ILENE E. HATFIELD, 73, of Grayling, died on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at home.
      Visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. today, Dec. 31, 2003, at Sorenson Funeral Home in Grayling. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grayling. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
      Arrangements are being handled by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling.
      MARTIN L. 'OLE' JOHNSON, 76, of Kingsley, died on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are pending.
      A full obituary will appear in a later edition of the Record-Eagle.
      The family is being served by Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      RYAN C. MALLISON, 26, of Manistee, died on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003.
      The family will receive friends at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home, with Pastor James Schroeder officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee.
      The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.
      TRAVERSE CITY - Beverly J. Cardamoni, 77, of Traverse City, died on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at her home. She was born on Sept. 30, 1926, in Sault Ste. Marie, the daughter of Albert and Angie Nelson. Beverly has resided in Traverse City for the last 33 years.
      She is survived by her daughter, June Streeter of Traverse City; sister, Norma Lounds of Sault Ste. Marie; four grandsons, Robert Strobridge Jr. of Dover, Del., Cory Streeter of BlueBell, Pa., and Craig and Cale Streeter of Ypsilanti; and by a great-grandson, Evan of BlueBell, Pa.
      Preceding her in death are her parents; a son, Robert J. Strobridge; a grandson, Brian Streeter of Traverse City; and a brother, Robert Perault.
      In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Services for the family will be held in Sault Ste. Marie at a later date.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging or a charity of your choice.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      GLEN ARBOR - Grace Newcomb Cochran, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at her home in Glen Arbor.
      Grace was a graduate of The Leelanau School (class of 1946) and Mt. Holyoke College (class of 1950), where she actively served the Alumnae Association and the Arts Council for many years.
      She has been a beloved member of the community throughout her life, serving on numerous civic and church boards. Most notably, Grace served as a Past President and Board member for the Traverse City Symphony and the Glen Lake Community Library, a Board member of WIAA-Interlochen Public Radio, the Glen Lake Garden Club, and the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Glen Arbor. Prior to moving to Northern Michigan in 1980, Grace was a long time resident of Hinsdale, Ill., and served as President of the Woman's Athletic Club of Chicago. She was actively involved in numerous organizations, including The Junior League of Chicago. She also served as a docent at the Art Institute of Chicago.
      Grace's religious faith was a constant source of comfort and strength for her throughout her life. As a Christian Science practitioner, Grace sought to extend her own faith through helping others. A truly selfless commitment was given to her church and the principles upon which it stands.
      Grace will be remembered for her ceaseless spirit, faith, love and courage. Her sense of family and community will long serve as an inspiration for all who have been fortunate enough to know her. During her nearly 50-year marriage to Philip Lee Cochran, she and Phil came to exemplify all that is good and true in a relationship built on unquestioning love, devotion and an eternally youthful sense of romance. These attributes were expressed freely and continually to all, and serve as a true legacy.
      She is survived by four children, Philip, George, Corinne and Annabel Moore; 12 grandchildren; and countless acts of love and generosity.
      For her family, friends and all those she touched, one thing has been proven; she was grace in every sense of the name and word.
      A memorial service will be held at a later date.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Glen Lake Community Library, P.O. Box 325, Empire, MI 49630, 231-326-5361, or to the Benevolent Fund of Glenmont, a Christian Science facility which provided care for Grace, 4599 Avery Road, Hillard, OH 43026, 614-876-0084.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Johanna Berg Baynton, 97, of Traverse City, died on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born on Aug. 29, 1906, in Keswick, she was the daughter of Leonard and Charlotte (Kunold) Berg. On June 2, 1923, at Lees Bay, she married Elmer Baynton, who preceded her in death in 1981. She lived her entire life in the Traverse City area.
      She was employed by the Traverse City Psychiatric Center for 29 years, retiring in 1973, as a nursing supervisor.
      She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, The State Retirees Association, and was past president and a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary F.O.E.
      Johanna's deep attachment to her family, and to each individual, is best expressed by their feelings of specialness created through her endearing sense of unconditional love and acceptance.
      Surviving are her children, Phyllis (William) Blanchard of Petoskey, Robert (Loretta) Baynton, and Sharon (Charles) Varner, all of Traverse City; grandchildren, Jeffrey Blanchard, Jannifer Blanchard, Sally Blanchard, Cindy (Tom) Zipp, Lauri (James) Gartner, Rick (Sharon) Baynton, Tom Baynton, Marcia (Sam) Madsen, Charles Varner Jr., Michael (Ruth) Varner, and Jodi Varner; one sister, Bernice Drake; and two brothers, Kenneth (Charrie) Berg of Traverse City and Donald (Monique) Berg of Key Biscayne, Fla.; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; her parents; sisters, Martha Kunold and Kathryn Bellows Percival; and brothers, Walter, Alfred, Leslie, Harold, Karl, and Leonard Berg Jr.
      Special thanks for all the services provided by the Pavilion and its staff, particularly those at Birch, who also became a special family for Johanna.
      A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2004.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Central United Methodist Church, Westland Guild, or the Father Fred Foundation.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Lillian M. 'Dolly' Butkovich, 85, of Traverse City, died on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born Nov. 4, 1918, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Frederick and Mathilda (Loewe) Jacobi. On April 15, 1939, in Detroit, she married Phillip A. Butkovich, who preceded her in death on April 16, 1979.
      Dolly had been a resident of the Traverse City area since 1972. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Senior Center and the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band.
      Dolly will be fondly remembered as a strong woman who deeply loved and supported her children, and always put their needs before her own.
      Survivors include her children, Mary Ann (John) Kennedy and Phillip (Margaret) Butkovich, all of Acme, Thomas (Jeanette) Butkovich of North Carolina, Karen (Lawrence) Fecteau of Port Huron, Janet (John) Marusic of Fayetteville, N.C., Marilyn Butkovich of Traverse City, William Butkovich of Troy, Betty Ann (Michael) Regan of Rochester Hills, Diane (Dale) Chamberlain of Grawn, Annette Butkovich of Traverse City; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence (Jean) Jacobi of Wisconsin.
      Along with her husband, Phillip, Lillian is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George and William Jacobi; and a sister, Louise Barnash.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Mapleton, on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Father Edwin Thome will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in Acme Township Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Vern Milford Shugart, 83, of Traverse City, died on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born June 29, 1920, in Bingham Township, he was the son of Oscar and Ladessa (Shreeve) Shugart. On March 2, 1946, in Traverse City, he married the former Gertrude Opal 'Trudy' Durga, who survives.
      Vern served his country honorably with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, from 1942-45. In 1952, Vern founded Shugart Builders.
      He attended Central United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Home Builders Association of Grand Traverse Area and the Builders and Traders Association (now known as the Builders Exchange).
      Along with his wife, Trudy, Vern is survived by his children, Gregory (Cookie) Shugart of Suttons Bay, Gary (Mary) Shugart of Vashon, Wash., Marcia (Jim) Servis of Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Scott) Swan, Jason (Kristen) Shugart, Paul Servis, Rosie Servis, Sam Shugart, Joe Shugart and Grant Johnston; great-grandchild, Maxwell Oscar Swan; and brothers, Kenneth (Marie) Shugart and Rex (Ione) Shugart, all of Traverse City.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Eugene, Keith and Ralph.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Central United Methodist Church on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at 1 p.m. The Rev. John Ellinger will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Medical Center.
