November 6, 2003ObituariesMADELINE MARY DECKER, 89, of Grayling, died Tues., Nov. 4, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, where visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling. Arrangements are being handled by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel. CHARLES SNYDER, 72, of Frankfort, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort. No services are planned. Cremation will take place. The Oak Grove Cremation Center is serving the family. TED VELDERMAN, 54, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at home. Arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. TRAVERSE CITY - Bonnie Haverkate, 74, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully at home in Traverse City surrounded by family and friends. Bonita L. Lyons was born Jan. 9, 1929, to Joseph M. and Alice (Coveyou) Lyons in Grand Rapids. She grew up in Iona, Michigan, where she married John Minelli in 1948. They had seven children and resided in Rogers City from 1956 to 1979. Bonnie operated Minelli's Restaurant in the late 60s and worked at The Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center at Black Lake for 10 years. She married Ken Haverkate on Jan. 30, 1980. Bonnie and Ken owned and operated the Arbor Motel in Pellston from 1983 to 1993. Upon their retirement they divided their time between Michigan and Florida. Bonnie is survived by her husband, Ken, seven children: Mary (Roy) Paitsel of Chester, Va., Nancy (Thomas) LaVeque of Cheboygan, John A. Minelli of Frankfort, Michelle (Thomas) Brege of Rogers City, Therese (Terry) Mason of Suttons Bay, Joanne (Thaddeus) Niedzwiecki of Traverse City, Lori (Gary) Florip of Lake Ann; four step-children: Karen Haverkate of Redmond, Wash., Kenneth (Shelly) Haverkate Jr. of Grandville, Kelly (Dr. Eric) Buth of Ada, and Kathy Haverkate also of Ada; her sister-in-law Alice Lyons of Iona and 30 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her parents and her brother Walter Lyons preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held on Nov. 22. The family asks that memorial donations be made to Munson Hospice of Traverse City, 550 Munson Ave., Traverse City, MI 49686. CADILLAC - Jane Mintzer passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, after a courageous struggle with cancer. She was 60 years old. Jane was born on Aug. 28, 1943, in Alexandria, Va., to Eustace John and Annabelle (Williams) Vogt. She married Barry R. Mintzer in August 1968 in Alexandria, Va. They just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Mintzer graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria and received her registered nursing degree from Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in various nursing positions in Virginia, New Jersey, Texas and Michigan. For the past 12 years, she was employed in the family accounts receivable management business in Cadillac. She was a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker, and friend to many people. Her hobbies and interests included antiquing, cooking and traveling. When her children were young, she was a member of the Girl Scout Council and the Child Study Group. She also participated in several Cadillac Area Public Schools parents' school committees and programs. Survivors include her husband, Barry; son Todd of Chicago; daughter Leslie of Chicago; mother Annabelle of Cadillac and Montclair, Va.; brothers Donald (Deborah) Vogt of Montclair, Va., and Robert (Sherry) Gallana of Longview, Texas; brother and sister-in-law Lance and Cyrille (Mintzer) Lazo of Boca Raton, Fla.; aunts Helen Grove and Alpha Williams of Lovettsville, Va.; several dear nieces, nephews and cousins; and many special and great friends. Jane was preceded in death by her father Eustace John Vogt. Visitation is from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, at Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Further visitation and services will be held at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria, Va., with burial at the Lovettsville Union Cemetery, Lovettsville, Va. Memorial contributions instead of flowers may be made to Congregation Beth El in Traverse City, Hospice of Michigan, or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. MAPLE CITY - Ethel Elnetta Whitten, mother and homemaker, passed away at Maple Valley Nursing Home, Maple City on Nov. 5, 2003. She was born on Jan. 27, 1915, the daughter of Phillip and Nellie (Westcott) Tobin. She was a lifelong resident of Maple City and graduated as valedictorian from Maple City High School in 1933. On Sept. 3, 1935, she married Merle D. Whitten. She is survived by four children; Tracey D. (Shirley) Whitten of Traverse City, Sandra L. Wilson of Maple City, Merle D. (Joan) Whitten of Jenison and Gary L. (Margaret) Whitten of Traverse City, 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews, two sisters, Nellie Drew of Grand Rapids and Margie Yanaros of Long Island, New York, two brothers, Phillip Tobin of Grand Rapids and Frank Tobin of Maple City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Constance Faye Youker and sister Jessie Wepking. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. from the Covell Funeral Homes, with visitation on Sunday, Nov. 9, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and on Monday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire. Memorials may be directed to the Maple Valley Nursing Home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes.
