Obituaries

KINGSLEY - Douglas M. Thornton, 76, of Kingsley, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at home in the company of his entire family.
      Formerly of Detroit, Massachusetts, Brazil and West Germany, he had been a resident of Kingsley since 1988. Douglas was a 1942 graduate of the Henry Ford Trade School and served as an electrician in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In June of 1950, he graduated from Lawrence Technical Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering. Douglas became a sales engineer for the Norton Company and had a long and successful career. In 1960, he was made managing director at Norton Company International Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 1964, he was made general manager at Norton Company International in Wesseling, Germany, and in 1970, became director of the Pulp and Paper Division for Norton Company International in Worcester, Mass. Residing in Rochester in 1973, and after 22 years with the Norton Company, Douglas became general manager and a member of the board of directors of Ross Operating Valve in Detroit.
      He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. An avid hunter, Douglas was a purist rather than a trophy hunter, and was well known for his wild game dinners with his family and friends. Douglas was an accomplished woodcarver and enjoyed carving ducks, loons, and turkeys.
      Born Sept. 4, 1926, in Detroit, he was the son of Thomas and Annie (Tait) Thornton. On Oct. 13, 1951, in Worcester, Mass., he married Ruth June Spaunburgh, who preceded him in death on July 1, 1995. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
      Survivors include his three children, Victoria (Robert Baber) Eves-Baber of Greensboro, N.C., Craig (Dawn) Thornton of Hudson, Ohio, and Nancy Thornton of Kingsley; one sister, Sylvia (William) Smillie of Dearborn; four grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.
      Memorial services to celebrate Douglas' life are being planned for Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Kirk in the Hills Church in Bloomfield Hills, where he was a longtime member. Local services are being planned at the Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City on Friday, July 4, 2003, at 10 a.m.
      Inurnment will be in the Kirk in the Hills Church Columbarium in Bloomfield Hills.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to either Munson Hospice, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684 or to the American Cancer Society, 525 W. 14th St., Traverse City, MI 49684.
      The family was assisted locally by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      KALKASKA - Kent Clio Rosenberg, 84, of Kalkaska, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Care - LTC.
      He was born April 8, 1918, in Kalkaska, the son of Clio and Irma (Hauenstein) Rosenberg. Kent was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving our country during World War II. He married Arlene Slocum on Jan. 25, 1947, in Alden.
      A resident of Kalkaska all of his life, Kent was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kalkaska, the NRA and VFW Post #8684. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist.
      Kent is survived by his loving family including his wife of 55 years, Arlene Rosenberg; his daughter, Deanna R. (Chris) Roberts of Kalkaska; his grandchildren, Julie Anne Kadlec of New Port Richie, Fla., Mark (Jennifer Roads) Weiszer of Portage and Katlyn M. Roberts of Oshtemo.
      He was preceded in death by his sister Ruby Lannin; and his dog, Lucky.
      Visitation will be held today from 2 to 5 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at the United Methodist Church of Kalkaska with the Rev. Robert Stark officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be given in behalf of Kent Rosenberg to the United Methodist Church of Kalkaska or K.A.I.R.
      Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
     
      GRAWN - Carl J. Petrowske, 76, of Grawn, died Saturday morning at home surrounded by his family.
      Carl was born on March 19, 1926, in Detroit, the son of Charles E. and Lucy (Gipperich) Petrowske. He later married the former Deloris J. Campbell, who survives.
      Carl served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Later he worked as a foreman for the Dana Corporation, retiring in 1982 following 26 years of service. Carl was a member of TRAMPS. He enjoyed building planes and teaching as a flight instructor.
      He is survived by his loving wife Deloris; his son, David P. (Pam) Petrowske of Chesterfield Township; sisters, Evelyn Waldorf of Greenville and Myrtle Giacoma of Phoenix, Ariz.; his grandchildren, David Petrowske Jr., Dawn M. Schoof, Michael J. Petrowske; great-grandchildren, Kyle T. Schoof, Emyle A. Schoof, Ashley Schoof and Scottie Schoof; dear friends Audry, Ashley and Emile Filarski.
      Carl is preceded in death by his parents; his sister June Schultz; and his son, Michael Petrowske.
      Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of your choice.

      BENZIE COUNTY - After 81 years of a rich full life, William Ellis Orr died peacefully at his daughter's home in Benzie County on Friday, Jan. 3, 2003.
      Ellis was born at Bunny Hollow in Homestead Township on June 22, 1921, the fourth of Bert and Mary Orr's six children. His siblings, Margaret Swain, Lillian Cook, Florence Stone and Gene survive him. His brother, Pete, passed away in 2002.
      Ellis married Bertine Reynolds in 1941, and was a loving husband to her until her death in 1993. Together they raised four children, Mary Jane (Phil) Mix, Harriet (Perry) Jones, Susan (Gary) O'Neill and John Orr. He was "Grandpa" to 11 grandchildren, and "Grandpa Willy" to 19 great-grandchildren. He made his living growing cherries and apples alongside his brother Gene at Twin Orchards in Benzie County until he retired and enjoyed long golden years in Naples, Fla.
      Ellis worked and played hard his whole life. He taught his children to give more than was asked, and not to forget that life was meant to be enjoyed. He leaves in his path a huge gathering of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
      Visitation will be held on today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the McElduff Funeral Chapel in Benzonia.
      A celebration of Ellis' life will be held Monday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Blaine Christian Church.
      Those wishing to give a memorial contribution in Ellis' name may direct their donation to Blaine Church.
     
      SUTTONS BAY - Bertha Kolarik, 85, of Suttons Bay, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      She was born March 10, 1917, in Suttons Bay, to John and Barbara (Hahnenberg) Priest. On Nov. 10, 1936, Bertha married Lawrence Kolarik at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Gills Pier.
      Bertha was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Gills Pier for over 30 years until 1969, when she and Lawrence moved to Suttons Bay. She then became a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Bertha loved to work in her garden, was an avid bingo player, a marvelous cook and a source of joy to those she encountered throughout her life's journey.
      She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Lawrence Kolarik of Suttons Bay; her sons, Gordon (Shiegko) Kolarik, Vernon (Connie) Kolarik and Ray (Anita) Kolarik; her daughters, Margaret Tarsa, Ruth Weinert and Regina (Bob) Livingston; 29 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; her sister, Rita Kiessel; and her brothers, Leonard and Gerald Priest.
      Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, JoAnn in infancy; brothers, Ernest, Gordon, Willard, and a brother in infancy, Emil; sisters, Louise Herman, Ella Herman, Marie Steimel; two sons-in-law, Albin Tarsa and Tom Weinert; and a granddaughter, Lisa Tarsa in infancy.
      Friends and family may call today from 4 to 9 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home where a Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by the praying of the rosary.
      A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay with the Rev. Wayne Dziekan serving as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Mass Intentions or the American Diabetes Association.

      FRANKFORT - Lucelia A. Gabrielsen, 90, of Frankfort, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003.
      She was born on June 23, 1912, in Frankfort, the daughter of Hubert and Emily (Greenwood) Kinne.
      Lucelia was a homemaker and a member of the Frankfort United Methodist Church.
      She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne Gum of Frankfort and Emily (Donald) Stachnik of Traverse City; her sons, Richard Sivertson of Salt Lake City and Chris Gabrielsen of Elberta; 11 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
      Lucelia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Christian Gabrielsen; her son, Joel Sivertson; two sisters; and three brothers.
      Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Frankfort United Methodist Church or the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long-term care.
      The family is being assisted by the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
     
      IRENE M. BLASCZAK, 85, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      No services are planned at this time.

      EARL 'JUNIOR' GUY, 78, of Rapid City, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center - LTC.
      Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Private family services will be held. Burial will be in Clearwater Township Cemetery.

      SOPHIA ZEMSTA LESTER, 80, of Mesick, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Spaulding & Curtin Funeral Home in Ferndale, with an Evening Prayer Service at 8 p.m.
      A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 8, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Oak Park. Interment will follow the Mass in Glen Eden Cemetery in Livonia.
      The family is being served by Spaulding & Curtin Funeral Directors in Ferndale.
     
      BARBARA MAE SWEET, 70, of Kingsley, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the funeral home.
