Obituaries

FIFE LAKE - Miriam R. Smith, 73, of Fife Lake, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2003, at her home surrounded by her family.
      She was born on May 7, 1929, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Beldon and Ruth (Dwinell) McLaughlin. Miriam married Harold F. Smith on May 29, 1948, in Grand Rapids.
      She retired from Traverse City State Hospital in 1985 after 20 years of service. Miriam enjoyed her family, bowling and loved to travel. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church of Fife Lake for 40 years, and a member of the American Legion Lady Auxiliary Post 219 of Fife Lake.
      Miriam is survived by her loving family, including her husband of 54 years, Harold; her children, Michael R. (Debbie) Smith of Atlanta, Ga., John M. (Julie) Smith of Fife Lake, William H. (Lori) Smith of Traverse City and Janet A. (Kenneth) Hall of Interlochen; eight grandchildren; her brother, James B. McLaughlin of East Tawas; her sister-in-law, Marilou McLaughlin of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
      Miriam was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol L. Smith, in 1954; and her brother, John D. McLaughlin.
      Visitation will be Sunday, March 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated on Monday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Fife Lake with the Rev. Patrick Maher officiating. Interment will be in Garfield Township Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be given in behalf of Miriam Smith to Munson Hospice.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Karen F. Remai, 40, of Traverse City, died suddenly Friday afternoon, March 7, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Born April 15, 1962, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Robert and Jane (Haywood) Boomer. On June 19, 1982, in Traverse City, she married Bruce A. Remai.
      Karen had been employed in the real estate business for many years, most recently for Century 21 Pearson/Cook. She was revered in her professional, personal and social worlds. Karen was loved and admired for her abundant sense of humor, enthusiastic disposition and overall zest for life.
      Karen spent her early summer years working on the family farm, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Long Lake. Her hobbies included gardening, remodeling older homes and walking in the woods.
      Karen lived her life for her family. She dearly adored and was deeply devoted to her husband, Bruce, and her daughter, Kendra, as well as her extended family.
      Along with her husband and daughter, she is also survived by her parents, Robert and Jane Boomer of Empire; a sister, Connie Woodcock of Traverse City; two brothers, John (Mary Jane) Boomer of Empire and Cliff (Elizabeth) Boomer of Traverse City; and one niece and two nephews.
      Wherever Karen was, there was a lot of laughter and good times. She will be greatly missed by all that were fortunate enough to be touched by her life.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday, March 10, from 12 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bradley Will officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of one's choice.
      A message from Karen's father. "Dear Karen: You were honest and strong, and willing to bear any burden; independent, thoughtful, and always an anchor of common sense. You were a devoted, loving wife and mother, a beloved sister and daughter. You will be remembered forever."
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Charles Albert Parker, 83, of Traverse City and formerly of Elk Rapids, Waterford and Florida, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Charles was born March 30, 1919, in Detroit, the son of Dad and Ethel Parker. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army in France, Germany and Belgium and took part in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Charles married Clara L. (Jennett) Powell on March 22, 1997, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Traverse City.
      He owned and operated a trucking business and later became a deputy sheriff for the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. Charles retired in 1978 with 23 years of service. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Traverse City.
      Charles was an avid golfer and also enjoyed photography, making his own photographic slides. He also enjoyed boating and traveling throughout the United States, visiting all of the continental states.
      Charles is survived by his wife, Clara Parker of Traverse City; his two sons, David (Marsha) Parker of Macomb and Steven (Sharon) Parker of Waterford; his two stepsons, Randy (Tari) Powell of Traverse City and Jon (Jo-Lee) Powell of Interlochen; four stepdaughters, Nancy (Jeffery) Hubert, Sheryl Powell of Copemish and her fiancé, John Dunham, Judith (Dan) Guith of Interlochen and Karen (Colin) Husband of Hubert, N.C.; grandchildren, Dawn (Russ) Schultz, Lisa (Joe) Johnston, Ronald (Shannon) Cummin Jr. and Julee Cortese; great-grandchildren, Kailey Johnston and Andrew Schultz; and many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cora Fern Parker; his parents; and his sister, Marion Zormeier.
      Funeral services will be held today at 12:30 p.m. at the Lewis E. Wint & Son Funeral Home in Clarkston. Interment will be in White Chapel Cemetery.
      A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to either the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, or to Asbury United Methodist Church.
     
      BELLAIRE - Doris M. Austin, 84, of Bellaire, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Charlevoix Area Hospital.
      Born May 5, 1918, in Bellaire, Doris was the daughter of Clyde and Hazel (Goodman) Dewey. She was a graduate of Bellaire public schools and lived most of her life in the Bellaire area. On Jan. 22, 1937, Doris married William "Buck" Austin, who died Jan. 27, 2002.
      Doris was primarily a homemaker except for about three years when she worked at International Telephone & Telegraph in Bellaire. Doris enjoyed traveling, cooking, loved her cats and especially her new dog. She was a member of the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church.
      Surviving are four sons, Donald (Sue), Larry (Glennis), and Richard (Carol), all of Bellaire, and William (Anna), of Ellsworth; a daughter, Charlene Austin of Bellaire; a brother, Robert (Anna) Dewey of Marquette; a sister, Frances (Paul) Ruskin of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one niece and three nephews.
      In addition to her husband, Doris was also preceded in death by her parents; and her 14-year-old brother, Billy, who fell through the ice on Clam Lake and drowned.
      Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with Jean Thornell officiating.
      Burial will be in the spring in Lakeview Cemetery, Bellaire.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
     
      LIVONIA - Anna R. Anderson, 88, of Livonia, died March 7, 2003. She was born in Traverse City on Oct. 15, 1914, and was a resident until 1959.
      Loving mother of Lorne (Cindy) Ritola, Dean (Sharon) Ritola and Kenneth (Pamela) Ritola. Sister of Dorothy Chidister, Marion Conway, Katherine Kik and Ernestine; dear grandmother of four and great-grandmother of four.
      Visitation will be at the R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home, 15451 Farmington Road, Livonia, on Tuesday, March 11, from 1 to 9 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, March 12, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 39090 Five Mile Road, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at 10:30 a.m.
      Memorials may be made to Angela Hospice.
