Obituaries

      ALEXANDER 'ALEX' CHARLES DROW, age 7, of Traverse City, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, surrounded by his family, after a brave battle with leukemia.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      LENORA E. JOHNSON, 79, of Grawn, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      A complete obituary will appear in the Monday edition of the Record-Eagle.
     
      EMMA NIEDERMAYER, 99, of Manistee, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at West Shore Medical Center.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Following the Mass, burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
      Friends may call on Monday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, where an evening prayer service will be at 8 p.m.
     
      A graveside service for LITA HAGEN OLTMAN will take place at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 5, in Leelanau Township Cemetery, Northport. A luncheon will follow at Bethany Lutheran Church, 220 W. Nagonaba St., Northport.
      Lita, a native of Northport, died Dec. 7, 2002, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., at age 73.
     
      DORIS E. THUNSTROM, 87, of Acme, died in Florida on Feb. 13, 2003.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 28, at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City.
     
      WILLIAM EDGAR WINISTORF, 89, of Grayling, died Friday, June 20, 2003.
      Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 23, at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, Grayling. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 7 p.m.
      Burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery, National City.
     
     
      Marshall Everett Hanson Sr.
      Died June 20, 2003
      TORCH LAKE - Retired Air Force Colonel Marshall Everett Hanson Sr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at home on Torch Lake, Friday, June 20, 2003.
      Born Oct. 24, 1916, in Ludington, Marshall was the son of John and Ella (Henning) Hanson. In San Angelo, Texas, on April 8, 1946, he married Frances M. Williams.
      Marshall enlisted in the Michigan National Guard in 1940 to get a year of military service behind him. Then war was declared and he went into Aviation Cadets, graduating as second lieutenant with aeronautical rating of bombardier and navigator. Marshall returned to the United States and completed pilot training, thus making him triple rated as bombardier, navigator and pilot.
      Marshall attended Michigan State University, Cornell University and was a graduate of the Air University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. As a pilot, he received the Purple Heart, the Air Medal 11 times, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and numerous campaign ribbons during World War II. Marshall flew 55 missions in B-17's over targets in Italy, Germany, Austria, Romania, Greece and France; he flew out of Russia for six weeks. Three years was spent with the U.S. Embassy (NATO) in Oslo, Norway, and three years as U.S. Air Force coordinator on the staff of Minnesota's governor. Marshall flew bomber aircraft, transport aircraft and fighter aircraft, including supersonic jets, and he traveled around the world on various staff assignments. Marshall was a base commander for Mount Lemmon Radar Station in Tucson, Ariz., and he retired as colonel in 1962 after 21 years of service.
      In l963, Marshall and Frances moved to the Traverse City area. He worked at the Record-Eagle and owned and operated two motels, the Colonial Inn and the Beach Haus. He was a member of the Torch Lake Protection Alliance, St. Paul Lutheran Church of Kalkaska, a graduate of the Realtor Institute of Michigan through the University of Michigan, a member of the National Institute of Real Estate Brokers, a volunteer for income tax preparation for senior citizens, a member of Reserve Officers Association of the United States, Elk Rapids Golf Club, Three Lakes Association, president of the Traverse City Motel Association for three years, chairman of the Tourist and Resort Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, captain of a UCC drive, an active participant for Red Cross drives, airport expansion and Open Space campaigns and president of the senior high school Booster Club. Marshall was always active and enjoyed life to the fullest.
      Marshall is survived by Frances, his wife of 57 years; his children, Mary M. (Ronald) Neal of Reed City, Marshall E. Hanson Jr. of Traverse City, Barbara (Paul) Lauritzen of Tucson, Ariz. and John Hanson of Bellaire; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Delores Courtney; a brother, Dale Hanson of Grand Rapids; and a special good friend, Daniel Best of Traverse City.
      Preceding Marshall in death were his brothers, Fred, Leonard "Lefty," Ellsworth and Waldo Hanson.
      A memorial service celebrating Marshall's life will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska.

      Melburn W. Lewis
      Died December 31, 2002
      KALKASKA - Melburn W. Lewis, 88, of Kalkaska, passed away at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center-Long Term Care, on Dec. 31, 2002. He was born March 14, 1914, in Kalkaska County, the son of Darwin and Matilda (Hagni) Lewis.
      Mel married Mildred J. Hall on July 4, 1936, in Traverse City, and she preceded him in death on May 13, 1999. He was a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County. Mel and Mildred owned and operated a service station where he was the mechanic until retirement. He was a past mayor and councilman of Kalkaska Village, jury board member, and was on the board of canvassers. Mel was a member of Kalkaska Church of Christ.
      Mel is survived by his children, George (Sonja) Lewis, Dick Lewis and Carol (Herb) Mitchell, all of Kalkaska; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
      There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 28, at the chapel in Evergreen Cemetery.
