Obituaries

      HOLLAND - Kenneth H. Leismer, 56, of Holland, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003. He was an architect.
      He was the son of Elizabeth Anne Bossi Leismer and Stephen Leismer.
      Ken was a 1965 graduate of Traverse City High School and a 1969 graduate of the University of Michigan School of Architecture.
      During his career Ken worked at Elzinga and Volkers in Holland, Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Ferris State University in Big Rapids, GBKB in Traverse City and as an independent architect in the Traverse City and Houghton areas.
      Along with his passion for designing and overseeing commercial and residential construction projects, Ken enjoyed sailing and choral music.
      Ken's sailboat Andante was a regular sight on East Traverse Bay.
      Ken sang with several church and community choirs, the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club, the Holland Chorale and the Michigan Tech Concert Choir.
      He is survived by brothers Bill and Carl, both of Holland.
      A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church of Traverse City at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.
     
      BELLAIRE - Phoebe R. Hollaway, 80, of Bellaire, died in the early morning on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
      The daughter of Chris and Loraine (Clapp) Apel, Phoebe was born June 15, 1923, in Detroit. On Sept. 30, 1944, in Detroit, she married Marvin C. Hollaway, who survives.
      After having summered in the Bellaire area since 1959, she and her husband moved to Bellaire permanently from Livonia in 1980.
      A very community-minded person, Phoebe volunteered at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility, and was past president of the Bellaire Literary Club, the United Methodist Women, Friends of the Library and the Bellaire Public Library Board. She enjoyed playing pinochle, bridge and bowling in the Wednesday Morning Senior Citizen League. She was a member of Bellaire United Methodist Church.
      Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her four children, Barbara Stone of Detroit, Gordon (Anne) Hollaway of Livonia, Laura (Jim) Walker of Oak Park and Nancy (Nicholas) Bianchi of Clinton Township; a sister, Joyce Easdon of Livonia; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Stephanie, Stacie, Nicole, Danielle, Tommy, Melissa and Elizabeth; and six nieces and nephews.
      Phoebe was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Ruth Normali.
      A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, at Bellaire Community United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mary Brown officiating.

      Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Home.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Dean Boone Bosman, 81, of Traverse City, went to his Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, surrounded by his family at home.
      Born Jan. 9, 1922, in Holland, he was the son of Adrian B. and Gertrude (Boone) Bosman.
      On Nov. 29, 1942, in Holland, he married the former Marjorie Ann Knapp, who preceded him in death on March 15, 1979.
      Dean resided most of his life and raised his family in Muskegon and St. John's.
      He had been employed as a plant manager for Sealed Power Corporation in St. John's and retired in 1982 after 39 years of service.
      Dean was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Traverse City and spent his winters in Palmetto, Fla.
      Dean was a loving father and enjoyed camping, boating and fishing with his family. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling with his companion, Marge.
      Survivors include his children, Tom (Sue) Bosman of Marshall, David (Karna) Bosman of Des Moines, Iowa, Aurea (John) Antaya of Traverse City, and Scott (Beverly) Bosman of Apex, N.C.; a brother, James (Barbara) Bosman; and a sister, Donna Eady, all of Holland; longtime companion, Marge Cowan of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren including nieces and nephews.
      Dean was also preceded in death by his parents.
      A memorial service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
      The Rev. Becky Chamberlain will be officiating.
      Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Holland at a later date.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Heart to Harp, a member of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, 250 E. Front Street, Suite 310, Traverse City, MI 49684.
      The Heart to Harp volunteers provide therapeutic music to people in the community who are experiencing health challenges. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Richard E. Calvert, 62, of Traverse City and formerly of Lapeer, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003.
      Mr. Calvert was a stockbroker. He also was a member of Traverse City St. Francis Catholic Church and belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Elks.
      He is survived by two brothers, Thomas B. (Ida) Calvert of Columbiaville and Michael V. (Stephanie) Calvert of Lapeer; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends from Lapeer and Traverse City.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Leola (Willson) Calvert; a brother, Robert Calvert; and a sister, Jo Ann Stone.
      Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 1021 S. Main (M-24) in Lapeer, (810) 664-8111, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Immaculate Conception Church in Lapeer, with Father Janusz Iwan officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Loretto Cemetery in Lapeer.
      Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Church, 814 Nepessing St., Lapeer, MI 48446; or St. Francis Catholic Church, 1025 S. Union St., Traverse City, MI 49684. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
     
      HELEN E. BECKWITH, 95, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      No services are planned. The family is being served by Covell Funeral Homes, Elk Rapids Chapel.
     
      THE REV. WILFRED H. "BILL" BERMAN, 67, of Traverse City, formerly of Whitehall and East Lansing, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Cremation has taken place and private family services will be held. Arrangements were by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      ROY E. MORSE, 88, of Traverse City passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the funeral home.
      A full obituary will appear in the next edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements are being handled by Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City.
