June 29, 2003ObituariesEVELYN MAY (BROWN) ADAMS, 71, of Traverse City, died June 4, 2003.A memorial gathering will be held at noon on Tuesday, July 1, at her favorite Boardman River bridge. A luncheon will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Old Mission Tavern. RUBY HAZEL TATUM, 85, of Traverse City, formerly of Tennessee, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2003, at her home. Graveside services will be held at noon on Tuesday, July 1, in Mount Hope Cemetery, Franklin, Tennessee. Local arrangements by Covell Funeral Homes, Traverse City. Edward A. Bantel Died June 22, 2003 NORTHPORT - Edward Albert Bantel, Ed.D., 75, of Northport, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Ed was born June 30, 1927 in Queens, N.Y., the son of Olga (Reif) and Edward Albert Bantel Sr. He was raised in Queens and summered on Long Island. He married Claudia Ann Steward on June 10, 1983, in Birmingham, Mich. Ed was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army, He attended and then taught at Columbia University, taught at Wayne State University and eventually Oakland University, retiring from that position, attaining the title of professor emeritus. Ed loved philosophy and was a professor of philosophy and psychology, attaining the position of full professor at the age of 33. He was involved in Head Start in the 1960s and founded the DEPTH program in Northport. He served on the President's Task Force for Education under President Nixon. A licensed psychologist, Ed was very proud of the fact that he was named a Kentucky Colonel. Survivors include his wife, Claudia; his children and grandchildren, Emily Bantel and Andrew Bantel, both of Northport; Edward A. Bantel and his son, Brian, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Karen (Steve Geiringer) Bantel and their children, Brian, Jeff and David of Ann Arbor; Ellen (Thane) Ostroth and their children, Nicole, Jesse and Jennifer Stevens of Troy; John (Allison) Bantel and their children, Alec and Emma of Rochester; and a brother, Anton (Susan) Bantel of Greensboro, N.C. A time to celebrate Ed's life will take place at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, July 26, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to Columbia University, New York City. Charles L. Berg Died June 26, 2003 TRAVERSE CITY - Charles L. Berg, 74, of Traverse City, entered into everlasting life on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at home. Born March 2, 1929, in Clam River, Antrim County, he was the son of Daniel G. and Lola E. (Rauch) Berg. On March 17, 1956, he married Betty Jane (Squires) Bright, who survives. Chuck attended Bellaire High School and Northwestern Michigan College. He served his country honorably for six years with the United States Air Force, stationed in Washington, D.C. and Tokyo, Japan. Chuck worked for his father, who owned the first boat marina in Clam River and Torch Lake. He also worked at First People State Bank, NBT, and for 27 years with Consumers Power Company. Chuck was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and many organizations, including the Masonic Temple, Lions Club, Knights Templar Lodge #109 where he was high priest, the Shriners, and the United States Power Squadron where he was local commander. He enjoyed boating, playing cards, tennis and golf; for 35 years, he was a member of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club and on the board of directors for a few years. Along with his wife, Betty, Chuck is also survived by his children, Sharon L. (Roger) Bright Evens of Traverse City and Craig E. (Kerrie) Berg of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Shawn (Shannon) Lichty, Melissa (Greg) Raniszewski, Tyler, Rebekah and Kaycie Berg; great-grandchildren, Misty Mackey, Amanda, Chloe and Emma Lichty and Rachel Raniszewski; sister, Winifred "Stick" (William) Robinson; sister-in-law, Phena Squires; brothers-in-law, Norman Galbraith and John Haines; and many nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dennis R. Bright; brother and sister-in-law, Henry "Jack" and Marjorie Berg; sister, Marilyn Haines; brother-in-law, William Squires; sister-in-law, Catherine Galbraith; and stepfather, Clyde Smith. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City today from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial services will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church on Monday, June 30, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jeremy Williams officiating. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to the Traverse City Fire Department, Asbury United Methodist Church or Munson Hospice. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Evelyn M. Parr Died June 27, 2003 TRAVERSE CITY - Evelyn M. Parr, 93, of Traverse City, passed away Friday, June 27, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. She was born July 5, 1909. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Carol J. (Jan R.) Hale of Traverse City; two grandsons, David D. Hale of Houghton and Matthew J. Hale of Traverse City; and a brother, Richard Gillson of Texas. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Ward K. Parr; a son, David Parr; a sister, Geraldine Beechler; and three brothers, Ellsworth, Robert and Walter Gillson. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Evelyn's life will take place at a later date. The family wishes to thank Evelyn's caregivers at Grand Traverse Pavilions for their loving kindness to our Mom and Grandmother.
