Obituaries

MANTON - Patrick Wilson, 45, of Manton died Saturday morning, Feb. 15, 2003, at home following an eight-month battle with cancer.
      He was born Sept. 30, 1957, in Cadillac, to Ray and Donna (Downey) Wilson. A lifelong Manton-area resident, Patrick graduated from Manton High School in 1975. He was a military veteran and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the submarine USS Shark. Patrick married his high school sweetheart, Carol Morris.
      Patrick was employed for a short time in the construction business but for the past 20 years had worked in forestry as a logger. He was a hard worker who enjoyed spending his free time riding motorcycles, woodworking, boating, traveling and being in the outdoors, especially in the woods.
      He is survived by his wife, Carol of Manton; his son, Joshua Morris of Cadillac, and his daughter, Chelsea Wilson of Manton; his foster daughter, Casandra (Charlie) Boersma of McBain; his parents, Ray and Donna Wilson of Fife Lake; and his three brothers, Donald (Brenda) Wilson of Manton, Michael (Cora) Wilson of Fife Lake, and Daniel (Nancy) Wilson of Fife Lake.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton.
      Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Rollins Christian Fellowship Church in Manton, with Pastors David Martin and Robert Lanning officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Township Cemetery, Manton.

      JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - Doris Thunstrom, 87, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at the Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Fla. after a stroke and a short illness.
      Doris was born Jan. 15, 1916, in Traverse City, the daughter of Reefy and Ethel (Champney) Stratton. Following her childhood years in Traverse City, she moved to Milan, Ohio, to live with her grandparents for her high school education. Upon graduation, she moved back to the Traverse City area.
      She worked in the Michigan school systems and the Michigan State Department of Mental Health as a secretary. Doris retired from the State of Michigan in 1979, and at that time moved permanently to Acme where she resided until the fall of 2002. At that time she moved to Florida to be near her son.
      She was a member of the Methodist Church, the Elks, Daisy Chain and the P.T.A. Doris enjoyed time spent with her family, and also was active in bowling, golf and gardening. She also enjoyed cooking and probably has set several records for the number of dirty dishes one can make to create a meal.
      Doris is survived by her three children, Roger Lyon of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Bruce Lyon of Calumet, Mich., and Susan Massart of Husum, Wash. She is also survived by her brother, Larry Stratton of Grand Blanc, and her sister, Pat Gauthier of Traverse City; stepdaughter, Christine McClain of Grand Rapids, and stepson, Steven Thunstrom of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Orville, sister Velma, and one son. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Kenneth "Bill" Lyon and second husband, Stig O. Thunstrom.
      In accordance with her wishes, Doris' body has been donated to science at the University of Miami Medical School.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the cancer or heart foundations of your choice.
      The family is planning a memorial picnic in Acme sometime during warm weather in the summer of 2003, time and place to be announced. Also, there will be a gravestone engraved next to her first husband, "Bill," in the Acme cemetery.
     
      BENZONIA - Veryl Evan Stiles, 82, of Benzonia died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      He was born June 25, 1920, in Honor, the son of Ray and Elizabeth (Sherwood) Stiles. Veryl was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. On Oct. 24, 1947, he married Mary Ann Eddy in Bear Lake.
      Veryl was employed with the Benzie County Road Commission for 35 years, retiring in 1982. In his spare time he enjoyed working outdoors, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
      He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann Stiles of Benzonia; his son, Kim (Lori) Stiles of Elberta, and his three daughters, Faith (Ed) Baughman of Frankfort, Amy Ritchard of Muskegon, and Vena Bair of Frankfort; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Veryl was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Elery Stiles; and his sister, Violet Tezak.
      Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the services on Wednesday.
      The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
     
      LAKE LEELANAU - Jack David Sharnowski, 60, of Lake Leelanau died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Jack was born Jan. 15, 1943, in Roscommon, to Peter Frank and Florence (Kirt) Sharnowski. He was a military veteran and served in the U.S. Army. On Jan. 6, 1967, Jack married Lorraine Joyce LeRuox in Traverse City.
      He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau. Jack was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards.
      Jack is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lorraine Sharnowski of Lake Leelanau; his daughter, Lorrie Marie Bergmann of Howard City; his mother, Florence Sharnowski; his brothers and sisters, August (Barb) Sharnowski, Milford Sharnowski, Mary Lou Kelly, Thomas (Lila) Sharnowski, Ron (Elaine) Sharnowski, Joyce (Bob) Hallead, Jane Anderson, Frank (Brenda) Sharnowski, Ginger Petroskey and Mark (Linda) Sharnowski; two grandchildren, Garrett David Sharnowski and Dannielle Marie Bergmann; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his father; his brother-in-law, Jerry Kelly; and his niece Melody Sharnowski.
      Friends may call today from 3 to 9 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 17, from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. A Wake Service will be held at the funeral home Monday at 7:30 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 18, at noon at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau, with the Rev. Jerry Hunko serving as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society/Leelanau County Chapter, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or to the Leland Fire and Rescue Squad.

      INTERLOCHEN - Paul A. Gilroy, 82, of Interlochen died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Paul was born July 11, 1920, in Brimley, the son of Nelson and Ida Gilroy. On March 16, 1965, he married Violet J. Noggle.
      Paul retired from Michigan State University in 1985, following 21 years of employment. After retiring, he and his wife, Violet, moved to Benzie County. Paul was a member of the Interlochen Eagles and he attended the Inland Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening and going camping where he especially liked tending to the campfire.
      Paul is survived by six stepsons, David J. (Ruth) Knudsen of Honor, Richard (Kady) Knudsen of Lake Ann, Frank Knudsen of Republic, Andrew (Darlene) Knudsen of Thompsonville, George Winters of Ludington, and Dennis (Carolyn) Winters of Scottville; two stepdaughters, Rose Etta (Larry) Dumas of Sault Ste. Marie, and Ida May (Dave) Roe of Pickford; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Cecil Gilroy of Lansing, Robert (Phyllis) Gilroy of St. Johns, and the Rev. Willard (Grace) Gilroy of Battle Creek; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet in 1994; his parents; three sisters, Ellen, Gladys and Martha; and four brothers, Russell, Clarence, Reginald and Edward.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah.
      Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Dan Ingersoll officiating. Interment will be in Inland Township Cemetery in the spring.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Dorothy "Dottie" Buchan, 74, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003.
      She was born in Buckley on Jan. 1, 1929, the daughter of Abel and Sadie (Krueson) Henschell.
      Dottie was employed as a bartender at the U&I Lounge, Brady's, Rathskeller's and Mode's Bum Steer. She had countless friends in Traverse City. She enjoyed watching football, traveling with her sons, boating, golfing and gambling with her friends.
      Dottie is survived by three sons, Tom, Barry (Cindy) and Steve, all of Traverse City; five brothers, William, Donald, Jerry, Leonard and Michael; and two sisters, Melba and Mary.
      She was preceded in death by her parents.
      Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
     
      PATRICIA ANN DEWITT-LOCKARD, 46, of Grand Rapids and formerly of Alden, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, while in Germany.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Chapel of Calvary Church, 777 E. Beltline, Grand Rapids.

      DIANE LEE SCLAFANI, 51, of Traverse City passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.

      CLIFFORD KARL SWARTZ, 66, of Frankfort and formerly of Fenton, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003.
      Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 17, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the Blaine Christian Church with the Rev. Bob Larimer officiating. Visitation will be offered at the church one hour prior to the services on Monday. Interment will be in Blaine Township Cemetery.
