March 2, 2003ObituariesOLIVER J. FORTIN, 90, of Traverse City, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. TRAVERSE CITY - Virginia Thompson Sweeney, 84, of Traverse City, died Friday evening, Feb. 28, 2003, at home. Born March 4, 1918, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Carlos W. and Irene (Edy) Shotwell. Ginny was a descendant of one of the earliest settlers on Clam Lake and summered there for many years. She moved to Traverse City from Portland, Ore., in 1998. A homemaker, Ginny was an artist, a nature lover, enjoyed cooking and her family, and was lovingly called "the campfire queen." Ginny is survived by two daughters, Pamela Hawley of Farmington Hills and Megan (Peter) Raphael of Traverse City; a sister, Elaine Packard of Detroit; five grandchildren, Patrick Hawley, Robin (Daniel Blue) Hawley, Mindy Hawley, Ryan Raphael and Alexandra Raphael; and a great-grandson, Finnigan Hawley Blue. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her former husband, Kenneth Thompson. Private family services will take place Tuesday, March 4, with a memorial service planned for the spring on Clam Lake. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Bellaire. Memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice, 1105 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684-2386. Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - Julia M. Wyatt, of Traverse City, died Feb. 27, 2003, in Munising. She was born April 22, 1918, in Antrim County, the daughter of Frank and Myrtle (Wood) Walters. Julia graduated from Traverse City Central High School in 1936. On June 5, 1937, she married James M. "Jim" Wyatt. When Julia began her working career as a secretary for Traverse City Central High School, she was the first married woman to be employed in that position, which she held for four years. She then worked as a secretary for Mark Osterlin, M.D. at the Rheumatic Fever Clinic, as a receptionist-bookkeeper for Mark Osterlin, M.D. and William Edmonds, M.D., and as a transcriptionist for Munson's radiology department. From age 65 until her retirement at age 76, she was a receptionist for the Grand Traverse County Health Department and considered her co-workers her second family. She was a volunteer at the Senior Center of Traverse City, enjoyed water aerobics and was an avid reader. She was a member of Fourteenth Street Methodist Church and Central United Methodist Church. Julia was preceded in death by her husband, James Wyatt, in 1960. She is survived by three children, Sheila K. Young of Honolulu, Hawaii, John H. (Mary) Wyatt of Paw Paw and Donald J. (Kandee) Wyatt of Munising; seven grandchildren, Milo Young, James Young, Josh Wyatt, Brennan Wyatt, Kimberly Hale, Derrick Wyatt and Denise Wyatt; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, March 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held Tuesday, March 4, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Larry Ross officiating. Memorial donations may be directed to the Senior Center of Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - John Henry Salow, 68, of Traverse City, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, in Antigua, Guatemala. John graduated from Pontiac High School in 1952. He also attended and graduated from Alma College. John is a military veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was retired from a career in the insurance industry, having been employed as a field agent for both Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Massachusetts Mutual. John was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. He was also a member of the Elk Rapids Rotary Club and served as a volunteer at Munson Medical Center. John enjoyed boating and had traveled the world. John was the beloved father of John H. Salow Jr. of California and Sue (Mark) Smith of Waterford; loving grandfather of Mark and Joe; and dear brother of Ronald (Elaine) Salow of Novi. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews; and many dear friends made through the years and through his travels. TRAVERSE CITY - Helen Marie Ronan, 86, of Traverse City, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Helen was born in Akron, Mich. on July 22, 1916, the daughter of Louis and Pauline (Sweet) Kotenko. On June 28, 1941, she married Russell P. Ronan at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Saginaw. He preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1985. A member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Helen enjoyed singing in the church choir. Survivors include her daughters, Ruth (Richard) Graves of Prescott, Ariz., Gail (David) Jodway of Suttons Bay, Beverly (Gerald) Bacon of Wyoming, Mich., and sons, David Patrick Ronan of Kingsley, Patrick (Lu) Ronan of Berwyn, Ill., and Kevin Ronan; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sisters, Mary Harrell of St. Petersburg, Fla., Pauline Hegenauer of Tampa, Fla., and Patricia Kotenko of Saginaw, and a brother, Joseph Kotenko, also of Saginaw. In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; by a sister, Anna Zaytson and a brother, John Kotenko. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Patrick Maher serving as celebrant. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Francis Catholic Church. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. TRAVERSE CITY - Glen P. "Pat" Robinson, 83, of Traverse City, died Tuesday morning at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born Aug. 27, 1919, in Traverse City, he was the son of Arthur and Flora (Fredrickson) Robinson. Pat graduated from Traverse City High School in 1938. He served his country honorably during World War II with the U.S. Navy Seabees. On June 6, 1944, Pat was a participant in the invasion on Omaha Beach during the D-day landing. On Aug. 31, 1968, he married the former Anne Elizabeth Linsley, in Traverse City. Pat and his wife always enjoyed their winters in Surprise, Ariz. Pat had been employed as an electrical contractor for Robinson Electric for 14 years, built and owned Meadowlane Village, and retired from Cherryland Electric Co-op after 18 years of service. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Traverse City, where he was a trustee and deacon. Pat was on the Church Side Village Board, and a member of the Traverse City Rotary Club for 30 years. He was also a member of the Traverse City Jaycees, the Traverse City Masonic Lodge #222 F & AM, Saladin Temple Shrine, as well as a member of the Cherry Festival Board for 25 years. Along with his wife, Anne, Pat is survived by his children, Carroline K. (Allan) Durbin of Tucson, Ariz., Judith M. (Ralph) Heller of Waipio, Hawaii, and Glen P. Robinson Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii; his five grandchildren, Mary Pat (William) Compagnari, Steven (Kathy) Stechschulte, Amy Lerew, Todd (Kris) Heller, and Ty Heller; five great-grandchildren; and his two brothers, Ben Robinson of Acme, and Lawrence Robinson of Traverse City. Pat was preceded in death by his parents; and sister-in-law, Eva Robinson. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City on Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue will officiate. Burial will be in the First Congregational Church's Garden of Remembrance. TRAVERSE CITY - Victor D. Kaercher, 81, of Traverse City, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Born Oct. 19, 1921, in Yale, he was the son of Stanley and Zola (Harrison) Kaercher. On Oct. 6, 1946, he married his childhood sweetheart, Betty Teter. Victor served his country in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in Germany, Italy and France. He remembered vividly and was greatly impacted by his role in the liberation of the deceased from the concentration camps during his tour of duty. Victor moved to Traverse City in 1970 where he enjoyed gardening, ice fishing, hunting, roller-skating, and working at his church, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Survivors include his children, Robert Kaercher of Williamsburg and Sandra Schrader of Traverse City; brother, Vance (Betty) Kaercher of Texas; sister, Zenna Marie (Bill) Campbell of Missouri; grandchildren, Anne Marie (Rich) Miller, Michelle (Michael) Autry, Tina Marie Kaercher, Robert (Melissa) Schrader, Tammy (Brad) Newstead and Michael Schrader; great-grandchildren, Shawn Mehler, Chrystal Leeanne Miller, Nicholas Mehler, Jackline Miller, Chelsea Marie Newstead and Jacob Newstead. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse Commission On Aging. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
