Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 8 p.m. KATHERINE ROSE COOK, 49, of Wellston, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 19, at First Church of Wellston. Cremation took place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee. The Oak Grove Cremation Center is serving the family. JAMES R. HARRAND, 66 of Grawn, died at home on Saturday, May 17, 2003. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. ISABELLA IONE KYSER, 79, of Traverse City, formerly of Maple City, died Sunday morning, May 4, 2003. Isabella will be remembered during a memorial service to be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, in the chapel of Central United Methodist Church. The Rev. Steven Wing will officiate. OVERLA, 67, of Thompsonville, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Memorial services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 24, at Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with Pastor Greg Culver officiating. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. AMY L. PERKINS, 59, of Zeeland, formerly of Kingsley, died Friday, May 16, 2003. Visitation will be Monday, May 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Lakeshore Memorial Services in Holland, and will continue on Tuesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Zeeland, where services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Union City. Arrangements by Lakeshore Memorial Services in Holland. HUDSON, Fla. - Ralph F. Conant, 88, of Hudson, Fla., died April 20, 2003. Born Dec. 14, 1914, in Yuba, he was the son of Albert and Annabell (Weathers) Conant. On Nov. 23, 1935, at Barker Creek in Williamsburg, he married Lucille D. Pelky, who preceded him in death. Mr. Conant was a cherry farmer and tool and die maker. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church Men's Club of Elk Rapids, and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing. After the death of his first wife, Ralph married Verness Dean in November 1981, and she also preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons, Ralph "Bill" (Mariann) Conant of Bay City, and Thomas Conant of Hudson, Fla.; two daughters, Patricia Sullivan and Nancy Conant, both of New Hudson, Fla.; two brothers, LeRoy (Elsie) Conant and Albert (Terry) Conant; two sisters, Jane (Versil) White and Margaret (Bob) Madroo; 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is Patrick Comrie, who lived with the family for several years. In addition to both wives, Mr. Conant was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Joan. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. The Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski will serve as celebrant. Interment will be in Yuba Cemetery. The family asks those wishing to give memorials to please remember Hospice or Sacred Heart Catholic Church building fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. FRANKFORT - William Harmon Bedford, 88, died early Friday morning, May 16, at his home in Frankfort. Born July 18, 1914, in Frankfort, he was the son of Alvin "Ollie" Bedford and Hazel Harmon Bedford. Bill's grandfather, Edwin Bedford, was a captain of the lifesaving station located at Point Betsie in the late 1800s. And his grandparents, A.B. and Dora Harmon, owned the general store in Frankfort (presently occupied by Olsen-Sayles). Bill and his family resided in Frankfort until 1923 when they moved to Ann Arbor, where Ollie worked for the Ann Arbor Railroad. He later attended Eastern Michigan University, graduating with a degree in education. Bill was employed by Ypsilanti public schools for 35 years, teaching manual arts, wood shop and technical drawing, until his retirement in 1975. On Nov. 3, 1930, Bill Married Helen Jean Mowrer of Ypsilanti, where they resided for 45 years. Bill joined the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After the war, Bill started a marina, B&B Sports Center, on Higgins Lake; to this day, the family-oriented business continues to grow and prosper. His interests included soaring, fishing, antique collecting, engine and mechanical repair, gardening and bird watching. Bill's greatest joy was the time he spent on his island in McGregor Bay, Canada, where he had many friends. Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen; a daughter, Claudia (Pete) Lewis of Frankfort; two sons, Bill (Patricia) Bedford of Grayling, and Tom (Fleur) Bedford of Higgins Lake; a sister, Dora Bedford of Frankfort; two brothers, Bob Bedford of Memphis, Tenn., and John Richard "Dick" Bedford of Artesia, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be directed to Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort. The Oak Grove Cremation Center is serving the family. TRAVERSE CITY - Lee L. Anderson, 85, of Traverse City, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at the Inverness assisted living facility in Traverse City. He was born March 16, 1918, in Grand Rapids, the son of Roy and Agnes (Teal) Anderson. Lee had been an automotive engineer for 40 years, working in body systems engineering for Chrysler Corporation and Ford Motor Company until his retirement in 1980. He served as a naval aviation maintenance officer during World War II. Lee wed Gertrude "Trudy" Manthei in 1944, and they shared 58 years of devoted Christian marriage. Lee and Trudy maintained a second home on Torch Lake for many years, but retired to Sanford, N.C. in 1982. They returned to Michigan in 2001. Lee was an enthusiastic golfer, church choir member, dinghy sailor and classic car fancier. Lee is survived by his wife, Trudy; his daughter, Jackie (Steve Lauer) of Traverse City; his son, Larry (Debbie) of Washington, D.C.; and grandchildren, Teal, Peter and Kelsey. Lee's brother, the Rev. Frank (Win) Anderson of Lansing survives. Two brothers, Ralph and Emmett, and a sister, Laura, preceded him in death; their spouses, Eleanor, Fran and Clyde, respectively, live on. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 19, at 1 p.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City, followed by a memorial service at that location beginning at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, to Munson Hospice, or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Vernon Dean, 89, went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 16, 2003. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette; three children, Patricia (Russel) Adams and Jack Dean, all of Traverse City, and Michael (Nancy) Dean of Grayling; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Vernon lived his entire life in Traverse City, graduating from Central High School in 1931. He started his career as a grocer at the age of 13, delivering groceries on his bicycle. In 1936, he opened his first grocery store in Mapleton on the peninsula. In 1941, he bought the grocery store on 11th and Maple (now the Salvation Army Store). After selling this store, he spent a few years working at Hamilton's Clothing Store. In 1956, he purchased East Side Beverage and renamed it Dean's Bantam Super. After retiring from the grocery business, Vernon and his wife spent their winters in Florida and summers at their Silver Lake home. Vernon and Jeanette were married in 1936 at Trinity Lutheran Church, where they have been members ever since. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, May 20, at 2 p.m., where friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until time of service. Pastor Robert Zagore will officiate. Family and friends will be served a luncheon at the church immediately following the service. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Williams, 90, of East Lansing, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at home. A longtime resident of the Grand Traverse area, she was formerly of Lakeland, Fla., Gladwin and Manton. While in Gladwin, she worked for the Gladwin Historical Society. In Manton, Leona and her husband owned Williams Pure Food Market. She also worked as receptionist for her husband at the Farm Bureau Insurance Agency in Gladwin. Born April 14, 1913, in Grant Township, she was the daughter of Clare and Lena (Patrick) Ramsay. On Jan. 21, 1934, in Buckley, she married Chester "Chet" Williams, who preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1991. Surviving are two sons, Roger (Gay) Williams of Atlanta, Ga., and Vance (Kay) Williams of Lansing; a sister, Floris (Bob) Davis of Traverse City; brother-in-law, Larry Williams of Sun City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Leona was also preceded in death by a sister, Maurine Ramsay; and brother, Morris Ramsay. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. TRAVERSE CITY - William Lewis Corteggiano, 90, of Traverse City, formerly of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Baltimore, Md., died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Born Dec. 13, 1912, in Kansas City, Mo., he was the son of Joseph and Lucia (DeVincentis) Corteggiano. In August 1937, in Baltimore, Md., he married Hilda Roberts Jones, who preceded him in death in 1997. He had retired from Westinghouse as an electrical engineer. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Surviving are a daughter, Josette (Jack) Costolo of Norwood; a son, Warren (Sue) Corteggiano of Traverse City; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Traverse City. The Rev. Gerald Micketti will serve as celebrant. Friends may call this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
