Obituaries

      TRAVERSE CITY - Dorothy J. (Wyatt) Bickle, died on Nov. 7, 2003, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
      She was born on Aug. 13, 1918, in Watseka, Ill., to Marshall "Ed" and Geneva (Henry) Wyatt. As a small child, she moved to the Traverse City area with her family. She attended the one-room Sleights school and then high school in Traverse City.
      Dorothy married Graden R. "Dutch" Bickle in 1936 and raised six children, as well as caring for numerous others in daycare and foster care.
      She is survived by brothers, Gerald (Fran) Wyatt of Traverse City and John "Jack" (Florence) Wyatt of Florida, and sister-in-law, Ruth Wyatt of Alaska. Also surviving are her six children, Sharon (Gale) Long of Casper, Wy., Doug (Carol) Bickle of Cedar Springs, Bonnie (Dick) Johnson of Grand Ledge, Gail Clous of Traverse City, Peggy (Mike) Pobuda of Empire, and Greg Bickle of Traverse City. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband "Dutch"; four brothers, James, Glenn, Lowell, and Donald; a grandson Douglas William "Billy" Bickle and a granddaughter, Angela Jean Martinek.
      Visitation will take place today, Nov. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. at Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

      Kenneth L. Bancroft
      Died November 8, 2003
      TRAVERSE CITY - Kenneth Leo Bancroft, 79, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003.
      Ken was born to Nellie Mae (Tripp) and Leo J. Bancroft on April 22, 1924, in Adrian. A veteran of World War II, Ken served with the U. S. Army 517th Air Service Group.
      Ken and his wife have been residents of Traverse City since moving here from Rockford in 1991. He had also made his home in Jonesville prior to living in Rockford. He and his wife enjoyed spending six months every year in Horseshoe Bend, Ark., during the winter months.
      A supervisor with Consumers Power Company, Ken drove school bus for Forest Hills Schools in Grand Rapids following his retirement from Consumers. He enjoyed doing cross-stitch, crossword puzzles, reading, golfing and bowling. In the winter months, he attended Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen.
      Ken is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn, whom he married June 13, 1988, in Grand Rapids; his children, Brenda (Bruce) Frarey, Steven Keith (Chris) Bancroft and Kathy (Mark) Delcamp, all of Hillsdale, Karen (Dave) Sage of New Haven, Mo.; stepchildren, Keith Steven Prong of Carson City, Mich., David Timothy (Linda) Prong of Grand Rapids and Nancy Isabelle (Bruce) Mercier of Traverse City. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his siblings, George E. (Nadine) Bancroft of Clinton and Thelma M. Bancroft of Toledo, Ohio.
      Ken was preceded in death by his first wife, Blanche (Miller) Bancroft, and by his parents.
      Visitation will take place today, Nov. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen, with visitation one hour prior to the services at the church. Pastor Timothy Mowry will officiate. Burial will follow later in the day at Courtland Township Cemetery near Rockford.
      Rather than flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in Ken's name be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church, The Hillsdale Police Department or Bethany Christian Services.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Marvin J. O'Brien, 74, of Traverse City, died Friday night, Nov. 7, 2003, at his home after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
      He was born Dec. 24, 1928, in Lake Leelanau to Earl and Hilda (Priest) O'Brien. He graduated from Lake Leelanau St. Mary's in 1946. On March 26, 1951, he married Arlene Overby of Lake Leelanau, his beloved wife of more than 52 years. They moved to Traverse City in the fall of 1953.
      Marvin worked 41 years at the Cone Drive/Textron plant in various positions, retiring as a supervisor in 1991. He was a long-time member of St. Francis parish, where he served as a church lector and a Eucharist minister for the sick.
      He was an avid golfer, who especially enjoyed golfing with his brothers. He was an outdoorsman, gardener and a fine craftsman, having rebuilt an aging house on Seventh Street into a lovely home in the Central neighborhood where he and Arlene raised their family. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Traverse City.
      Marvin is survived by his wife, Arlene; son, Leonard, and his sons Christopher, Timothy and Kyle; son, Robert (Laurie) and sons, Jason and Daniel; son, Ronald (Gus); son, Dale (Tracy) and their children, Neil, Kelsey and Alison; son, William (Laura) and their son, Christopher Both; and loving daughter, Jean (Don) Livingston. All reside in Traverse City.
      He is also survived by brothers, Louis (Kay) of Traverse City, Harold (Helen) of Empire, Patrick of Lake Leelanau, Glen (Gail) of Millington, Arthur (Judy) of Stanwood and Dennis (Jane) of Flushing; and sisters, Doris Peplinski of Vassar, Joan Korson of Lake Leelanau and Ann O'Brien of Phoenix, Ariz.; along with many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Alan, and infant son, Gregory; his parents; brothers, Bernard and James, and infant brother, Francis.
      Visitation will take place today, Nov. 10, at St. Francis Church from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m., with funeral services Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. at the church. The Rev. James Gardiner will officiate, assisted by the Rev. William Lipscomb. Interment will follow at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial donations may be directed to Munson Hospice or St. Francis Church.
      The Reynolds-Johnkoff Funeral Home is assisting the family.

      GAYLORD - Gordon Gray Everett, 84, died peacefully at his home in Gaylord Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, surrounded by his family, who loved him dearly.
      He was born in Southfield Twp. on April 13, 1919, to Clarence and Sarah (Gray) Everett. He and Marlene (Blake) Johnson were married in Gaylord on Dec. 16, 1960.
      Gordon graduated from Redford High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served in the Air Transport Command during World War II. He received an honorable discharge after contracting tuberculosis while serving in Germany. He spent the following year at the Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Gaylord, followed by a year at home in bed in Tawas City.
      Moving to Gaylord from Tawas City in 1960, Gordon started publishing The Northern Star Advertiser, followed by Weeklies Inc., Central Printing, A.P.S. and A.P.S. Mini Warehouse, and Mid-North Publishing (now owned by his son, Doug, and his wife, Sherry). He served as president and was an active member of the Shopping Guides of Michigan.
      Gordon was a member of the Gaylord Elks Lodge, a lifetime member of the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce and the D.A.V. He served as a former president and member of the Otsego Memorial Hospital board and the Otsego County Fair board. He was instrumental in helping establish the Otsego County Museum by donating his former store building on Main Street. He loved Gaylord and was proud of the Alpine theme, which he spearheaded in the early 1960s.
      After retirement, Gordon and his wife, Marlene, traveled by boat and motor home. Sailing was his real love and he spent many summers sailing in North Channel, as well as two years on the island of Mallorca, Spain. He was commodore of the Hidden Harbour Boat Club in Stuart, Fla., and was a charter member of the Tawas Bay Yacht Club.
      Gordon was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Port Salerno, Fla., where he and Marlene have spent their last 18 winters. They were 4-H leaders for many years.
      He is survived by his wife, Marlene Everett; two sons, Gary Everett and Douglas (Sherry) Johnson; a daughter, Janice (Johnson) Werbish (Al); nine wonderful grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and daughter, Cynthia Adams.
      Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Otsego Club Resort in Gaylord. The Rev. Mary McClure will officiate. Family and friends may begin gathering at the resort at 10 a.m.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Otsego County Historical Museum, Otsego County Fair Board, or to Hospice of Michigan, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

      JAMES McINTOSH, 82, of Central Lake, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at his home.
      Visitation will take place Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes
      Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Southern Cemetery, Central Lake.
      SYLVIA A. SANCRANT PATTERSON, 56, of Frederick, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, in Marion.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, with visitation from 11 a.m. until time of services. Interment will follow in Star Twp. Cemetery in Alba.
      WILMA WALKER, 95, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Service arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      FORD BEECHER WATERMAN, 80, of Brown Township, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee.
      The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, where memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, with Pastor Donald Stroup officiating.

      ONEKAMA - Blanche Ellen Miller, 68, of Onekama, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at her home.
      She was born January 23, 1935, in Detroit, the daughter of James and Blanche (Bolanger) Finney.
      Blanche graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor of science in nursing. In addition to nursing, Blanche was the owner and operator of "The Wildflower" in Onekama for almost 20 years.
      Blanche was very active in the community, serving as a trustee on the Onekama Township Board for many years, and she had also been instrumental in the development of North Point Park.
      Blanche enjoyed framing, quilting and spending time with her friends. She also loved basket-weaving, and would teach lessons whenever possible. Blanche was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Onekama, and the Portage Lake Association.
      Blanche is survived by seven children, Mark Miller of Williamsburg, Tom Miller of St. Louis, Mo., Steve (Connie) Miller of Lakeview, Jeanne Miller of Onekama, Dale Miller of Traverse City, Nancy (Jim) Russell of Brainerd, Minn., and Nathan (Katie) Miller of Windsor, Conn.; 11 grandchildren; her sister, Rita Marie Vargo of Ann Arbor; two brothers, Pat (Eileen) Finney of Osteen, Fla., and Gerry (Brenda) Finney of Onekama; her sister-in-law, Carol Finney of Grand Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Blanche was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Kate Bicks; and a brother, James Finney.
      The family will receive friends this evening, Nov. 10, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
      Memorial Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Onekama, with Father Michael Conner officiating.
