January 19, 2003ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Jean Margaret Underwood, 85, of Traverse City, passed away Friday at Grand Traverse Pavilions.Jean was born on Aug. 20, 1917, in Homestead Township of Benzie County and was the daughter of Bessie (Fowler) and Floyd Walkley. She was a direct descendant of the first settlers to Homestead. Jean graduated from Benzonia High School in 1936 and went on to study at Benzie County Normal School. She married Donald L. Underwood and together, in keeping with family tradition, they farmed in the area. Jean was a homemaker and for over 20 years was also employed by Consumers Power Company. Jean loved to work in her kitchen, enjoyed knitting and was an excellent seamstress. She made quilts and enjoyed working in her garden. She played the piano, and shared her talent by playing at the Grange each week and for school programs. She and her husband Don would take their little camping trailer to deer camp, where they thoroughly enjoyed deer hunting together. Jean and her husband were also very active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the Masonic Lodge, and Jean served as a Past Worthy Matron in 1956. She and Don worked their way through the chairs of the lodge, enjoying tremendously their years of membership. Jean is survived by her children, Bob (Janet) Underwood, Beverly (Larry) Stephenson, Joanne (Doug) Gallagher and Ron (Anita) Underwood, all of Traverse City, John Underwood of Tampa, Fla., and her stepson, Don (Wanda) Underwood of Wawaka, Ind.; 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; her sister, Freda Marks of Flint; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, on Nov. 7, 1973; by her parents; and by two sisters, Doris Herbert and Fern Baker. Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Sinclair of First Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Visitation will take place today at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Grand Traverse Pavilions. SUNSITES, Ariz. - Allan Crawford Galloway, 78, of Sunsites, Ariz., and formerly Traverse City, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003. He was born in Chicago on Sept. 30, 1924, and grew up in Homewood, Ill. Allan came to Leelanau County in 1935, as a camper. He attended Leelanau Schools and graduated with the class of 1941 as Valedictorian. Allan served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a P-51 fighter pilot and was discharged in 1945, after World War II ended. Allan graduated from Indiana University in 1948 with a bachelor's degree in finance and banking. He joined Galloway Services, a credit clearinghouse for banks and finance companies. In 1952, he married Lucia Harvie of Barrington, R.I. The couple lived in both Park Forest and Olympia Fields, Ill., and had four children, Nancy, Susan, Randy and Elisabeth. Allan was a member of the pioneer Park Forest Planning Commission for three years, and worked with Melvin Jones to charter the Olympia Fields Lions Club. After merging Galloway Service with the forerunner of Trans-Union Credit Bureau, the family moved to Traverse City in 1965 when Allan became vice president of Empire National Bank. After leaving the bank in 1977, he was involved in the formation of the Bay Store in Acme and also invested in Jellystone Camping Resort. In 1982, Allan married Rene Banghart of Interlochen. He joined Dick Smith and Company as an associate broker in 1984. He was a past president of the Cherry Capitol Chorus, a member of SPEBSQSA, former board member of Leelanau Schools, a life member of the American Rhododendron Society, and past president of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Grand Traverse. Allan loved to travel in his motor home and was an avid skier. He and his wife, Rene, have been frequent visitors of Sunsites, Ariz., and became permanent residents in the fall of 2001. KENNETH BARTELL, 85, of Lake Leelanau, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport. No services or visitation are planned at this time. Burial will be in Ohio. Arrangements by Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. LEONA FRANCIS BASCH, 87, of Glen Arbor, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport. Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. BURR L. BROTHERS, 78, of Kalkaska, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003. The date and time of a planned memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska. HENRY SMITH, 86, of Traverse City and formerly of Lansing, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. BEATRICE W. THOMAS, 86, of Kewadin, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. A complete obituary will appear in the Monday edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
