marie Wallington, 86, of Traverse City, passed away on Dec. 27, 2003, in Indianapolis, Ind.
      Laura and her late husband, Wallace Lewis Wallington, owned their own accounting business in Utica. They retired to Kalkaska in 1978, and in 1992, relocated to Ocala, Fla.
      She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme, and a graduate of St. Rose High School in Detroit.
      Laura, who touched the lives of many, especially enjoyed spending time with her large family and numerous friends.
      She is survived by her children, Maureen Alice (Jerry) Scane of Sunman, Ind., Wallace Thomas (Nora) Wallington of Lapeer and Daniel Joseph (Theresa) Wallington of Traverse City; 15 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
      In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Brian Lewis Wallington; all five of her brothers; and one sister.
      Services will be held at 7 p.m., today, Dec. 29, 2003, at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Centers-Speedway, in Indianapolis, with visitation three hours prior to the services. Laura will be laid to rest with her beloved 'Wally' at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., at a later date.
      Memorial contributions may be made, in Laura's honor, to the Heart Center of Indiana in Carmel, Ind., or Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Elizabeth "Gladys" Breithaupt, 81, of Traverse City, died suddenly Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, with her family at her side at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. For many years she had struggled with Diabetes and severe heart problems.
      Born April 26, 1922, in Cedar, she was the daughter of Belle Rose (Popa) and Bernard J. Stanislawski. Gladys married James J. Breithaupt Aug. 10, 1940, in Isadore.
      Gladys' love and pride for her family cannot be measured. True blessings we were to her! She taught us lessons that can never be found in any book - lessons of true love, unending praise, hard work and unequivocal blessings. Her life and gifts of our lives will be treasured forever.
      Gladys was employed over the years as a Michigan Bell Telephone operator, a housekeeper at Interlochen Arts Academy and as a press operator at Four Stars, Inc. She also continually farmed with her husband their entire time together.
      Gladys enjoyed collecting Avon and salt and pepper shakers, playing cards and bingo, and painting. She loved her music, especially playing her guitar, yodeling and whistling. She was an excellent cook and baker, never allowing anyone to leave her home without a good meal. Every activity and hobby brought fulfillment to her heart.
      She will be forever missed by her four children, Phyllis G. Breithaupt of Cadillac, Sharon M. (Larry) Biedron of Traverse City, Jim (Arvena) Breithaupt Jr. of Thompsonville and Carolyn R. (Marlin "Sonny") Gutzka of Traverse City; the pride and joy of her life, her 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dan Weber of Traverse City, Versel (Marie) McCrumb of Ann Arbor and Phyllis Breithaupt of Belleville.
      Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, James, on May 24, 1987; a brother, Leonard Stanislawski; and numerous loving brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
      Visitation will take place Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The service will be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Jankowski. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
      Memorials may be made to the Grand Traverse County 4-H program, or the Commission on Aging.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
