March 16, 2003ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Louis Ronald Matta, 60, of Traverse City, known to most as "Ron," died Saturday, March 15, 2003 at Munson Medical Center.Ron was born in Detroit on Sept. 29, 1942, the son of Marion (Nahas) and Louis Joseph Matta. He was raised in the Detroit area and then lived in Kingman, Ariz. prior to moving to Traverse City a few years ago. Prior to his illness, Ron had been a service manager for automotive dealerships. He loved to fish, boat and play cards. He especially loved cooking, his specialty being Middle Eastern foods. He also enjoyed watching movies. Ron is survived by his wife, the former Gaye L. Bobier, who he married May 25, 2002; his stepson, Scott and his wife, Kandace Gibson, and a stepgrandson, Andrew, all of Davenport, Iowa; his brothers, Peter Matta of Fenton, and Lawrence and his wife, Maureen Matta of Clarkston. Also surviving are his aunts, uncles and many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Kim Matta-Jackson of Orlando, Fla.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his former wife, Ruth; by his parents; and by his stepson, Kenny. To celebrate Ron's life, an Arabic Feast will be held in his honor at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City. Royal Dr., Traverse City, MI 49684 TRAVERSE CITY - Edward Robert Hoos, 84, of Traverse City, passed away on Friday morning, March 14, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born Oct. 23, 1918, in Applegate, Ed was the youngest child of the Revs. Thomas and Carrie Krumpen Hoos. Ed joined the United States Army Air Force in 1942 and served as radar repairman stationed on Guam, attaining the rank of Master Sgt. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Michigan University and did doctoral work at Wayne State University. Ed was a schoolteacher, administrator and, for 17 years, a school psychologist with Macomb Intermediate School District before retiring in 1988. He devoted much of his life to working with infants and children with emotional and physical disabilities. Ed was a member of the Michigan Federation of Teachers, serving his local as president. After his retirement, he was active in the Retired School Personnel Association in Battle Creek and Traverse City. Ed always strove to give his best to both the children he served and the team of educators with whom he worked. He also held membership in the American Orthopsychiatric Association. Longtime residents of Battle Creek, Ed and his wife Bette moved to Leelanau County in 1992. Ed enjoyed his retirement years, at last finding time for bear and deer hunting and fishing the waters of Leelanau County. He was devoted to his family and led by the example of his strong yet quiet faith. He will be remembered for his gentle kindness as well as his righteous indignation at all injustices. Ed was a peacemaker who accepted people for who they were and encouraged all to be their best. Even through the fog of dementia, he continued to touch the lives of his family and those who cared for him until the very end. Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bette (Atkinson) Hoos; sons, Roger (Nona) of Clinton Twp. and Ed of Guerneville, Calif.; daughters, Christine of Maple City and Connie (John) May of Blanchard; as well as his other very special children, Jill Yaple of Maple City and Jim Clark of Guerneville, Calif. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kari and Traci Hoos of Clinton Twp., and Jennie, John Jr., Wesley, April and David May; and his beloved aunt, Ruth Stewart of Walworth, Wis. Preceding Ed in death were his parents; his sons, Wendell and Gordon; his two brothers, Charles and John; and his sister, Elizabeth. A private family service and burial will take place, followed by a memorial celebration of Ed's life, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church at 402 W. Ninth St. in Traverse City on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that memorials be directed to the Grand Traverse Area Retired Schools Scholarship Fund, or to the Grand Traverse Pavilions Ambassador Club. The family was served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. June Stoner Carlson, 83, of Northport, died Thursday afternoon, March 13, 2003 at Maple Valley Nursing Home. She was born July 18, 1919 in Courtland Township, Kent County, the daughter of Jay and Agnes (Cuddington) Stoner. June attended Courtland Methodist Church. After three years of high school in Rockford, she graduated from East Grand Rapids High School in 1936. It was while attending Lake Drive Baptist Church that June satisfied a longing to have Christ in her life and heart. June joined the U.S. Navy, serving for two and one-half years. She graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., in the field of photography. June was married in 1950 and had two children, Eric and Karin Heline. She worked as a cook at Meijer's office cafeteria in Grand Rapids for several years before marrying Rudolph Carlson on Aug. 9, 1980, in Grand Rapids, and who preceded her in death in 1995. A member of Grand Rapids Covenant Church for 40 years, she had recently transferred to Northport Evangelical Covenant Church. June enjoyed woodworking, propagating wildflowers, photography and genealogy. She is survived by her children, Eric Heline of Lake Leelanau, and Karin Kalchik of Northport; grandchildren, Jennifer, Heather and Jeffery Kalchik, all of Northport; and Craig Latham of Lansing; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Stoner of Holland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl Carlson, Oscar (Marian) Carlson, Gladys Ahlberg and Ethel VanderBurg, all of Grand Rapids. Also surviving June are stepchildren, Don (Lois) Carlson and Jay (Dottie) Craker of Northport; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 17 at Northport Evangelical Covenant Church, where friends may call at noon until time of services. Interment will be in Maple Grove Township Cemetery. DOROTHY MARIE HORENBURG, of Wellston, died Friday, March 14, at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac. She was born July 5, 1910, in Detroit. A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Irons. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday, March 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a reciting of the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be in Fernwood Cemetery. DELTA TOWNSHIP - Former Traverse City resident Jack Lippert, 75, passed on March 11, 2003. Born April 30, 1927 in Seville Township, he was the son of Lloyd Leroy Lippert and Leafa Margaret (Fuller) Lippert. Jack was a member of Community of Christ Church and served his country for 37 years in the U.S. Army during World War II, with the Army of the occupation in Italy, and with a career in the Army National Guard. He retired in 1982 after serving as camp commander of Camp Grayling, a Michigan National Guard training base. He served or was a member of the Oneida Township Zoning Board, Traverse City Boy Scout Council, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Traverse City Rotary. He was given the Rotary Fellows award. Jack is survived by his wife, Marvel Lippert of Delta Township; children, Karen (Rick) Combs of Columbia, Tenn., Kevin (Theresa) Lippert of Grand Ledge; four grandchildren, Angela Combs and Joshua Combs of Columbia, Tenn., and Adam Lippert and Holly Lippert of Grand Ledge. Also surviving are two brothers and five sisters and their spouses, and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, two sisters and three brothers-in-law. INTERLOCHEN - Edwin Alfred Summerfield, 85, of Interlochen, died Friday, March 14, 2003 at Birchwood Nursing Center in Traverse City. He was born Oct. 10, 1917, in Brampton, the son of Chester and Nellie (Poullioutt) Summerfield. Edwin served in the U.S. Army Air Force Medical Corps during World War II. In 1980, Edwin retired as equipment operator from L.W. Edison Co. in Grand Rapids. He was a member of the Bendon Recreation Club and a life member of the Old Engine Club in Buckley. Edwin loved horses and enjoyed rodeos, carving leather and gardening. He also enjoyed helping at Camp Chenaniah in Honor. On April 28, 1940, in Beulah, Edwin married Josephine E. Ranes, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughter, Josephine (Ronald) Wiggins of Interlochen; a granddaughter, Rebecca Jo (Jeffrey) Blausey of Interlochen; a great-granddaughter, Julionna Marie Blausey of Interlochen; a brother, Robert (Margaret) Summerfield of Florida; three sisters, Mabel (Allen) Little of Elberta, Marion Lhamon of Buckley and Mildred Little of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Ronald D. Wiggins; five brothers, Clinton, Merton, Charles, George and Raymond Summerfield; and his sister, Margaret Felzke. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18 at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with Pastor Marshall Collins and Pastor Donald McCash officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Camp Chenaniah Water Well Fund, Honor, Mich. Envelopes are available at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home. MANCELONA - Ruth Wilcox, 76, of Mancelona, died Saturday, March 15, 2003 at home. She was born Dec. 15, 1926 in Ligon, Ky., the daughter of Darky Reynolds. Ruth was a longtime resident of Ashland, Ky. before moving to Mancelona in 1948. Ruth was employed as a waitress for many years and owned and operated the Coffee Shop Restaurant in Mancelona for 12 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends in the area. She also enjoyed collecting Elvis Presley memorabilia, garage sales, and going to Avery's Restaurant in Mancelona. On April 17, 1947, in Boyd County, Ky., Ruth married Earl Wilcox, who preceded her in death on May 6, 1988. Also preceding her in death were her parents. Ruth is survived by four children, Tom (Lynn) Wilcox, Robert (Jeanne) Wilcox, Collette (Robert) Leusby and Annette (Rob) Choate, all of Mancelona. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, 18 nieces and nephews; a sister, Ruby Hudson of Detroit, and many friends. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at 1 p.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Pastor Ray Roach will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 17 at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona. Memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice.
