March 11, 2003ObituariesELK RAPIDS - Jerry B. "Uncle Jer" Webb, 55, of Elk Rapids, died Saturday, March 8, 2003.He was born in St. Charles, Mo., on May 23, 1947, the son of Denny S. and Mildred (Whitaker) Webb. Jerry was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the AMVETS Post #114 in Elk Rapids. He enjoyed fishing. Jerry is survived by his mother, Mildred Webb of Elk Rapids; brothers, Henry (Elizabeth) Webb and Denny (Phyllis) Webb; sister, Pat Webb; nieces, Colleen, Melissa (Paul) and Lauren; nephews, Matt, Andy, Jack, Jody, Ian, Dustin and Alec; and son, Jerry Bill Webb Jr. He was preceded in death by his father. Cremation has taken place. Graveside memorial services will be announced in the spring. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. CEDAR - Donald C. Owens II, 77, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Bortz Health Care. Don was born March 16, 1925, in Traverse City, the son of Beatrice (Haise) and Donald C. Owens. Don was a lifelong resident of Traverse City. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served in World War II. While in the service Don married his high school sweetheart, the former Virginia E. DeTour on October 21, 1943, in Biloxi, Miss. Following the war, he returned to complete his education, and graduated from Traverse City High School. Employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Co. for 36 years, Don was a life member and past commander of Cherryland VFW Post #2780. Don was instrumental in having Rennie Street re-named to Veterans Drive, and served as a Boy Scout leader for 10 years, accomplishments of which he was very proud. He enjoyed sailing and had a great love for the bay. There was never a sunset that Don didn't enjoy. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dogs, and raising and riding quarter horses. Survivors include his wife, Virginia; his children, Donald C. (Mary) Owens III, Craig (Linda) Owens, Criss (Gary) Hartenbach and Jim (Kris) Owens, all of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Dan, Melissa, Steve, Angie, Nicki, Jeff, Josh, Scott and Craig; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Maxine Polmateer. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 12, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 13, at Christ The King Catholic Church in Acme, with the Rev. Father Garth Hilmer serving as celebrant. Military rites will be provided by the Honor Guard of Cherryland VFW Post #2780. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. Babula, 86, of Williamsburg, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born on February 25, 1917, in Detroit, the daughter of Samuel and Diane (Dudek) Wasiluicz. Olga married Francis Babula in 1941 in Detroit. Olga was employed by Michigan Bell for 20 years. She and Francis moved from Birmingham to Williamsburg, where they lived for 25 years. She enjoyed fishing and gardening. Olga is survived by her nieces, Patricia (Joseph) Ingrao of Macomb and Barbara (Daniel) McKernan of Utica, N.Y.; her grandnieces, Patricia Paradee, Susan Demeny, Joanne Ingrao and Barbara McKernan; her grandnephew, Jim McKernan; one great-grandniece and three great-grandnephews. Olga was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, and her sisters, Helen C. Campbell and Ann Morehead. Visitation will take place today, March 11, from 1 p.m. until the funeral service at 4 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Interment will be in St. Mary of the Woods Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home. Dr. Edward J. Hayes Died March 3, 2003 COOKEVILLE - Tenn. - Dr. Edward J. Hayes of Cookeville, Tenn., died Monday, March 3, 2003, at Bethesda Health Care Center in Cookeville. He was born on Aug. 11, 1922, in River Rouge, to the late John Victor and Lucille Welton Hayes. Dr. Hayes was a retired chief psychologist at Plateau Mental Health Center in Cookeville, and formerly served as chief psychologist at Traverse City State Hospital. He was a former professor of psychology at Purdue University in Indiana, and at Ferris State University in Big Rapids. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rose Marie Hayes; four sons, Brian J. Hayes of San Francisco, Kevin and Cindy Hayes, Keith Hayes and Lisa Monson, all of Traverse City; and Bruce and Sue Hayes of Bostic, N.C.; three daughters, Kathleen Hayes of Traverse City, Patrice and Mark Gilliam of Cookeville, and Karen Hayes of Louisville, Ky.; two brothers, Arthur Hayes of Allen Park and Kenneth Hayes of Trenton; four grandchildren, Helenna, Brooke, Justin and Kelsey Hayes; and a great-grandson, Talian Hayes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathryn Adolfo; and a brother, Patrick Hayes. Cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass will be held on May 24, 2003, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Trenton. Memorial donations may be made to the Father Fred Foundation, or to the research division of the American Cancer Society. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Kimberly Kay (Kulawiak) Wendels, 36, of Newport News, Va., passed away at home on Dec. 25, 2002, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Kim was born Aug. 26, 1966, in Manistee. She attended school at Benzie Central. On March 17, 1986, she met John Leo Wendels. They were married in Leland on Oct. 19, 1990. Kim was an excellent interior decorator. She loved gardening, online trading/collecting and cooking big meals for her family and friends. Kim was a devoted wife and a loving mother. Her family was everything to her. Watching her children open their gifts on Christmas Day 2002 was her final wish. Her love for her children made that wish come true. Kim passed away peacefully Christmas evening. Kim is survived by her husband, John Leo, daughter, Samantha Renee, 13, and son, Keenan Lee, 9, all of Newport News, Va.; her mother, Judith Kulawiak of Onekama; and brother, Todd Kulawiak of Thompsonville. A family memorial will be held at a later time. MACOMB TOWNSHIP - Sharron Ann Conner, of Macomb Township and formerly of Traverse City, died Thursday, Feb. 27, at her residence. She was 56. Sharron was born Jan. 30, 1947, in Detroit, a daughter of Walter and Veronica (Manley) Salens. On June 10, 1989, Sharron married Richard James Conner in Traverse City. She was employed as a hospital X-ray technician/ultrasonographer. She enjoyed her grandchildren and quilting. Surviving are her husband, Richard; children, Jennifer Ann Richmond of Traverse City, Amy Marie (Michael) Wallace of Macomb Township, Brian Roger Richmond of Traverse City, Christine Marie (Kevin) Moeller of Novi, Julie Renee (Tad) Balanda of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Amy Lynn Conner of Novi; brothers, Waller (Tami) Salens of Bad Axe and John (Meredith) Salens of Novi; sisters, Patricia (Randy) Roberson of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Theresa (Michael) Hartsig of Wyoming and Barbara (Tim) Stiers of Harrison Township; and 11 grandchildren. A Funeral Mass was held Monday, March 3, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Shelby Township. Sharron is interred in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township. Memorial tributes may be made to the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Arrangements were handled by the Murphy and Hauss Funeral Directors, Macomb Township. DEATHS       GEORGE W. HUGHEY, 94, of Atwood, formerly of Mancelona and Rochester, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at the Life Care Center in Punta Gorda, Fla. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 13, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 14, at the Antrim Church of Christ in Mancelona. Dorothea Opal Groth Died March 9, 2003 DELTA, Ohio - Dorothea Opal Groth, 77, of Delta, Ohio, passed away Sunday at Harborside of Swanton, Ohio. She was born on March 26, 1925, in Fayette, Ohio, to Verne and Pearl (Leu) Saunders. She married Robert R. Groth on July 8, 1948, and he preceded her in death in August of 1990. Dort graduated from Valparaiso University and earned her master's degree in education at Bowling Green State University. She retired from the Fulton County Board of Education in 1986. She was an active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Maumee, Ohio, where she directed the chime choir. She is survived by her children, Jacqueline (Peter) Craig of Front Royal Va., Patricia (Neil) Sebring of Delta, Ohio, and Paul Groth of Midland; grandchildren, Amanda and Robert Sebring and Caroline Craig; sisters, Eleanor Shafter of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Joan (Jack) Silcox; sisters-in-law, Elaine Saunders of Delta, Ohio, and Marge Groth of Swanton, Ohio; four nephews and five nieces; cousins and many friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; brother, Verlin Saunders; and a nephew. Friends may call at the Grisier Funeral Home in Delta, today, March 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 12, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 2250 S. Holland-Sylvania Road in Maumee. Pastor Jeffrey Mittelstadt will officiate. Interment will follow in the St. James Cemetery in Pettisville, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothea's name to Resurrection Lutheran Church.
