June 8, 2003Letters to the EditorTHOMPSONVILLE - Martha Hilda Chamberlain, 92, of Thompsonville, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at The Maples-Benzie County Medical Care Facility in Frankfort. She was born Feb. 2, 1911, in Musteen, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Minnie (Alden) Zenker.Martha was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star in Honor; and she had worked on the farm her entire life. Martha is survived by her son, Lawrence "Shorty" (Helen) O'Blenis of Thompsonville; three grandchildren, Elaine, Steven and David O'Blenis, all of Massachusetts; a brother, Herbert (Lillian) Zenker of Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her first husband, Roscoe O'Blenis in 1965; her second husband, Victor Chamberlain in 2002; her son, Leonard O'Blenis in 1955; two brothers, Henry Zenker and Fritz Zenker; and a sister, Frieda O'Blenis. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with the Rev. Floyd Soper officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until time of services. Interment will be in Thompsonville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Maples-Benzie County Medical Care Facility. Envelopes are available at Terwilliger Funeral Home. TRAVERSE CITY - Robert LaVerne "Verne" Carless of Traverse City, and formerly of Marine City and Redford Township, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Mr. Carless was born May 9, 1914, in Greenwood Township in St. Clair County, the son of Robert and Edna Middleton Carless. He married Audrey McKay on Sept. 28, 1940, in Detroit. They raised their family in Redford and, upon retirement, enjoyed many years together on the St. Clair River in Marine City. Verne and Audrey enjoyed a warm and loving marriage until her death on Dec. 21, 1988. Mr. Carless was employed as manager of Engineering Administration by the Burroughs Corporation from 1936 until his retirement in 1973. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1942 through 1945. He was a lifelong car enthusiast and loved the outdoors; he particularly enjoyed the water, boating and fishing. Surviving are two daughters, Nancy (Joanne) Carless Davis of Plano, Texas, and Sally Lynn (George) Thompson of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Ashley Lynn, Lauren Elizabeth and Walker Russell Thompson; and a brother, George Victor Carless of Stanwood. His family has chosen to honor the memory of Verne and invite you to attend a service at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Wednesday, June 11, at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will be held immediately before and after the service, at which the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye will officiate. A memorial service will also be held at the Highlander later in June, officiated by the Rev. Becky Chamberlain, and a graveside service will be held at the time of interment in Fargo, Mich. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Mr. Carless' memory to the Hospice House, Munson Medical Center, 1105 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684. ANNETTE CECILIA CAMPBELL, 64, of Rapid City, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 9, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, where friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be in St. Mary of the Woods Cemetery. RICHARD 'DICK' GIDDIS, 63, of Virginia City, Mont., formerly of Lake Ann, died May 12, 2003, in Montana. Memorial services, with military honor guard, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 14, at Almira Township Park on Ole White Drive, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services. WINIFRED E. WILSON, 92, of Lake Villa, Ill., formerly of Traverse City, died May 29, 2003, in Illinois. A memorial service will be held at noon on Thursday, June 12, at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, where friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of service. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
