Obituaries

PETOSKEY - Victor S. Countryman, 44, of Petoskey, died in the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 8, at Northern Michigan Hospital following a valiant battle with lung cancer.
      Born Aug. 18, 1958, in Ionia, he was the son of Charles H. and Joan Y. (Mason) Countryman. Vic was a 1976 graduate of Petoskey High School and had resided in Petoskey most of his life. He was a well-known chef on Mackinaw Island and in the Petoskey area. Vic was a history buff and an avid sports fan.
      On Oct. 15, 1998, in Boyne City, he married the former Elizabeth M. Foley. Together they owned and operated the Mackinaw Restaurant in Boyne City.
      Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; his parents, Charles and Linda Countryman of Bellaire and David and Joan Pake of Cheboygan; two daughters, Alexis Henslee and Kelly Clark, both of Petoskey; five brothers, Van (Sandy) Countryman of East Jordan, Kelly (Pamela) Countryman of Bellaire, Gary (Kim) Keiser of Milwaukee, Wis., Kevin (Jean) Keiser of Bellaire and Daniel Kay of Bellaire; two sisters, Katie (Keith) Verellen of Bellaire and Jennifer (Jeff) Smith of Bellaire; his maternal grandmother, Myrtle Mason of Gaylord; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Jagger.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 11, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
      The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the funeral home with Pastor David Scott officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan.
      A memorial service will be held in the spring on Mackinaw Island with the date, time and place to be announced at a later date.
      Memorials may be directed to family intentions.
      TRAVERSE CITY - Anna "Annie" Kirkland, 85, of Traverse City, formerly of Kalkaska, died Feb. 4, 2003, at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      Anna was born May 17, 1917, in Ritzville, Wash., to Fred and Flora (Pea) Webster.
      She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Traverse City and enjoyed crocheting, gardening, flowers, reading and cooking. Talking and visiting with family and friends brought her much enjoyment.
      She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Hines, and her second husband, Gaston Kirkland, and one great-great-grandchild, Jasmine Pringle.
      Anna is survived by two sons, Daniel Hines of Traverse City and Terrance Kirkland; two daughters, Barbara Hines of Atlanta, Ga., and Patricia (James) Pringle of Alden.
      She also is survived by 17 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
      A memorial service for Anna Kirkland will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, at 12:30 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1950 Chase Road, off of Hartman. Forest Locke will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kingsley.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes, Traverse City.
      TRAVERSE CITY - S. Dorothy (Lott) Griffith, 99, of Traverse City, died Saturday at her home.
      She was born July 9, 1903, on a Centennial farm in Holt owned by her parents, Frank C. and Susan (Bullen) Lott, located on Aurelius Road, Delphi Township in Ingham County. On May 29, 1926, in Holt, she married Harry M. Griffith of Howell.
      Dorothy attended schools in Holt and Lansing, as well as Michigan State Normal School and Cleary Business School. She taught all commercial subjects in the Evart High School, where she organized a Girl Scout Troop.
      Dorothy was a member of Grawn United Methodist Church, Gunton Women's Club, past matron of Traverse City Chapter #147, Order of Eastern Star, past president of Meguzee District of O.E.S., and was active in P.T.A. and Union Street School Mothers Singers. She worked as secretary and bookkeeper for many years at Clinton Office Equipment, Inc. in Traverse City. Dorothy especially loved gardening and the outdoors.
      Survivors include her three sons, Richard (Mary) Griffith of Bloomfield Hills, James (Nancy) Griffith of Plymouth and John (Janet) Griffith of Traverse City; nine grandchildren, Lori Baker, Susan Monroe, Jacqueline Wallace, Kathleen Bailey, Steven Griffith, Jennifer Day, Stacey Griffith, Scott Griffith and Michael Griffith; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
      Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Griffith; brother, Casper Lott; and two sisters, Esther Wilds and Lucille Lott.
      Funeral services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m., where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Daniel Biteman will be officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the National Multiple Sclerosis Association, Michigan Chapter, or the charity of one's choice.
      TRAVERSE CITY - Phyllis Ann Borden, 57, a homemaker of Grawn, died Sunday afternoon at Munson Medical Center.
      Born June 30, 1945, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Leon and Irene (Worm) Dobson.
      Phyllis is survived by her husband, Jim Borden of Grawn; two children, Thomas Borden of Traverse City and Jaime (Buddy) Lambert of Traverse City; and one sister, Eleanor (Robert) Whiteside of Floral City, Fla.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Dan Dobson; and two sisters, Leona Butrick and Donna Cavitch.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Wednesday evening, Feb. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Ross officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Maple Grove Cemetery in Grawn.
      TRAVERSE CITY - Lois A. Gofrank, of Traverse City, died Sunday. She was 76.
      Lois was born in Pikeville, Ky., on Jan. 23, 1927, the daughter of Jesse H. and Florence (Ratliff) Childress. She married Matthew Kuhnke in Rockville, Md., in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1965.
      Lois enjoyed caring for others during her career in nursing. She loved her family and loved to laugh. She was very devoted as a mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.
      Lois is survived by two daughters, Dianne (Donald) Stierle and Mary Roe, both of Traverse City; a son, Mark Kuhnke of Elk Rapids; a sister, Sijne Emma (John) Holloway of Traverse City; a grandson, Kenneth Roe; four nephews, three great-nephews, and a great-niece.
      In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Dana, in 1973; and her parents, Florence and Jesse.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 11, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with visitation one hour prior to the services. Rev. Garth Hilmer will officiate. Interment will be Traverse City Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 525 W. 14th St. Traverse City, MI 49684, or to the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan.
      ELIZABETH A. 'BETTY' KADROVACH, 74, of Elk Rapids, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
