Obituaries

TRAVERSE CITY - Ewart "Bruce" Andrews, 81, of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Aug. 26, 1922, in Montrose, he was the son of Fred A. and Daisy (Dodd) Andrews. On Feb. 1, 1944, in Highland Park, he married the former Frances "Jean" Menear, who survives.
      Mr. Andrews served his country honorably with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He later was employed as a vice president of operations for the Dayton Hudson Corporation.
      Bruce was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis Golden Key Club, and volunteered at Grand Traverse Pavilions, Junior Achievement and at Munson Community Health Center.
      Along with his wife, Jean, he is also survived by his daughter, Carolyn J. DePappa of Gaylord; daughter-in-law Amy Jo Andrews of Highland; four grandchildren, Dominic, Derrick, Laura, Robert; and six great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Andrews on Aug. 9, 2000; and three sisters, Muriel Clark, Gwendolyn Bentley and Phyllis Harvey.
      Cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Presbyterian Church, Grand Traverse Pavilions, or Interlochen Center for the Arts.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Jeanette V. (Howe) Chilson passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003.
      During World War II, Jeanette worked at the Willow Run Defense Plant and was proud to be a member of the "greatest generation." After Jeanette and Don married, they returned to Traverse City, their hometown, to begin their family. She devoted her life here to her family's happiness and well-being.
      At this time, Jeanette's family would like to thank everyone at the Grand Traverse Pavilions for their outstanding care. With a unique blend of professionalism and compassion, the staff eased Jeanette and her family through their difficult transitions.
      Jeanette is survived by her sister, Prudence Rokos-Gaines; daughters, Judith Creamer, Mary (Michael Brubaker), and Donna Parrish; grandchildren, Timothy Creamer, Angela (Troy) Engbers, and Margaret Parrish; great-grandsons, Evan and Jake; special nephew, F. Michael (Gerry) Rokos; and special nieces, Janet Ginger (Gaylord) McCafferty and Rose (Tex) Leatherman.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Chilson; parents, Frank and Rose (Steele) Howe; and a special nephew, Edward J. Rokos.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where Jeanette's family will greet relatives and friends from 11:30 until the time of the services. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jeanette's name to the Northwest Michigan Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
     
      WOODLAWN, Tenn. - A devoted husband and father who dearly loved his family, George D. Ling, 72, of Woodlawn, Tenn., went to be with his Lord Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003.
      Formerly of Traverse City and Lansing, Mr. Ling was born April 14, 1931, in Lansing.
      Mr. Ling retired from the Lansing Board of Water and Light after more than 30 years of service, and had also retired from Chocola Cleaning Material.
      He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters, Shari (Brian) Wellwood and Jennifer (Bill) Ling; stepchildren, Barbara (Eric) Pearce, Shannon Hambrecht, Michael (LuAnn) O'Rourke and Ted (Carolyn) O'Rourke; 10 grandchildren; brother, Roger (Eleanor) Ling; and additional loving family members.
      Mr. Ling was preceded in death by his first wife, Karen Barner; his parents, Edward and Fannie Ling; sister, Julia Moore; and brothers, Roland and Clarence Ling.
      Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at the First Baptist Church of Williamston, 3185 N. Williamston Rd., Williamston.
      In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to the family.
      The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel.
     
      GRAWN - Vernon Elmer "Pete" Maddasion, 75, of Grawn, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, after a sudden illness.
      He was born in Chicago July 1, 1928, the son of Victor and Lena (Bee) Maddasion. He married the former Ethel Marion Strang in Traverse City on Nov. 11, 1950.
      Raised in Traverse City, Pete later moved to Clinton, Iowa, where he lived for 25 years. He returned to Traverse City after retiring in 1989 as a truck driver and gas station manager.
      Pete enjoyed riding his golf cart around his neighborhood, visiting with friends, and frequent trips to the casino.
      He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ethel Marion Maddasion of Grawn; eight children, Kay Banse, Debbie (Marvin) Jensen, Vickie (John) Killean, Sheila (Wayne) Kranz, Patricia (Jeff) Remington, Vernon (Mary) Maddasion, Cindy (Steve) Paarmaan, and Bonnie Maddasion; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Neal (Pam) Maddasion.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Victor, Ruth, Bob, Violet and Jim.
      Friends may call Monday, Nov. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the funeral home, with Dr. Gary Hogue officiating. Cremation will follow.
     
      CASS CITY - Mildred I. "Midge" Thompson, 92, of Cass City, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe.
      Midge was born in Birmingham on June 4, 1911, to Oscar and Ethel (Hammontree) Boone. She married Frank Spoor in 1928. He died Feb. 27, 1973. She later married Bruce A. Thompson on June 22, 1933, in Bad Axe, and he preceded her in death April 9, 2001.
      Mildred was a lifelong member of the Cass City United Methodist Church. He belief in God was strong and constant. She was a loving wife and mother during her marriage to Bruce Thompson. She worked as a volunteer at Hills and Dales General Hospital and for Meals on Wheels. She had a great sense of humor up to the end. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.
      Midge is survived by her children, Nada (Ed) Doerr of Caseville, Winona (Al) Farrington of Bitely, Kay (Glen) Cohoon of Romulus and Sharon (Jim) Frantz of Kewadin; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Spoor of Lake Ann; stepchildren, Judy (Jim) Pryor of Adrian and Gregory Thompson of Cass City; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Onalee Goff of Farmington Hills.
      She was preceded in death by her son, Duane Spoor; Quentin Spoor, Orville Spoor, Harold Spoor, and Ethel Crumb.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Cass City United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. George Ward will officiate. Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, Traverse City.
      Memorials may be made to the Cass City United Methodist Church.
      Arrangements have been handled by the Krantz Funeral Home, Cass City.
